Milnes played Scarpia in the 1976 movie of Tosca filmed entirely on location in Rome. Raina Kaibavanska (sp?) was Tosca, and Domingo played Caravadossi. Milnes was the most arresting, dramatic, and musical Scarpia of all, his voice at its peak, his acting magnificent. The movie itself is exrtremely well directed, beautifully cast.. and beautifully produced. I can no longer get it on youtube, but if anyone else can, look for it.

To me, this duet with Milnes and Domingo, made the most "sense" because of the English translations provided! These two drop-dead gorgeous men were acting their parts in synchronicity with the music, not just singing a wonderful piece of music. I have listened to all the other versions mentioned here, and can distinguish where some voices may have more preferable characteristics that others don't, but keep returning to this because the visualization that these two fine artist/singers/actors provide makes the scene alive and real with emotional meaning. Of course, that was Domingo's forte: in movies and on television, making opera accessible to all. It was really a golden age as well.

This is wonderful, not just the singing but the acting as well. Find Milnes and Domingo in Tosca with Milnes as Scarpia and Domingo as Caravadossi. They played off each other well, with Domingo a strong Mario, unlike other tenors. I also love James Levine. Bravissimi.

Oh, I'm so jealous you got to see him live!! I never got that chance! But I did watch him on PBS every chance I got, and I was very happy to see him perform on PBS's recent airing of the tribute to Pavarotti. Milnes has aged gracefully, and his voice is still powerful. He sang in an aria from Boheme. What a delight to see him again, even if only on TV! But yes, his Iago is the best. I remember watching him as he sang "Credo in un Dio Crudel". Gave me boosebumps!

This duet is always an arrow through my heart. My most humble suggestion is that all these wonderful artists have their own distinctive "signature " so that there is, perhaps, no "best" performance, afterall, but a matter of individual taste? After all, there are many superb chefs in New York and London ! A most pleasant dilemma. (Just having fun here. Don't really know if my main thought holds up under scrutiny or not)
@Brianna080519197 жыл бұрын
Right. Tell this to the ladies waging an almost religious war on who was the one and only German lyrical tenor, Fritz Wunderlich or Rudolf Schock. They were both excellent singers, I adore them both, but I have no understanding for going for each other´s throat about the question who was the best. They both sang Nadir in German, each of them breathtaking in his own way. Best wishes from Northern Germany

Of course your thoughts hold up - they are your own thoughts and as such no one can assail them! I agree that our tastes dictate who we prefer - and even the so-called experts disagree violently about which singers are 'best'. Vive our own opinions.

Gracious, I remember this very duet (and Verdi´s no less beautiful "Don Carlos" duet) sung by these two singers on GDR TV. I was 15, came across Placido Domingo for the first time - and was enchanted forever.
@ronaldduquette95455 жыл бұрын
The first time I heard this, it was Bjorling and Merrill, and I loved it - and still do. But Milnes and Domingo do a beautiful job of it - and no matter whether it's the one or the other, I am always in tears by some moments into the piece of music. I suppose that for me, as a native French speaker, it's as much WHAT they're singing about - the importance of being friends, and being faithful - that gets me. I just flat enjoy both of the versions, and so should we all. We are so lucky to have the means to remember these performances. What both sets of singers do is LISTEN to each other - and Milnes and Domingo, IMHO, are two of the absolute best "acting singers" that ever graced a stage. You can believe them.

Opera in the Outfield is at Nationals Stadium, for those who are interested, and it's free to all. The Mars company that makes M&Ms is the largest sponsor and there is lots of free chocolate. This past spring I saw The Magic Flute by Mozart which was done in English and was hilarious. It's a simulcast which is better than sitting in a stuffy opera house. The food is great ball park stuff!!!

6ft 2 I believe, though he looks taller. He wrote an essay on Rigoletto in David Hamilton's The Metropolitan Encylopedia and he mentioned his height and how he had to bend(is that the right word?) his knees to play the part. He says the same thing in his Homage to Verdi documentary. And you are right, they are gorgeous- just one of the reasons while I love them as much as I do- especially Milnes(quite possibly one of the most handsome male singers in opera)

I'm so jealous that you got to meet Sherrill Milnes!! He's been my opera idol for 25 years!! And yes, this was a wonderful aria -- Miles and Domingo.
