Walther's PDP Steel Frame: Duty or Race Gun?

We've been a fan of Walther's PDP lineup since it first came out. The PDP provides a ton of value for the dinero. The new PDP Steel Frame does exactly what it says, replaces the polymer frame with a steel frame. Allegedly it is the marriage between duty and race.

I recently picked up a PDP Professional Acro. Absolutely fantastic gun! Also, those who are saying to buy a Canik for less… If you want a Rolex, you want a Rolex and a Steiner won’t do it. Sure it looks the same, it still tells the time and it’s made out of steel… Still not a Rolex.

Thank you very much for this review. You are spot on! I am generally speaking a hammer fired gun guy however, my Q4 SF is a gun that I so enjoy shooting that I take it to the range with me nearly every time I can. The weight is perfectly centered over there, and while she is heavy, the balance is perfect. I was a little concerned by the high bore axis, but like you guys, I was unbelievably surprised by how soft shooting a firearm this is. The trigger is otherworldly for a striker fired gun and dare I say easily matches many if not, most of my hammer fired guns. I would take my Q4 SF to a competition any day, if I didn’t have so many other firearms to shoot… However, it has made its way into my rotation at the range, and even in my appendix. My big question is what is the difference between the Q4 SF and the PDPSF in 4 inches?

Damn, B+ from a guy with a ZZ Top level beard, on the curve that's really solid. I've struggled emotionally with the Walther PDP for going on 3+ years. I'm emotionally attached to the 1911, the Glock 17 and the CZ 75 all for completely different reasons. But for $600 the PDP is a smoke show. I don't like red dots at all but the weird combination of both my PDPs and the Holosun 507 with the green reticle remains a mystery to me, it's accurate and fun to shoot. Guns and golf are very similar to me, people get way into the tech of stuff, start focusing on handicap or "groups" and lose sight of the entire reason for doing both. I like the mountains on this channel, shooting outside is just really fun.

Considering the fact that the Walther pdp is the main competitor of the Glock 19, then Walther did something that Glock did not. He made the main pistol in iron. This pistol can serve you well for 100 and perhaps 200 years. Can the Glock 19 do it? When I buy this reliable iron friend, my grandson will thank me when he gets behind the wheel of my old Dodge Challenger Hellcat

Great video. I think the 5” match SF or even the 4.5” SF would be closer to the “unholy union between duty gun and race gun”. The 4” is dope. The 5” Match SF is another level though. I own mine and it’s an absolute pleasure to shoot. It’s like shooting a BB gun 😂 I used to think “it’s too expensive”. Then when I shot my polymer 5” PDP next to my Steel Frame 5”… NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENT. They’re worth the money in my opinion. I paid for mine. No social media influencer freebies. This is a solid 2011 alternative. I was on the fence about the staccato P vs the 5” match SF. After shooting the P…the 5” was a better experience for me. Maybe 30% softer in my configuration as well. I recommend anyone who thinks they’re not worth it: find one or someone who owns one and shoot it.

The performance trigger itself is worth its weight in gold… I upgraded the trigger in the polymer frame and it made a world of difference. I like Walther but the steep price point on the steel frame is a reach for sure. Mind you I own 2 PDPs, a 4” and 4.5” polymer pistol. The issue is always the parts and aftermarket support… it’s slim pickings and very little info on the upgrades.

No worries gents. Also wanted to note - by same volume/design, a full metal frame often even sends the rounds a bit faster as more energy and slower slide movement adds to increased total compression/burn. (Less energy being send backwards than forward as the bullet is less resistance than the weight behind it, it's not by much, but is measurable as a small variance on bench testing)

Love the channel gentlemen! In my opinion, the polymer frame PDP sucks! Mine had terrible fit/finish and was snappy as hell. Very nice trigger, but very disappointing overall. Maybe the steel frame is truly better? I’m glad you disclose to your viewers when a manufacturer sends you a product for you to review. Unfortunately, the manufacturer also cherry picks what is sent, which negates the review a little bit. Not a jab at you guys, but marketing in general.

Aluminum framed guns run in the 700-1500 range depending on what is offered...this gun uses steel which is going to increase wear on the machines, so the price break down makes a fair bit of sense. At the end of the day, you're not forced to buy one. Plenty of good guns out there.

In the real world, what's the difference between "race" and "duty?" You could carry 10 different pistols or go with Occam's Razor.
@CT-Woods
@CT-Woods Ай бұрын
Many race guns are super smooth to shoot, but can struggle in adverse conditions like mud or dust better. This isn't always true, but it's enough of a difference to be noticeable. No firearm is perfect, but "duty" pistols are something you can use "in the field" and reasonably expect to work despite environmental factors. A lot of race gun designs (IE flared mag well, ported slides, hair triggers and light recoil springs) ultimately are undesirable when used for more practical, everyday duty use. You will find these features to induce points of failure or even just simply be annoying for the operator to manage with a uniform or a vehicle. I would further add that the biggest thing is cost. A department is not going to spend money on a steel frame PdP because the frame is more solid or it shoots lighter. Departments have budgets and go with an affordable, yet reliable, option for their officers/contractors.
