Last comment. In my experience, if you are not a summer, pastels make you pale. If you are not an autumn, browns make you look sick and yellow. If you are not a winter, stark white or black will emphasize dark circles and you'll look terrible. If you're not a spring, bright, warm colors, like primary colors, will make you look red (all zits stand out).

Well summarized. Also, instead of using black and white for winter, testing it with icy colours like icy lilac will emphasize the result better. Because cool summer can also wear black and white. But icy colours would still be tricky and harsh for them.

Good summary! I am one of the rare deep autumns with blue eyes and neutral to peach undertones. I look terrible in ANY pastels unless they are warm and I have a dark tan. The only winter color I wear okay is black because it is full saturation. I can wear a navy if it is more a warm indigo. White and even ivory or light warm oatmeal makes me look blah. I have to have a deep rich color or it’s just not right.

this is wrong. im a winter and intense colors emphasize my dark circles, because they give me color. and since they give color to my WHOLE face, it includes dark circles. that's why when i was at home i tended to wear grays. but when i conceal my dark circles, so i wont see them, i look best in intense, cold, darker colors.

Our Mom treated my sister and me to a Color Me Beautiful analysis 40 years ago and I’ve always found it very valuable. It was tricky for the analyst because I’m so close to neutral, but when she put aqua, a pale, muted turquoise, on me, it was obvious to all that I am a Summer. They didn’t have the subcategories then, but I later determined I am a Soft Summer, from doing a bit of study. I did eventually drop two of the recommended hues, purples and grays, they seemed to wash me out and were difficult to style. Still, the analysis has guided my wardrobe selection brilliantly for 40 years, it was very worthwhile.

My mom had a Come Alive with Color home party at our home in the 80’s when I was a teenager. (I live in Canada and that was the name of the company that did our color swatches.) At this party I was given fabric swatches that are grouped by color in a nice little booklet. I agree with you that this is such a beneficial tool that I can rely upon when purchasing clothes with the colors that look good on me. I too am a summer!

Years and years ago I had a professional analysis, and I have found I am happier in my colors. I actually looked up my consultant during covid. I found that she now works at a luxury resort setting where her husband is the historian. I found an article about them meeting. He spoke about noticing her immediately in her green dress. She had certainly used color to her best advantage. It was a great read, and i was glad I found the article that was a testament to the advantage of having your analysis completed.

I’m a spring…red hair, blue-green eyes, pale skin. The spring palette has always looked best on me. The startling thing is when my hair turned blonde after 50. Needed some tweaks with makeup, but my best colors were still my best colors. There are many channels that discuss “chic” and they always advocate black, white, grey, cream, camel, and navy as universally chic. But not everybody looks good in those colors. It’s nice to be the age where I’m comfortable doing me, rather than following a fashion.

Agree. If anything, colour analysis actually teach us that everyone has their chance to look the best and pretty regardless of skin colours and styling skills. That we don't need to be an influencer to still look elegant and stylish. That we don't need to follow the trends and others. That we don't need to spend money all the time buying new things. It's a timeless investment and it helps us to feel the best in our own skin. To acknowledge our natural beauty. A lot says that it's restricting, and it's true. But it's what I want. To restrict myself and save up my money from unnecessary purchases all the time.

I am an autumn but more specifically a blue autumn leaf. I got an in person color analysis with House of Colour in 2021. I love that I can ignore most clothing when I shop because of color alone. It makes shopping so much easier. I know technically it only matters what you wear close to your face, but it's better to buy everything in the same color family so that your entire wardrobe is harmonious and therefore interchangeable. Another gamechanger was my realization at 42 that pink makeup looks terrible on me. I thought I didn't like makeup, but now that I wear orange lipstick and bronze blush, I love makeup.

It's true that shopping is much more easier now. I love pastels and had to say goodbye to them and transition to crayon colours instead (I don't like winter colours before). But I found my own light colour choices in winter which is the icy colours and had been wearing them a lot nowadays. I love icy lilac the most. And also finally bought a new lipstick shade which is cherry red. Had fun playing colours in the store nowadays and couldn't be more shocked to realize that I can wear purple eyeshadow 😂. But didn't buy it yet. We'll see.

