If you're looking for content ideas, I would love to see a detailed tutorial on Tsukamaki. I've been wanting to do a few smaller knife handles in the Tsukamaki style and have been researching the technique. I've found little in the way of good tutorials. Particularly of how to accomplish the ending knots properly. Your tutorials on other things are some of the best available so I have no doubt that you could make sense of the Tsukamaki technique better than what's out there currently. Beautiful blade work, by the way!

I personally like the mono steel better, the hammones are just so purdy the folding pattern just kinda distracts. Gorgeous work as always 👏

Peter Johnsson has some great vids discussing certain attributes of European swords - balance points, nodes of no vibration, etc. Are these attributes considered in the design of Japanese swords as well? If so, I think this would be a topic that many would be interested in.

Really interesting video Walter. Are authentically created Japanese sword blades ever polished to a mirror finish? If yes how does that affect the appearance of the hamon?
@logikgr
@logikgr 5 жыл бұрын
Usually the hamon will be more of a matte finish because of different hardness levels, the polishing compounds used act differently depending on the hardness of the material - and so it leaves a nicely defined boundary.

It would be a tough choice, but I just got engaged so I don't think one of your blades is in the cards at the moment. Hopefully, you will continue to put them on your website as they become available. I may have one of your blades in the future.

I thought that they folded the steel to layer different grades of steel?
@gushlergushler
@gushlergushler 4 жыл бұрын
It depends... traditionally the flattened wafers or tamahagane were folded to rid the steel of impurities. Thusly they only used the tamahagane as their base metal, it being sorted after its carbon content. There are different construction techniques but usually there would be a billet of higher carbon and one of lower carbon steel, those two were then combined via forge welding. I believe you are thinking of modern "damascus" steel, aka pattern welded steel where you take different sorts of steel, which react differently to etchant via for example their nickel content, a mostly visual reason thusly. So no, traditionally folding was done so you could rid the unclean tamahagane impurities, in modern times you layer differernt steels for visual effects in the finished blade. Hope this clears things up.

Any idea how many folds you would need until the steel was essentially homogenous? Or is that impossible? Just thinking about it seems like it can't really be done, as long as there are "layers" it's not homogenous, therefor, impossible. But I'm just guessing and defer to more experienced /knowledgeable minds

A ninja sword is just a shorter katana with full size katana fittings. The straight ninja swords you see in movies are a Hollywood invention.

I recently saw an episode of forged in fire, some poor guy had to take a pile of oversized BBs and forge it into blade to chop cow bones in half. How BS is that show? You have 45 seconds to forge a knife that can do things you would never do lol. I have only watched a few episodes and there were 2 episodes with smiths I actually heard of and like. Some skinny guy named Walter, and a monolith named Trollsky. Both of them got knocked out of the competition. Walter love your work. But I think we need to gang up and kick Trollsky in his butt and get him to make a blade or 2 and more videos.
