The first Chinese pop star and actor to be invited speak at the Oxford Union, Wang Leehom is the perfect ambassador for Chinese pop music and commentator on the emergence of "World Pop," not only because he has sold millions of albums and consistently been one of the hottest names in Chinese music since his debut in 1995, but also because of the unique journey he has taken from his childhood home of Rochester, New York, to concert stages and movie sets around the world.
Formally trained at Williams College and the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Leehom has written and recorded songs in a large variety of styles, including pop, rap, hip-hop, jazz and R&B, and is also known for his pioneering infusion of traditional Chinese elements and instrumentation into contemporary music. In addition to his successful solo concert tours, the latest of which will bring him to The O2 in London on April 15, Leehom's diverse musical talents have seen him perform onstage with everyone from Usher to Kenny G to the Hong Kong Philharmonic, with which he appeared as as a guest conductor and violin soloist.
Additionally, Leehom is an acclaimed actor who has starred in the Golden Lion Award-winning "Lust, Caution" from Ang Lee, "Little Big Soldier" opposite Jackie Chan and the self-written and directed "Love in Disguise". He is also well known for his philanthropic work and environmental advocacy, which were cited as reasons he was the only Chinese recording artist selected as a torchbearer for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
With over 33 million followers, Leehom is among the most followed personalities on Weibo (a Chinese analogue to Twitter).

beautiful speech...watch it in 2021 after chinese filmindustry and music brought me to be inerested in China and even learning Mandarin. So he is absolutely right with what he says. China is not just it`s politics but a beautiful, colourful, lively country with a young generation they can be more than proud of. Wang Lee Hom is doing a great job!!!....(and now at the age of about 45 in 2021 I must say: he didn`t look that much older than Wang Yibo with his 23 years at New Year`s concert or did he appear less energetic....Stunning and probably because of the genes as a descendant of the dragon... :-)

It's ironic that he expounds the importance of balance in any relationship, including marriage ( so as to sustain it). If he had been walking the talk, the problems in his marriage could have been solved.

Where ever I went or lived in, I always find myself as a minority, may it be as a Chinese/Asian or as a western influenced Chinese (or what is known as a "banana", white on the inside, yellow on the outside). Now, I pride myself as bilingual and appreciator of music from both cultures. I am unique in my own way. Leehom will always be my idol, coming from similar backgrounds. Not only does he stood up for Chinese music, he also stands for being western influenced and not afraid to showcase it. :D

I am a big Leehom fan and his final message of music breaking boundaries is great and all, but it's just so idealistic and simplified.. this 'soft power imbalance' can't just be re-distributed simply through arts, it is a product of hundreds of years of the world's history and the West's much more influential cultural dominance in arts, science and politics

loved this talk. This talk covers important issues and is very well written and delivered. It did get a little bit "simplistic", idealistic and almost "Family of Man" type of optimistic near the end (not really addressing power difference, mapping, cultural hegemony, etc. and the intricate issues that have kept people "apart"). But as artists, we ultimately believe in the power of our creation and in stories; music and film, in this regard, are truly powerful art forms. good job!

As an Asian I started speaking English because of him. I know it sounds funny. But I was happy I once talked to him in person in English (that I had learned from watching him) at the young age. Always influential and inspirational. Amazing guy.

It does remind me that, after 88rising's music festival, there was an Asian man held Rich Brian and said that he had been waiting for this day for too many years. Just similar to Leehom addressed here. We can see the progress these Asian musicians had made... Thank you!
