In this video I go over my thoughts and how I tune. Tuning drums is subjective, but you want the drum to ring and have a tone. This means turning lugs and tightening the heads so they will have tone. Don't just tune your kit by what you see/hear on you tube or instagram, tune for great sounding drums.
Also keep in ming what you are doing. If the song calls for dead/muted drums then do that(i.e. Come Together by The Beatles). If you are working with a sound man or engineer in the studio listen to them, they know what they're after. Just make sure the heads are tight and will do what they are supposed to...