It sounds like your primary color characteristic is dark, making you either a primary winter or primary autumn. In this case, you would actually have a Secondary Palette of one of them. This does mean that all the colors for your Secondary Color Palette are good for you. They are very specific to the Winter Palette. Most people do not like the Autumn palette because they don't like the muted earthy tones. In the Autumn palette, there are muted colors and bright colors as well. You would want to wear the Bright colors of the Autumn palette. Like purple, teal, pumpkin, and reds, and avoid the muted tones, camel, khaki, and beige. Hope this makes sense. I am curious; however, what color are your hair and your eyes.

I’d be happy to hear you mention your season in your vids, when you present outfits, to make evaluations easier for your viewers. I hate when summer-type online influencers fill their closets with so-called “neutrals” like camel, beige, black and true white, while there are tons of other options that would need half the amount of artificial tanning, concealers and blushes. (Just ranting here because I can.)

I know. Some of the "natural makeup colors" and clothes just necessitate putting on way too much makeup etc. to make up for the fact, that it doesn't look natural on very many people. I really think that current makeup, such as, black eyelashes glued on,with mud toned lips suits very few seasons (maybe springs? Dark autumns?) and looks less clean and simple than even eighty's makeup.

I had my colors done in my hometown of Panama City nearly 40 years ago. (Color Me Beautiful.) I’m a winter, but it didn’t have anymore descriptors. Our analyst would use full scarves of each color in our family and you could really see what made you pop! I got “permission” to stop wearing beiges and oranges, which I never really liked anyway. We got a little plastic card carrier with each color and either one to three checks. (I need to dig that up!) it made a huge difference for my sister who dressed like our Mom, an Autumn. When our stylist dropped her in Winter colors, it was shocking how much better she looked. She said you could wear what you wanted, but you’d look your best in your best colors. For example, I love periwinkle, an Autumn color and it looks fine on me. I’d look better in royal purple, but you can’t always find the shade each season. Over the years, it can be frustrating when the popular colors are not your colors! Thanks for nothing Pantone. Sigh. Luckily, I look great in black, which is always in! As others have noted, if you want to wear something, like khaki which is awful on me, I can pull it off if I restrict it to pants or skirts. Same with muted or dusty colors. I mean I can’t wear black everyday! (Or can I?). I hope you find your color journey fulfilling.

That’s why I love silk neck scarves, they allow me to wear the wrong colors for me by introducing some of the right colors near my face, especially white. Dark and bright colors are both pretty bad next to my pale, Soft Summer, skin, especially black. But a black-on-white scarf, and extra cheek and lip color, make black wearable. It’s hard to have a good, classic wardrobe without any black at all, but I try to keep it to a minimum. Navy is “my black”.

I’m a soft autumn (so muted and warm), I love my soft colours but I have some black in my wardrobe that I really enjoy. I’ve found the trick for myself to be wearing black items - when close to my face - that are soft in other ways: lace necklines, ribbed fabrics, etc. Also not all black are the same, so i look for blacks that have warm tones when reflected in the light (yellow rather than blue). A bonus is that my clothes usually look better on me as they age, because the more washed out they become the more suited they are to my skin!

If the color is good for me, it's easy for my eyes to see my face. If the color is wrong for me, my eyes "want" to look at the clothing and not my face ( it's almost like i have to force my eyes to look at my face). Takes a little practice, but you'll see what I mean.

If you want to keep using the soft yellow top pair it with really bright high intensity color earrings, or very shiny pieces or a bright color neckacle, like a bib necklace, that should do the trick. Also if your skin is more towards the neutral maybe you can benefit from a flow pallette (16 seasons system) and maybe you are more like a bright wich is the fow between bright winter and bright spring and that opens up your pallette a lot more.

My background is art and design, and I taught Interior Design. I was a true ash blonde with deep green eyes and gray rims. I am a soft winter that looks horrible in caramel beige which I never liked for myself. I wear true white and bright winter white. I was one of the first coded and a model for a well known salon here. Most people are pulled to decorate their home in their season.

@@ANNAREID29Gray hair affects which colors look best from your palette, but I know that someone can change palettes within their range. Often, people's skintone and eye color soften with age, so someone might shift from a Bright/Clear Spring to a Light Spring, or from a True Summer to a Soft Summer, for example. In the original Color Me Beautiful book, the instructions included covering up your hair with a white towel so that hair color wouldn't affect your perception of how the swatches look on you.

The thing is, there are so many different color systems. There's overlap in some of them, but some systems give pastels to winters and others give it to summers. Draping fabric in natural light is best. The system i was done with in the 80s was basically: winter is black and white and navy and other dark cool season colors, browns, creams, peach, teal etc are autumn, pastels, light grey, and "winter" white are summer, and bright, warm colors like melon, camel, aqua, royal blue are spring.

