I think the Walt’s worm is the epitome of necessity is the mother of all inventions. It was solely created for weight but it is now one of the most consistent flies ever tied.

I am really enjoying this recent series of flies drawn from the competition circuit. Very simple, slender, beautiful ties.

I've found it's easiest to use a bobbin to load up the lead free wire (a cheap one preferably) and take wraps with the bobbin. It makes it much easier to pack in the last wire wraps without any waste because the weight of the bobbin sort of stabilizes the wire.

Antron dubbing?

Just wanted to ask since I’m a new, fairly financially limited fly-tier, is the jighead absolutely necessary for this pattern? Can i use a normal nymph hook for this so as to save money by using what I have? Or will that change the orientation of the jighead or make the presentation undesirable to trout?
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 5 жыл бұрын
Regular hooks and beads are just fine. Or even skip the bead altogether and use wraps of lead free wire beneath the dubbing. Jig hooks, because they ride hook point up tend to get snagged on the bottom less often, but they are indeed more expensive, particularly when paired with a slotted tungsten bead.

I'm not saying there isn't an intrinsic imitative value of this pattern...but I've always wondered if the ace up the sleeve for this fly is that the tier hasn't made a big time investment and therefore as a fisher is more willing to put the fly in harms way at the bottom where the fish are.

Excellent point Adam and I think you are right on the money. Just like real estate, it's most often location, location, location- getting the fly to where the fish are. For me anyway, the jig style is what really sets the pattern apart because it's less prone to hang-ups.

Do you think this fly would be just as effective if killer bug yarn was used in place of dubbing?
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 8 жыл бұрын
+anthony0803 Sure, I use it all the time see: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rayYgN2TvKfFn2g.html On larger sizes I do like the dubbing because of the added spikey hairs sticking out that look like legs and suggest motion.
