During a Democratic primary debate in 1984, Gary Hart was criticized by some of his competitors for the nomination for not offering serious, substantive policy proposals.

Look how much fun they’re having, even as they debate ideology and serious questions. So different than presidential debates today.

I think the format back then, where they're just sitting on chairs near each other on a stage helped keep it more friendly. With the candidates standing far apart on podiums it's probably harder for them to relate to one another.

GingerGilligan I’m not saying Mondale was a genius. I’m just saying no one in 1984 thought it was plausible for anyone to intentionally fly a jet liner full of innocent people into a building. That’s where Chancellor was going with the question. But none of the candidates seemed to grasp it and he didn’t clarify what he meant.
@nictheperson67092 жыл бұрын
@@GingerGilligan The question he was asked was implied to be in reference to the Soviet Union, since the plane in question was described as coming from Czechoslovakia, which as the guy asking the question pointed out, was a communist country. This isn't a question about a hijacked plane, as 9/11 was, it's a question about "is this or is this not a plane deliberately launched to attack the United States by communist forces?" Beyond that though, Mondale probably did the smart thing by trying to deflect from the question. If he did answer it, he could easily have given a dumb response like Hart did. If the question is one that you can't give a good answer to, or that you could give a better answer to by answering a different question, then don't answer the question. That's just good politics.

I once got into an elevator back in 1988 in Washington DC to find Walter Mondale in there with a very large guy that I assumed to be his body guard. And back in 2005, I was walking around town in Jasper, Alberta and walked right by Senator Hart... so this is a cool video for me to see of the two of them together. 1st of all. Stupid question from the moderator. Even if it's just hypothetical. Czechoslovakia was occupied by Soviets and communist countries since the revolution in 1968. No one, from our country would attack the USA, even despite the fact, we got no support in 1968 to beat the real comunim and establish a democracy. Why would soviet union send heavy militarily to such a small satelite country and occupy it till 89? It was a message, the US and the western democratic countries missed the chance to influence the Central Europe after the ww2 and show what values really matter. Sad, but true.
