In today's video Paul fro The Studio Rats is looking at Walrus Audio ACS1 V2.
This fantastic amp sim pedal has been completely updated and now has all you need to take to a gig and a recording session.
Walrus Audio have been working on a huge update to the ACS1 by creating all new amp models from the ground up, and re-defining the playability of the pedal.

When I got the ACS1 a year ago and reviewed it on the TPS Facebook group, I said it was woefully short on gain (and I’m not a high gain guy) to achieve anything approaching an authentic reproduction. I was flooded with responses that I must be doing something wrong (which is hard to imagine - plug the guitar in and turn the gain up, what else is there?) Glad to see I wasn’t the only one who experienced this. But still no presence control - that is absolutely essential for the Bluesbreaker tone. Without presence, it sounds like an overdrive pedal, not an amp. I know walrus are industry leaders but unless I’m missing something they flubbed this one badly.

This is the pedal to beat now for sure. I’ve got a Helix now and bought Tonefactor’s 66 Deluxe XR IR like they put in this pedal, and wow is it good. I’ve had all the tone matched IR’s on the ACS1 when I had it, and this new stuff is just next level

How does this compare to the ToneX which (AFAIK) has similar functionality, but a whole lot more amps?

To my ear it still sound’s synthetic and extremely squashed (which was my main issue before). At least in comparison to the Iridium or the other modeler pedals available now. I returned my ACS1 shortly after I bought it; I don’t think this is quite enough to get me back. Love the other Walrus pedals though.

Same. I love the idea of the acs1 but it just lacks so much bass and sounds plasticky and compressed…

I bought this pedal a few years ago and came to the same conclusions as you. Compression, lack of gain, and synthetic sounding. I pulled it off the board and it sat for years. I saw the update, pulled it out, and it’s a very different pedal indeed. There’s much more bass available than what you’re hearing here, and the compression and feel have been much improved. It’s still got that digital sheen to gain, but it takes pedals better and feels very different than before. Worth a look.

@@trahnettilhcs Agreed, people also need to remember that you're hearing KZfaq's compression when you watch these videos, it's not the exact sound you'd hear through a PR or monitoring out of an interface or something. And aside from the increased gain, imo the new IRs make a big difference in the way the 2.0 ACS1 feels to play, and it's impossible to fully capture this in a demo. Not saying it's "the best" or that it's the right pedal for everyone, just that the idea that it sound "synthetic" is a bit of a tough call to make based off a KZfaq video. It's an excellent-sounding pedal in person, and a great platform for a DI rig.

Probably a stacked single coil, you can’t get that much punch with just a single coil. Would guess a little bit of compressor, some mid eq.

Paul, forgive me if I missed it in your voiceover, but can you run two different signals in and then out as wet/dry, or is it just mono/stereo in and mono/stereo out? Enjoyed the video as ever. EDIT: I guess you can run one line out of the ACS as say, a Fender, straight to the FOH, then the other one as a Vox or whatever through modulation and delays/verbs then to FOH, which pretty much gives you wet/dry…

Hi Paul. Does the ACS1 now come closer to the deluxe reverb tone as for instance UA dream? Or am I comparing apples and oranges, so to speak. 😊 Great demo of the pedal. Cheers DD.

As far as I’m concerned, now the ACS1 does all 3 models really well at least as good as the UA equivalents. I know UA don’t have a Marshall but that’s why I’d go for one of these.

Paul I love your vids but could you try using a more recognisable sound other than the tele middle pickup 🙏 It's not a bad tone at all, but it's unusual and it's difficult to compare these tones with the ones we have in mind

Hi Martin. Thanks. To be honest I’m a little confused, you said “more recognisable” it’s a telecaster which is probably one of the most sold guitars throughout history. That is not an unusual tone. The middle position on a Tele is one of the most used clean tones recorded.

Instead of “unusual” or “more recognizable”, maybe he means use the bridge pickup a bit more, especially with gainier tones. I would love to hear that as I use the bridge the most, especially with gainier tones.

It's a little bit weird question, but does ACS1 useful for some heavy sound like (Marilyn Manson or Metallica) or better use Iridium for this kind of stuff?

I’d say they both have the same ish amount of gain, you’d need to use a drive pedal with both.

That’s a good question and to be honest I don’t know, send a message to Walrus tech support. You can load your own irs so there is no need to load irs into your external unit.

Ah! Firmware V2. The title is a little misleading. I thought this was a version 2 of the pedal. Like how the did the D1.

I just compared version 1.9 with 2.0 and the new version has MUCH LESS VOLUME than the previous version. If before the pedal suffered a little from low volume, now it is much less.

Why I'm i the only one that the new update v2 sounds muddy and dark with not clarity and even when I dial on the treble knob. I had to go back to the previous version because was sounding really bad.

If you look at his settings in the review, he has the treble dialed up a bit. I had to do the same thing after the update.

You're not the only one. I had the same issue, but I didn't go back to V1. I went back to using my Ampero II. It just sounds better. I think Walrus should have modeled a Plexi for the Marshall amp instead of a Bluesbreaker.

@@kitgaineswhat amps are you comparing with against the ampero II? I’m the opposite, thinking of ditching the ampero II for an acs1 and would love to hear your thoughts on the comparison
