Hook in the mouth on a minnow with a jig all day! It gives the motion and impression of a swimming minnow. In the tall makes the minnow look like it's being pulled away backwards!! In the tail below a slip bobber so the minnow can freely swim. Ok so that's how my dad thought me as a youngin! Lol

I've always hooked my minnows through the lips, coming up from the bottom lip, and out the top. You're right that they rip off easier, but it lets them swim freely. I respect your opinion though, you know a lot more about fishing than I do! You have some of the best fishing content on KZfaq. Thanks.

I do the same, for me they seem to last much longer, but I most often fish them on aberdeens so the free swim is a big part. Jigs seem to drag them around so much that the free swim seems like a moot point but I'm sure it helps to have them kick when it's still in the water column.

The way Sam does it is the best way to keep the minnow lively and on a jig. Through the eyes works just fine though they die sometimes. I never hook them in the tail! Sometimes during ice fishing for crappie I'll hook it near the fin, but still never in the tail!

I fished LOTW for the first time this spring. Used frozen shiners and river hooked em on a jig. Caught my PB 29.5” walleye! It’s a preferred method on a local lake I fish often and it sure keeps the minnows on!

I hook minnows directly on top the back, above the dorsal fin. But that’s only for stationary fishing with a lindy rig. Otherwise for jigging I hook in the mouth.

I personally tail it on my dead stick while ice fishing because the minnow remains more active like you said but I’ll hook it in the mouth while hitting open water to avoid missing bites and losing minnows. If you can’t hook up before it dies, you should probably switch spots..
@garlicrebel5001

Live minnows can be the lethal in the rite situation when the body of water allows it. Ive tried hooking the mouth they don't last as long as its more difficult for them to breath however more hook ups on lite bite with a larger minnow. Tail provides more natural action however fish eat fish head first, therefore imo Dorsal hooking takes the cake you gotta split the difference, a legend taught me this and I have to agree. One other consideration is species of minnow you gotta match the hatch folks. Cheers you guys are the bomb thanks for the videos!

I like hooking minnows through the back above the spine just past the dorsal fin. Tail hooking is good but I find the fish take the head first and whenever i get finicky bites i often hook them through the mouth and get a way better hookup %.

Sam's minnow is best. We cant use live minnows in my area, but that's the only way to rig a minnow. I'd actually be real curious what the difference would be with live vs. dead minnows.

I'll hook a minnow however the fish seem to be most interested in it...all of them seem to work about the same but I'll have days where I swear one method works better than another. 1) standard tail hook 2) mouth hook - I go in the fish's mouth then up and out through the front of the top skull (seems to hold it on pretty well) or else similar to how Sam does it (out the gill) 3) backwards through the back....I insert the hook just behind the dorsal fin, slide it along the fish's back, then come out just in front so the hook runs along (just above) the fish's spine and the fish is facing backwards from the jig. That lets the fish take the minnow head first.
