Possibly to make sure they can book smaller venues until they can afford bigger ones.

European rings tend to be significantly smaller than the 20x20 the Americans use. You sometimes hear European wrestlers in WWE talk about what an adjustment it is. It definitely makes a more tense match, the smaller the ring. Could also be that most European wrestling happens in ballrooms- over here in America, in a stadium, you kind of want the biggest ring you can get away with, I think.
