Learn about the Northern Mariana Islands' flag and those that came before it.
The music played during the video is an instrumental version of the territory anthem of the Northern Mariana Islands, “In the Middle of the Sea.” The song was composed in the 1940s and adopted in 1996.

Japan did not invade the Marianas nor did it declare war on Germany. Germany Lost World War One, and was required to relinquish all its overseas territories. Japan was then granted authority to Administer the Northern Marianas and Caroline's Islands by the league of Nations. Then after the bombing of pearl harbor it annexed the Marianas and Caroline Islands into its empire.
