The Delta Center was a buzz with talk of the Lauri Markkanen trade talks.
David Locke, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and Jazz NBA Insider breaks down the summer league game last night and the key match-ups.
Locke looks at the play of Utah Jazz rookies Isaiah Collier and Cody Williams as well as 2nd year players Bryce Sensabaugh and Taylor Hendricks. Keyonte George was the best player on the floor last night with 30 points and 19 trips to the free throw line.

I red in finnish media that Lauri had been texting messages to the rookies and welcomed them. He said that it's important to get bonding with them early.

He played great last night outplaying Kessler mostly on the basis of effort and desire. His best moment was when after tweaking an ankle, Edey refused to go back to the locker room, and instead, laced up his sneakers extra tight and returned to the game: the kid's got the right stuff!

I actually thought Keyonte George played selfish hero ball, rushed his offense, and played outside the team system, for me it wasn't fun to watch and I am sure it wasn't fun to play with... I thought the rookies Cody Williams and Isaiah Collier looked and played well. You can see the potential in Cody and Isiaiah is a stud who got the team going and is a great passer.

Really like the Elam ending for OT. For regulation, I am still not sold on using it every game.

It's an interesting thought. You would be eliminating the potential for double, triple, quadruple overtime games. A lot of those eye popping statistical games players have are during multiple overtime games when they have more time to rack up stats. Here you'd be capping the points a player could earn in OT, eliminating anything beyond a single OT, and reducing those other stats as well. I'm not sure that matters, especially in today's game when we're getting 70+ point games on a fairly regular basis just in regulation. Just pointing it out.

Walker looked stronger than last year, but Edey is already better, more dominant, with better offense, was best player on the court. Imagine if we didn’t bring Walker last night, who would have guarded Edey. He would have scored 30.

Elam ending was fantastic. Really upped the level of play instead of having teams play for 1.5-2 minutes trying to get up and then just playing super defensive and running out the clock trying to just hold the lead or otherwise playing the foul game for the last minute. Would really like of NBA considered changing their overtime rules to this

Watching Edey last night reminded me a lot of Yao Ming. If he played in that era he would be a superstar. I think in today's game he will be a great NBA player and could end up being a more offensively skilled Rudy Gobert.

He doesn't move as well as Rudy so I don't think he'll ever match him defensively, but I agree he'll end being better offensively so maybe it becomes a wash as to his impact in the NBA.

Agree and Laurie is a super star. What I'm trying to say is Danny Angie instead of trading him get another super star to help Laurie out. Danny said that was the plan when they traded for him. If we sent Lauri back to the Cleveland with Mitchell they would easily be a championship caliber team. If he went to Golden State to play with Steph they would be a champion caliber team. That's how good he is. Plus he still so young. The only way for us to get a amazing rookie is to tank a season then it takes 3to4 years to develop someone. I think we got great young rookies this year and 2nd year players. But Laurie needs help nobody can win or be as great as to there potential with out help. That's all he needs is 1 or 2 good players maybe just one all-star player. And we got to get someone that can pass and dribble we be a true point guard someone that can create. Lauri is a super player. Danny needs to do as he promise and bring in a super star to help the big finisher. But he had not done so.

Frankly, his weight is the problem. I don't think he's capable of playing a lot of minutes without getting tired because he's carrying around too much weight on him.
@dallinpenrod1506
@dallinpenrod1506 25 күн бұрын
@@imnotmike People may point to his weight being the issue but I think the public has bias to players that appear overweight. You look at the games where he's given actual minutes he seems to produce without issue of stamina, both in the G-league and NBA, so I don't think getting tired is a real problem. Zion Williamson is 10 lbs heavier and the same height and we see him produce when healthy and on the court. We finally saw him healthy for the majority of the season where he didn't have any issues with stamina, however we point to his weight being an issue when it comes to his injuries but it doesn't warrant zion from not getting play time and weight shouldn't warrant Kenny from getting playing time if he has the skill.

Collier and Sensibaugh are the 2 i was most curious about this summer league. Collier is legit, Mitchell and Keyonte are scorers, what Collier is doing right for a true PG is just as impressive as their summer leagues to me. Got it right about Hendrix, kids good, let him be his role, Jonathon Isaac type mold and really valuable. Kessler actually did alright, instead of more pounds i was hoping he would have worked on mobility and a 1 dribble mid range shot. Doesnt seem to be any new tools yet like you see with 3rd year guys.

Re: Walker's 2 D RBs (and 5 blocks). It looks like he may have been focusing on blocks where the follow-through on missed blocks often takes a player out of good D RB position. How many blocks did he attempt? Challenging to sort out the value of this statistic as even missed blocks can impact the shooter's accuracy.
@imnotmike
@imnotmike 25 күн бұрын
Most of his blocks were at the end of the game and in OT. He got those blocks in very short order. He's never been a good rebounder for his size, though. It's definitely one of the things he needs to work on if he wants to make an impact.

I really like the Elam ending and definitely think the NBA should go to it at least for overtime. I can see the argument for not ending regulation with it because fans still like the buzzer beater, but I think we'd adjust pretty quickly if it eventually went that route. The college game desperately needs it because much more so even than the NBA, the end of games become a slogfest of free-throw shooting. That's not entertaining for anyone.

That's not entirely true. It's misleading at the very least. The Cavs were competitive the year he was there. In fact, for most of the season ESPNs analytics had them as the favorite for the championship that year. They had some injuries and ended the year poorly, but they were still well over .500 that year. Furthermore, in both of the years he's been with the Jazz the team was very competitive for the first half of the year, with the management making trades at the trade deadline to intentionally make the team worse to tank for better draft picks. The full seasons may not have been competitive seasons, but that wasn't his fault. You can't be on a team where management is specifically trying to make the team worse and be held responsible for the team not being competitive. But he showed both seasons that he's capable of being the main guy on a competitive team, if you put a competitive team around him. Both seasons, the team massively overperformed expectations for the first half of the year. That should say something. Luari is top 2 in the NBA at his position. His scoring volume and efficiency are among the elite in the league, up their with Giannis and Kevin Durant. You'd be hard pressed to find players better than him. Don't write him off just because he didn't win a championship when the Jazz weren't trying to win a championship.

3rd year players play in summer league all the time. Jake LaRavia for Memphis is in his 3rd year. Kessler did fine in that game. He held his own against Edey. It's very normal for players to be worse in their 2nd year than in their 3rd. Let's see how he does in his 3rd year where players typically bounce back before you go writing him off.

I disagree kessler had more blocks actually saw 6 credited for 5 last night with most comming down the stretch when it mattered most eddy is bigger and taller than kessler still blocked him more and blocked him multiple times down stretch. Kessler is not a guy that can find his own shot his teammates need to find him and his teammates were not getting him the ball where he needs Thurl baily commented on this last night defensively.he played well down the stretch though and that's what we need most out of him
