I am so glad you highlighted this older game. I tracked down a reasonably priced copy and it's gone over well in our group for the couple plays we've had so far. amazing how such a tight design makes simple decisions seem so hard...!!

Getting a reasonably priced copy is a feat in and of itself! Glad you've enjoyed playing this, for now I have to play Anastasia's copy because I have not found a reasonably priced one :)

I feel bad at how much I was giggling at Anastasia's pain throughout this episode. And I _howled_ when she got so mad at you she called you Nick. But in all seriousness, that coin draw mechanic really does ruin the game for me, which is sad because I like a lot of the rest of it. I'm not a fan of the mechanic in Eclipse either, but I do think it at least works better there.

I haven't been avoiding it, just never been in a play group where people were interested in playing it and I was never compelled to buy it. It will happen for sure!

Wow Jon! This was a great video! Despite the few errors, between your great filming and having a guest to play against, made watching so much fun! I would love to watch you both or even a third player play this again! Maybe put out a survey to see how your patrons feel about that. Thank you both so much!

I almost never put out multiple videos for the same game. Unfortunately, it just isn't great for the algorithm and people are much less likely to watch a second video which makes spending the time on it not make much sense. I'm not saying it certainly won't happen, and if there was one to redo I think this would be high up on the list.

Eclipse is my favorite game of all time, so I've always been interested in giving this one a try due to shared designer.

Really glad to see you guys covering this older title. Definitely one of my favorites as well! .. With regards to the coin luck problem, what if a) you distribute the coins into 4 equal piles (with 4 personal bags) b) everyone only draws from their bag c) either you don't return spent coins into the bag, or you don't return the 0s .. a) & b) helps to mitigate the luck factor a little, since per the original rules one person having bad luck would translate to others having slightly better odds. More importantly, rule c) ensures that you're more likely to get the valuable coins if you draw enough, as opposed to just a general luck of the draw for all pulls (eg: in this playthough I think Anastasia had significantly worse luck despite drawing more than Jon).

FWIW I personally don't mind the draw luck of the coins, it gives the decision to move further on the rondel more bite if you get "lucky" with the coins. The only real variant I could see entertaining would be removing spent coins from the game, as opposed to putting them back into the bag.

@@JonGetsGames thanks for your response, and everyone is entitled to their opinion :) That said, I'm not fully convinced by your point - Sure having better coins does make moving on the rondel a harder decisions, but imo that's still only a choice for the "lucky ones". Theoretically speaking, a lucky player who only ever draw "2s" can still move past the rondel as often as he like, or decide it's his interest for VP to move slow... whereas an unlucky player who only ever draws "0s" have doesn't have the same luxury of choice. Thus making the decision uneven from the start.

Honestly, I think that would undercut one of the main decision points of the game where you have to spend coins to move around certain spots on the worker placement rondel. Anastasia did have some rotten luck with coins, but if we'd remembered you can spend them as 1 resource then the scores would have been significantly closer. I think there is a way, if played with all the correct rules, for Anastasia to win this playthrough despite the bad coin luck.

Is this the more easy version of Lignum? Have you played Lignum? Look really poor, but is immensivly thematic.

I sort of played Lignum, we stopped halfway through due to us not really getting it (also it was taught to me and I think we just weren't fully knowing the rules). I'd say from that pseudo-play that Walnut Grove is far easier to learn and play.
