Tigers in the Himalayan foothills, filmed by famous hunter and conservationist Jim Corbett.
Edward James (aka Jim) Corbett was one of India’s most famous big game hunters who, improbably, became one of its most significant conservationists. Filmed in the Himalayan foothills, this home movie, one of several he made, includes some detailed footage of tigers - drinking at a stream and feasting on their kill. Sadly, the opening of the film features a dead tiger, too.
Born in 1875 in Nainital, Uttarakhand, Corbett recorded his hunting exploits in a series of books including Man-Eaters of Kumaon - hugely popular boys’ own adventures that continue to be widely read. Corbett progressed from shooting the wildlife to preserving it and helped to form both the Association for the Preservation of Game in the United Provinces and the All-India Conference for the Preservation of Wild Life. Corbett left India with the rest of the British in 1947, and moved to Kenya where he died in 1955. India’s oldest national park was re-named the Jim Corbett National Park in his honour later that year.

What a treasure! So much of Jim Corbett's film was damaged by moisture and other environmental problems, that it's almost a miracle that this survived. Thank you for sharing it with us!

Those were the days when wild life abounded the vast stretch of forests. Jim Corbett narrative of his hunts, terrain and the people are superb and endearing. He takes you along with him in another world feeling the scare and joy of his ventures. You feel a part of his entourage. Times gone with the wind.. Raja Asad Habib

Jim Corbett was not just a skilled hunter and woodsman, but he was kind hearted and sensitive to the culture of the Indian people. I am happy that his name lives on via the National Park for tigers!

He was a famous hunter of maneater tigers and leopards, and paradoxically, a renowned conservationist. One of the largest nature reserve in North India still bears his name.

Jungles were rich and human activities were minimal those days . That was the time when Cheetah use to roam in india . And now compare to today forest are shrinking and fragmented and billions are spent still so many species are about to extinct like great Indian bustard , pigmy hog and sangai Deer and Hangul .

I believe technology has taken a surge too late, by 1800s if, cameras with internet were available with folks, the real beauty of Indian forests would have amazed the entire universe. Too sad that from 1900-2010 India has already lost 37% of its forests occupancy geographically excluding Marsh coasts of Sunderban and Other coastal occupancy.