I think the words that describe it the best are that you look washed out when you're in your wrong color palette. That's what I noticed about myself too when the color is wrong. That's the first thing that comes to mind: This washes me out.... The biggest place where I've noticed all of this color scheme stuff is when a woman wears a red lip. That red lip HAS to be the right one or it will RUIN the entire makeup look. For me, I only look good in Brick reds or mauve reds. No orangey reds, no pinky reds and in most cases even some blue reds don't work on me. Mauve under tone red looks best and on the blue reds it depend on how fair or tan my face is. A Red Lip HAS to be the right one to look good! :)

That was really helpful, Anna! I recently had mine done, and although it wasn't a revelation as I'd first had them done years ago in the early 90s, it was more nuanced now than then, as you found out! It has been helpful, although the challenge is then to find garments in "your" colours that you actually want to wear!

I just had mine done in July. It's the most interesting thing. I was just as confused as you, and was often wearing all the wrong colors. For one, I kept leaning toward warm greens, because my eyes are hazel green. But in that lighting with a professional, it was SO obvious. I'm a True Winter for sure. What was interesting was the realization that while dressing for special occasions and speaking engagements, I always reached for those True Winter power colors. Instinctively, they made me feel more confident. (I was also delighted to hear my type gets to keep black! lol) Definitely a recommended experience!

First of all, I want to say I really enjoy watching your channel - you are very natural and have a great sense of humour. Now I wanted to comment because I am so happy you had a colour analysis done in person. I am a colour analyst myself and went through quite a journey before becoming an analyst myself. Literally every result I had done online was different - I was soft cool and deep in one and Jeweltone summer in another - neither of those colours worked for me. Then I had a colour analysis in person and I am a Bright Spring just as you. While I was trained to provide colour analysis online I don't do it because I simply believe that we cannot rely on the accuracy of a photo plus the effect the colour has on our skin is so subtle and nuanced, we simply cannot see it from a photo. I would recommend you to ignore your True Spring result and just go with the Bright Spring palette - it is a wonderful palette and you will absolutely shine. I look forward to more videos seeing you wearing your colours ❤

You can still use things that are not in your color family by adding a bright scarf or sweater/jacket. I was always a winter when I had dark brown hair, now I have let it go white, gray. I put on a gray shirt and wow, I could wear a different color. It is always an indicator when you naturally gravitate to certain colors that you feel good in. That strong blue color looks great on just about everyone. Going out in natural light is an excellent idea. I have gone out thinking I was matching my blacks only to find my shoes were navy - ugh. I had two pair of matching shoes, one pair navy, one black. Yes I did go out wearing one of each!

This was a really helpful video. I had my colors done when I was 18 back in the early 1980s (I am a winter) and I have found it useful my whole life. Even now that I have some grey hair it still seems to be true. I can’t wear yellows or oranges at all. I look sick in them. I have not heard about the bright vs true vs neutral sub categories of color palettes before. That was very interesting. I think the color analyst did a great job on you. You do look great in bright spring colors. I agree that the pastels aren’t as good on you compared to brights. I really like the on screen comparisons you showed during the video. It was easy to see the differences…and I don’t think color analysis is an easy thing to see for most people. So, great job on teaching us the differences. This was well done ❤

Color analysis has changed a bit in the last few years. Along with many others, I bought the Color Me Beautiful book (I had it in 1981 when it came out) and learned that I was a "Spring" which was pretty enlightening. This year I learned that the 4 seasons have subseasons so that was a new development. After doing some research again I came to the conclusion that I am a Bright Spring like you (it is easier for us to wear black than it is for True Springs) and that makes a lot of sense and helps with shopping now. Things do keep evolving!

I had my colors analyzed back in the late 70’s and was told then that I was a Spring, before there were subcategories! Later on I began to doubt my undertone and bought more Summer colors. Now that my hair is graying, I find I need to rethink my values again! With online advice groups, people tell me I’m a “Light Spring”-which means the original analysis might have been right all along 🤷🏼‍♀️. The problem is finding autumnal clothing in light Spring colors without looking out of place! That is the real challenge-especially living in a warm climate, as you know! (I’m in Houston, transplanted from the SF Bay Area as you will note from my Warriors t-shirt 😂!)

