Cedar floor joists and cedar subfloor are anchored atop the root cellar walls to create the base for our off-grid office. We also install our IBC tote water tanks before the joists are installed so we can have an abundance of potable water on demand.
Episode 139:
0:00 - Cleaning used IBC tote tanks
11:24 - Bulkheads for IBC totes
22:45 - Connecting two IBC totes
28:30 - Moving totes with a CTL
33:11 - Organizing sawmilled cedar
35:45 - Cedar floor joists and rim joists
43:12 - Straighten floor joists
49:19 - Diagonal board subfloor with cedar
58:03 - Future thoughts

If you're not connecting the tanks right away, be sure to plug the pipes to keep the mice out of them!

Great to see the dynamic duo working together again! Jon, I love that you plan everything so well. Add a board so you won't bang your head in the cellar. Using your brewer to clean the water totes. Can I make a small request? Kids grow so much during these years, can you give us a shot of the girls every once in awhile? Last time we saw one they had grown a foot. Love the bonus footage!

John, Before you remove the bracing battens under the joists, suggest you invest in blocking between the joists employing the battens as guide for alternate screwed in spacer blocks. Just as a 'belt and braces measure' that I've seen many other craftsmen employ on their structures. Just trying to be helpful as ever. Regards Robin....

That cedar!!😍 So exciting to see your office building coming along. Great work Jon! We took notes on how to clean out IBC totes, a towel - genius! - we got a connection in our neck of the woods for some & it's almost time for us to get them & get our water collection system started. Bryce finished our RV shelter last week. Hi Meg! It was good to see you.

If you remember, I used one to store some water when I was doing all the block work. At the time, I figured what's the harm if there's a little oil residue. Well, it made a mess of the interior of the container. My advice is to clean them immediately when you get them and don't use them until you do. They are by far the most economical way to store water. Good to hear from you!

I miss you Meg :) , Maybe "next" Time lay the tote on the side so you don't have to stretch as far. Bridging between the joists will help stiffen up the floors and help take out the bows.

All things considered, best wood for anything like this is cedar. Smell is terrific, moth proof, and only a rock will last longer as for any kind of rot issues. You are so correct... everyone needs a lady like Meg. Handy as a pocket on a shirt and plumb prettier than a speckled rooster.. maybe I should of said, movie starlets, best leave now .... "There's a new queen in this town"!! I've seen many carpenters use a screw or nail plus their hammer to move or take the twist out of a board... any better?? Who knows, you have something that works and never need apologize for that. Now if Meg had come with a endowment of John D. Rockefeller, troubles would be over for water.... they can afford to drill to china, then have tea water sent hot to the house/LOL

Didn't want the doorway that big just for that purpose. There are two, so if one fails, it will give us time to get different tanks that fit through the doorway. There are a lot to choose from. Figured I'd go with the most economical solution at this phase since we had easy access to just lower them in.

I have your cordless Nailer, I found that Grip-Rite nails bend about 3/4 inch from being driven into the wood, I'd have to hammer the nail head back straight the then finish with hammer( 3 inch ring shank & 2 inch ring Shank ) I used Paslode nails,,, Paslode 3-In X 0.12-In 30 Degree Hot-Dipped Galvanized Ring they do not bend like the Grip-Rite, Just sharing my experience with bending Grip-Rite nails, PS adjusting the depth gauge on the Nailer did nothing to help stop the nails from bending .

@@WalnutsandWineberries I think it's the glue he's referring to more than the attachment method. My son just built a house and the floors have a tendency to squeek because the contractor didn't glue the subfloor.

Not being a negative Nancy but you should use CPVC for potable water...

It's a good debate topic. Just to explain my thinking: I think PVC only leaches when it's exposed to higher temperatures. Not to mention, the water is straight from the well. No chlorine or any chemicals like in public water.
@Bob_Adkins
@Bob_Adkins 2 ай бұрын
@@WalnutsandWineberries Not to worry, PVC is more than good enough, and gets better with age. If in doubt, drink bottled water for a month then start using it for drinking and cooking. Outgassing is very low, but highest when brand new. There is almost no outgassing or leaching in a couple of months.

Guys, Jon has a lot on his plate. I think he will want to show us the finished (or almost) building. While the frame of the structure might seem to go up quickly, it is the all the fiddley bits that take the time. This is especially true now that he is primarily doing it on his own, since Meg has her job and the household to manage. Jon won't want to rush the finish just to throw content out there. It is not going to happen. The man has pride in his work. I wouldn't be surprised if the next video is up to a fortnight off.😄

That cedar sure looks good. Especially underneath. Back in the day, we would add subfloor just like this, add a layer of tar paper and then a second layer of subfloor running the opposite direction. The paper stopped dirt falling down into the basement. Then plywood became the product of choice. Cheap builders used OSB or particle board which failed when they got wet.
