Abandoned Signal Hill Mall - Statesville, NC. Well, the sad day finally came earlier this year when this dead mall finally closed its doors for good. There was no announcement or big event. It just closed unexpectedly to the surprise of those stopping to visit. People stopped by to find notes on the doors that the mall had closed permanently. Since then, the interior of the mall has been getting torn down. It's just a matter of time until the building is completely erased from existence.

I remember growing up in the early 2000’s when malls were still so full of life. Groups of friends meeting up for lunch, people buying gifts for loved ones, a couple going on their first date, live entertainment, community events, etc. That energy never goes away and I think that’s why we get attached to places like these. Every time I see a dead mall like this, I always think of who walked through those doors and what experiences they had here. Hearing the silence these places hold now is haunting and eerie. Amazing work, once again, Wallie! Thank you for these videos!

This mall staying open in the last few years was insanity! The mold was sooooo bad, my nose and skin would start itching after getting past the IHOP. The maintenance guy, Wilson, was always friendly. I have no idea how he wasn’t sick from being in there everyday. 😢

Holy crap. I explored this mall 6 times over the course of October 2022 to December 2023. Given it closed in January, I never knew they'd get to work on gutting it that quickly. In my photos I took with each visit you can WATCH the mall get worse. This place really was an experience as a dead maller. Prior to my first visit, I had never been in an abandoned building let alone a mall as empty and disgusting, it was jarring. But of course upon returning I took in its vintage and beauty, dived deep into research. This place changed my life in terms of diving deep into the history and lore of malls. Rest easy Signal Hill Mall, truly a one of a kind experience.

Poor ownership is usually what kills malls, but the fact that the company that built Signal Hill, leased it and took care of it just to later let it sit and decay is quite tragic.

Thank you so much for doing a video on Signal Hill mall. This mall was a big part of my childhood. It was a wonderful mall. I took my son here while he was growing up and I worked at Sears for many years. When I heard it was closed down it broke my heart. I cried. This place means a lot to me. I’m very sentimental about it. My dad loved this place and it’s like he passed away again when I heard the mall had closed. It’s a death of something. I was too afraid to go back and see the mall one last time. It hurts too much. I’m so thankful you made this video. It’s like you made it for me. Mr. Collier owns the mall. His last name was on the signs in the old WinnDixie. If I can get ahold of an old mall directory I will let you know. Thank you again. I appreciate you more than you will ever know.

First off, this mall has been in rough shape for a very long time and should of closed years before it actually did. The one unique thing about this mall is it never had any major renovations or updates in its entire history so when you could walk inside you felt like you were going through a time warp, lol. I would say that it started going down hill in mid 00's. I remember shopping in this mall in the 90's and it had the following stores: Chic-fil-a, Blockbuster Music, Radio Shack, FootAction, Kaybee Toys, Bookland, Wooton Jewlers, Payless Shoes, Pet Pros, and I remember a sports card shop. The Sears building opened as a Woolworth, then Hills Dept. Store before Sears. There were a few other stores as well that I cannot remember.

I completely understand how seeing a place that was so full of life slowly decay and rot can make one emotional. I once got very emotional watching a video of a walkthrough through a closed abandoned mall. I recalled the sounds of life inside of a mall that was no longer there and I nearly broke down. Thing is, I had never set foot in that particular mall, but I recalled the time period that the mall was opened and my own memories of being at the mall in my hometown. I was deeply struck by a wave of nostalgia and actual grief over the loss of life in that place. It took me completely by surprise. It's amazing how attached we can get to things like that.

I feel the same way about the Staunton Mall, I went there a lot when lived there for three months and even got my haircut in there. Then I went there about 2 years ago and saw they had gutted the place and tore it down and I was in complete shock that they just gutted it all. I liked going in there are shopping and looking around and I got clothes there and books there. It had a lot of fun memories for me in that mall. It hurts to see in that state. They are building something in its place, but it won't be like what the old mall was.

The Belk reminds me of a situation in High Point. Oak Hollow Mall was opened in the mid 90's and thrived for a short while. High Point University bought it out and eventually all tenants left except Dillards. They own their building and continue to thrive despite the Mall being a ghost and now being used by the college.

The mall in my town (Randolph Mall, now Asheboro Mall) seemed to be destined for the same fate but a company bought it and has pumped life back into it. Still a lot of open spaces but they have added walls and decor to spruce it up and hide them. The big anchors of yesteryear are almost all gone. (Sears, Roses, JC Penney, Belk) Belk is the only one still standing but now there is a Ross/Ulta there in the old Penney Spot, a Dunham Sports in the Roses spot and the Sears spot was demolished due to many issues. This mall also in the early 90's had an Eckerd in it which is now Books-A-Million. I've never seen another mall with a pharmacy, it was strange but neat. 2 small strip smalls are in the mall property as well. One other oddity is there is no food court. A Chick-Fil-A, hibachi type place and a pizza place are inside, but not together.

I remember this mall as a kid in the mid 70's until I left in '84. For a small town it was a decent mall. They added the wing with JCP and Spainhours (later Peebles) around 1980. The mall owners name is shown quite prominently in the Winn Dixie section of the video, and it's a damned shame they've let the mall decay to this point without taking the next step and knocking it over. Small town politics....

As for those trailers with the carnival, a number of them are motor homes for the carnival employees, as they stay in them when they travel around the country. Did you go to the carnival while you were there? The carnival looked like there were rides that would be fun to ride.

You should go to Gorgeous State Park. Locals call it Turtle Back. It’s on the SC NC line. 3 massive water falls n 1 is the biggest in the state 100 footer. But we call it turtle back because one waterfall is shaped like a giant turtles back and you climb a bull rope to get on top of the waterfall and then slide into a giant lagoon. Be careful not to get sucked downstream because that hundred foot waterfall is no more than 100 yards away. I lived in Franklin North Carolina for 20 years and this is my favorite place other than going to Highlands, North Carolina from Franklin. What a beautiful trip and lots of waterfalls and some you have to know about to even find.

Then off to KB toys ( once a month ) it was a treat to pick out a transformer then finishing off with Aladdin’s castle arcade and watching live action TNMT and Flinstones and the like at the movies… Cherished memories ❤ For those of you who grew up 2000s and onwards there is a special kind of magic a mall can bring that Amazon and the like can’t emulate.
