A leading expert in foreign policy, Walter Russell Mead believes his lack of a PhD-and interest in actually going places-has helped him avoid academic silos and institutional groupthink that’s rendered the field ineffective for decades. Mead’s latest book, which explores the American-Israeli relationship, is characteristically wide-ranging and multidisciplinary, resulting in
“less a history of U.S.-Israel policy than a sweeping and masterfully told history of U.S. foreign policy in general”, according to a New York Times review.
He joined Tyler to discuss how the decline of American religiosity has influenced US foreign policy, which American presidents best and least understood the Middle East, the shrewd reasons Stalin supported Israel, the Saudi secret to political stability, the fate of Pakistan, the most likely scenario for China moving on Taiwan, the gun pointed at the head of German business, the US’s “murderous fetishization of ideology over reality” in Sub-Saharan Africa, the inherent weakness in having a foreign policy establishment dominated by academics, what he learned from attending the Groton School, and much more.

Can someone help me identify the book that Walter refers to at minute 54:30. It seems something like The Wisemen by David Halbershtam but I can't really find it :|

Halberstam, as excellent a writer as he was, did not write a book entitled The Wise Men. WRM almost certainly meant The Wise Men by Walter Isaacson and Evan Thomas, two other superb writers.

46:46 Great observation! I wondered why the US and UK, since they knew about their plans, did nothing to prevent the invasion. I wonder, however, if that was a blunder or a strategy. I have seen people arguing it was a strategy.

So .. he is somewhat a Straussian. Curiously, a Marx Scholar in Brazil agrees with him about specialization and narrow disciplines - and I also agree. I'm just a cat, though.

Dear Mr Peterson, it makes perfect sense if you discount what is happening in South America, and most recently to Brazil. Bolsonaro was in the side of the free market. Not only that. Although he is a conservative and pro life, against drugs, and in favor of an effective police and Military, he’s also profoundly concerned about the Brazilian people. He’s the only líder during the pandemic who said it aloud: What about the guy selling cookies at the beaches. Anyway, he was right about lockdowns, about not needing to vaccinate if you already had the virus, etc. and he was running against one of the most corrupt regimes in the face of this planet. Lula and his robbed so much while all the time putting his Marxist friends in charge of all institutions. Biden had to know all this. Instead of leaning towards Bolsonaro he send a CIA 1 month before the election threatening him if he didn’t accept the results! All this government accompanied by the mídia fo, was to tell mostly slander against Bolsonaro while washing Lula or ignoring him completely, so people wouldn’t be so much against him. Lula gives Brazilian people money to all the left dictatorships from South America. His buddy Maduro had to refuse the invitation to go to his inauguration because of the danger of being captured by people interested in the money put on his head by the USA. After all that, how do you explain that? Biden is against US interests? Please explain that to me. Brazil is a huge country, feeds 1 billion people on this planet, has more than 200 million people. The election for who was paying attention was a fraud from before, during and after. The Supreme Court in Brazil are the dictators.

Not great, and not typical of a TC interview. These conversations are lot better when he challenges the guest...that did not happen enough here.
