In our series about playing over single chords we will take a look at the m7b5 chord or half diminished chord.
By listening to the backing track we can extract the notes of the m7b5 chord: the root, minor third, flat five and minor seventh.
Over this chord typically players will use a Locrian mode, but in this case as we don't have the second in the backing track we can choose between the minor and major second.

Nice David! It's great to hear you say things like, 'listen to the whole thing tentatively at first' and that 'it's ok to play that major 2nd instead of the minor 2nd'. It's hard to deal with that min7b5 as a tonic or as a I chord...in this case, I strongly feel that that Am7b5 is just an inversion or a voicing of a stronger harmonic sense, which is Cm6....it contains the exact same notes, just arranged in a different fashion - C Eb G A....That melodic minor scale you propose would be my favourite choice. In many, many cases it's important to dig a bit deeper, because you can invert the chord and find stuff happening in front of your eyes....like that Cm6....which can also be a F9 without the F, if you thing about it....and so on. All the best!