Have you ever tried looking at your overlapping colours from your sister seasons? Especially for neutrals? Still won't help with the autumn vibe, but might give a few more options, especially if you can work with some of the true spring neutral crossover coloura

I love this; I still have the original "Color Me Beautiful" book from the 80's! I could never fully figure out if I was a summer or a winter because I felt like I could get away with certain colors from both palettes - until I went gray! Now I know I'm Definitely a Winter. Clear, dark, true, bright? Who knows. I don't really concern myself too much with that. I do know I look best - like you - in the bright, saturated hues. Also, I have to say it was very confusing when I was younger because I did have some red highlights in my hair and a hint of green (hazel) in my brown eyes - so the prevailing wisdom would say you're a warm season - but I look sickly in those colors!

The red you’re wearing looks fantastic on you! It’s your power color! I can’t tell what color your eyes in your lighting maybe green or brown but not blue. I think that’s why the blue shirts didn’t go with your coloring. I did an online color analysis during the pandemic and for $20 I felt she did a good job and I emailed her questions for further qualification. I wanted to do it again in person but saw that the professional charges $300 so no thanks. I totally believe in color analysis and think it’s a powerful tool for dressing.

Hey Anna, I had it done a few months ago. Im a neutral spring, which is warm, light and muted. It really helped me, I was wearing a lot of black and was tired of it. I always learned from people around me that some colours like blue and red would look good on me and it never felt right. And now I know why. My skin tone is neutral but I'm leaning more on the warmer side. I actually love a lot of the new colour options I got from the analysis. So I loved the experience, it makes me want to experiment more. It was so cool to see what the colours did to my face. Very helpful for make-up aswel. The wheel shown at 3:42 is different from another 4-seasons-with-3-subgroups framework that I know (from Sarah Ryan and from Colour Analysis Studio - both highly recommended to watch, especially CAS uploads a LOT of sessions with clients). In the wheel shown here the order of the seasons is like in the calendar: at the top right quadrant there is spring, and in clockwise order then summer, autumn winter. In the other system (that I find better) *summer and autum swap places* in the circle (and there is a good reason for that). The subgroups in that framework are positioned as follows (starting in the top right quadrant and then in clockwise order). _Spring Bright_ Spring Light * _Spring Warm_ Now comes the difference to the system shown in this video (the position of autumn and summer is swapped), it is not the order as per the calendar but _Autum Warm_ Autumn Deep * _Autumn Soft_ _Summer Soft_ Summer Light * Summer Cool _Winter Cool_ Winter Deep * _Winter Bright_ - the circle closes here, winter bright and spring bright meet at the 12 o'clock position. Even within a season most people look better in the colours of 1 or 2 of the season's subgroups and THEN they usually *can borrow colours from the OTHER season that is close* (see italic, that neighbour is a subgroup from another season, in half the cases even with the "wrong" hue. Hue is warm or cool. And the middle subgroups (that have only neighbours from the same season) can borrow from the opposites ( see * ). IF a person looks good in the colours of ALL 3 subgroups of their season, then they are a TRUE sping, summer etc. That is rare btw. In which case it is unlikely that they can borrow from outside their season. But plenty to chose from as they have all the colours within their season. Again a difference to the system shown here: in the wheel at 3:42 "true" is depicted as the middle subgroup of each season. In the other system "true" would ENCOMPASS all 3 subgroups of a season. (So there are differences for the names of the subgroups and what qualities are attributed to that subgroup). The middle subgroups are spring light / autumn deep / summer light / winter deep - and those 4 middle subgroups can be combined in 2 pairs, which share a characteristic that can be also very important for how a colour looks next to the face of a person. The autumn deep colours are so deep & dark that hue (cool or warm) becomes insignificant. So these persons normally also can wear winter deep colours and look really good in them even though they are the wrong hue. Likewise the characteristic "light" can be almost as important as the hue (cool for summer light or warm for spring light). So they can wear each other's palette well (at least a part of the other subgroup of the foreign season) "True" in the other framework adds even more nuance - it means as opposed to the people that can stray (and cannot wear all subgroups of their own season equally well). Which might explain some confusion, if people are fairly sure what season (or even subgroup) they are, but KNOW they look good in a few other colours (that should be wrong for them). The borrowing thing (shared characteristics) explain that. And the other trait always has to do with intensity / contrast. The italic means subgroups that are neighbours - and these two can borrow colours from each other even though they are from a different season. There are two pairs of subgroups (deep winter resp. autum + and light spring resp. summer) that are opposites. Again they can borrow colours from each other. In the wheel / system I prefer high intensity types are on the top and below is „low intensity. Bright means the pigment is unaltered the „pure“ colour resp. only mixed with other clear colours or with white to create a pastel. Winter types have good natural contrast in their face (incl. hair). Spring types have also good colouring and natural contrast in their feature. Spring types need the warm hues and are not quite as intense as winter, but usually they have a clear and well defined - sometimes striking - eye colour (as opposed to the soft grey-green-amber, the not quite clear eye white and the ashy hair colour of summer types for instance). Spring types can have rosy cheeks and lips, have sometimes golden hair (or a nice brown, as opposed to ash brown or ash blonde. Or sometimes the hair is red). Often they have a bit of a tan, etc. As for soft or muted - that means that there is a bit of grey or brown in the colours of the palette. The colours appear toned down, dusty, soft - and they are right for the low intensity types. Every colour can be toned down when you mix a bit of dark pigment into it. So they are „softer“. You can try that out with water colours or with an online colour tool. And in the system I prefere on the left there are the cool tones, whereas on the right side there are the warm hues. Where the seasons meet each other - the subgroups that are neighbours are usually a good fit to borrow colours from. (this is why summer and autumn swapped places, and the subgroups are arranged in different order). Bright spring can stray into the neighbour bright winter: wrong hue (not warm but cool) - however the intensity and clearness of colours is ideal. Winter normally is too intense for summer. However, if the characteristic cool is very important some colours from cool winter will look good on cool summer (and better than a lot of summer colours from soft or light summer). A man that is a warm spring choses warm autumn colours for his work wardrobe. (One of the partners of a color analysts of Colour Analysis Studio. The middle subgroup in every season has no neighbours that are not in the same season - but they share important characteristics with the opposites These are two pairs. Deep Winter and deep Autumn are opposite to each other. Deep is almost more important as the hue (cool or warm). There are 3 subgroups per season and if a person belongs to ONE subgroup (the other 2 subgroups work kinda but are not spectacular) then one can most likely also borrow from another season. That could be even a warm or cool season. TRUE spring, summer, ... are the more rare case when ALL 3 subgroups of the season work equally fine. Within the seasons there are still some (substantial differences) - and for most clients 1 - 2 subgroup of the "right" season will still work better. Take for instance bright ! spring. That palette would even include neon orange or yellow. As opposed to light spring - still clear colours (no grey or brown added) but in a pastell. And then there is WARM spring. Warm spring types would not look good in most of the bright spring colours - but they can very well borrow from the neighbouring autumn subgroup. Which is warm Autumn. As Anna can borrow (some colours) from bright winter - it means that for her the characteristic _bright_ (bright spring, bright winter) when it comes to having a flattering colour next to the face. So a part of this winter subgroup palette will work for her - but not the others (deep winter will certainly not be good, and cool winter will be Meh as well)

