Walter Koenig's Bad Day

From the press conference held for Star Trek V.
First, William Shatner forgets Walter Koenig's name, then he has to suffer through bad booze.
Now, having worked with Koenig on and off for 20 or so years (and even directing Star Trek V), it's unlikely that Shatner didn't know his name, and probably had a brain fart the way most of us do. It is funny, however, to play to the Mythos that Shatner is such a jerk that he didn't even know Walter Koenig's name.
And his expression after the drink was absolutley priceless.

I think Shatner was nervous. He rushed through the intros for each of the actors and of course was probably on tight schedule for reshoots. There seemed to be a lot of jealousy amongst the supporting players on the series, which seemed to have escalated during the movies. Shatner definitely had an ego, but I think he was truly nervous. Koenig was definitely annoyed and stated his name once Shatner handed him the mic.

I won't deny that Shatner has a galaxy-sized ego and that he didn't always get along with other cast members, but every stage, TV, or film performer knows what it's like to suddenly draw a blank when the spotlight is on you, even if it's something you know by heart, like a co-star's name. I seriously doubt Shatner didn't know Koenig's name. Shatner's ongoing feud with George Takei is legendary, and yet he introduced Takei first and had no problem remembering his name.

I think that feud was very one way. I think Takai was mad at shatner, and shatner had no idea why. An often excited event is the excelsior incident, where shatner threw the scene that would have given Takai a promotion. I've heard the audio of the scene, and shatner's performance sounds fine. Apparently it was the director's decision to remove the scene, and had nothing to do with shatner. George was mad at him for decades over something that wasn't even his fault.

I think were it not Shatner's history of behaving poorly towards his fellow cast members; who all have stated on more than one occasion how badly he behaved towards other cast members. Even Nimoy who he was closest to; spoke of how self centered Shatner's Ego is. I mean, even directors and writers have spoken about it in interviews, and Deforest Kelly who tended not to gosip spoke about it. Sadly, people that tend to be narcissistic like that, tend to end up alone and frustrated in old age because; they still can't accept they have issues.

Dude, if Bill was that way the ENTIRE caste was even worse. You do understand what jealousy is right, you do understand bkw absolutely petty and pathetic actors are and how important they think they are. Shatner is always doing something while nearly the rest of them were bitter "NO I SHOULD HAVE BEEN THIS AND THAT" while Bill is working. Making a career off of bitching about someone is how people like Jim Cornette still have a home, because they can't let go of something petty years ago. When you get older you may understand your list of friends gets smaller because those "friends" of yours weren't your friends at all. @@andycasting Yes I assure you I know much more about TV/Film production than you. As well as about Star Trek. You know your argument might make sense if they only worked on a show together for 2 years 20 years prior but you clearly are unaware that this video is from their FIFTH movie together (5 movies made from 1979 to 1989) with 2 more to come after that (in 91 and 94). And in between are endless press circuits and junkets that the main 7 cast attend usually together on each and every movie, not to count the conventions or public events (like the NASA christening of the Enterprise). These people were entwined in each others lives for better or worse up to and including the making of this 5th movie, a movie by the way that SHATNER DIRECTED. You're telling me a director can't remember the name of one of his lead actors, let alone one he has been working on and off with for (to that point) 22 years, someone he has appeared on lunch boxes with, if not for some overwhelming trouble with narcissism? You might want to get your timelines in order because you clearly don't know how much or how long these 2 worked together nor do you recognize the difference between footage shot in the 60's and the 80's.

@tarrker Cool, what style of Karate did you take. Here in Edmonton I studied Shintani Wado Kai Karate. I agree with you about being on the spot, sometimes when I had to go and teach the kids, when I was 18, I didn't even want to go because I felt obsolete in comparison to the Japanese masters who teach this at 80 & 90 years old.

Watch the youtube video "Walter Koenig on Shatner's Raw Nerve". Koenig discusses WITH SHATNER the issues he and some of the other cast members had with him, while also taking his share of the blame that he should have spoken up more

I worked with Shatner on a Discovery "Science of Star Trek" show and actually really liked him. He had a great sense of humor, was funny as a crutch and would talk to anyone. We actually had a lot of laughs. Yes, he was the belle of the ball, but he really has an irrepressible amount of energy, like a great Vaudeville performer, and that has to go somewhere. I suppose it could get annoying with too much familiarity, but that is true of almost anyone.

I'm seeing a lot of people in these comments giving Shatner a pass on forgetting Koenig's name. He *knows* he's going to be introducing each actor *by name* . A year...two years working with someone, you slip, you have a brain fart. Unfortunately, Koenig complains about this same problem happening when they were working on the original series. He talks about the fact Shatner never addressed him by name...so much so, Koenig was concerned he didn't know his name. They worked on the show for three years...numerous conventions...a Columbo movie, for crying out loud! For Shatner, this is not a good look at all. I was hoping it was a joke...but when Walter had to introduce himself, I realized it wasn't a joke. This isn't a "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" situation where you have to find two or three other actors and make the connections. For *23 YEARS* , these two men were part of this *franchise* working together from the beginning and Shatner can't even recall the man's name?! I don't care how much they did or didn't like each other...this is pathetic.