You definitely look best in bright colors! So do I. People have criticized me for wearing them and even acted like I don’t know how to dress, in the past, but I was analyzed and I’m between Light and Bright Spring. Warm is my tertiary characteristic, because I’m also Warm-Neutral. It was a validating experience. I guess I did know what looked good. I think some people just feel bright colors are “too much,” or they don’t work for them, so they assume they don’t work for anyone. I purchased many muted clothes to try to conform in my lifetime, regrettably. Now, I wear them when I want my doctor to take my illness seriously 😂. My favorites Bright Spring palette is My Color Style. I think you would like it, considering the shades you choose. I am glad you have the confidence to rock your colors. No roots, no brown at all. I defintiely needed help learning how to be a blonde. The lady I went to is an experienced professional. She did the draping and showed me differences, side by side, which was a huge help. It's not cheap, but I for sure will save a lot of money shopping for clothes and makeup. To me it is very worthwhile. And I'm a Light Spring! In the COlor Alliance system, I am a Light Sedona Spring.

I haven't had it done professionally but have learned that the ultra saturated cooler shades make me look like I have the flu which is the opposite of what I was told as a teen. I learned this by purchasing a really pretty sapphire wool coat and anytime I tried to wear it, it looked really off and friends asked if I was feeling ok. After that, I realized that if I want to wear those colours, it's better to incorporate them into my wardrobe as shoes or a bag so they are further away from my face.
