I installed a 1:1 seven stage tankless undercounter RO system followed by a UV sterilization stage and drinking water faucet in the countertop. I run the reject stream back to the fresh water tank and since we only make 2-3 gallons of drinking water per day the impact of the reject stream going to the 90 gallon fresh tank is insignificant. I have tested the water routinely for the last two years and the system performs wonderfully. No more carrying heavy cases of bottled water. No more disposing of countless plastic water bottles. We couldn’t be happier.

Hi guys - we have be RVing for the past 3 years. Lugging water bottles got really old really fast. We installed an Acuva and love 💕 it. The water has a great taste and gives you peace of mind knowing it is even better than what you get in plastic bottles. We are thankful for all the wonderful tips and information you have provided. Safe travels 😊🇺🇸

Hi Shiammi! We're with you on that in concept. But since the size and cost of a whole-house system like that would be a bit much for us, and our primary concern is the water we drink, we're really happy with our current set-up.

I use a whole house UV filter for my motorhome. So everything in my couch runs though two charcol filters and the UV filter. This way nothing grows in the pipes.

Thanks for the video guys. I'm curious - if I wanted to do one of these without the little faucet it comes with, could I install the unit in the basement, near the water pump, so that it purifies everything going through the lines - whether from the city or fresh water supplies?

Great question Casey! Unfortunately the Acuva doesn’t have the capacity to sanitize that volume of water moving through it so quickly. That’s why it’s restricted to 2 L per minute. They do make a larger model that does 5 L per minute, which could handle that higher flow. But since we’re really concerned about protecting the water we drink, and not so much everything else, we’re happy with it just taking care of the water at the sink.

I’ve got a rare circumstance that I could really use your help with. I don’t need my water to be perfect, I don’t like to haul around water, but I can’t post in a primitive campground and the county delivers a 500 gallon tank on a trailer that I use over the course of a month to pump into my RV weekly. They made the mistake of buying a white opaque tank and the sun heats up the water and it sometimes turns green. Their solution was to pour bleach into it. They gave me chemical. I use test strips to make sure there’s enough chlorine in there to kill the bacteria but not enough to harm me. The issue is these chemicals they’re giving me aren’t bringing up the free chlorine and I think I’ve been ingesting some kind of cleanser. I’m not having any adverse side effects but I can taste it. I’m thinking about just using plain Clorox bleach, but wanted to know if there’s something better. I’ve looked online and most of the alternatives for water. Purification are extremely expensive, I just need something to keep the water from growing bacteria, without changing the taste too much and without any negative negative health side effects. I’ve been googling it for months and I am still confused and don’t know what I need to know. Would the system in this video alleviate all of my issues if the water turns green or if I put chemicals in it to keep it from turning green? I’m not too excited about drilling a hole in my countertop. I already have very little space. There’s also the icemaker issue, my refrigerator has a built-in icemaker. I have found zero information on how to keep the water in county water tank free of bacteria, other than a few cap of bleach for every 500 gallons. The test strips they gave me are for a pool, drinking water test strips are super expensive. I plan on continuing to do this work for many years, so I just wonder if you have any information that could be helpful. 🙏🏻💕

I’m also trying to figure out how long the Lippert acuva lasts! The Amazon description says it lasts for 371 gallons, that would be a month. I’m sure I’m reading it wrong but if I live full-time in my RV, how long should that product keep disinfecting my water?
@RVgeeks

We'd probably go with just plain, liquid bleach (not the gel formulas that are "No spill" since they have extra chemicals in them) and follow the guidelines from the EPA for properly disinfecting water for storage (www.cdc.gov/healthywater/emergency/creating-storing-emergency-water-supply.html - they recommend 1 teaspoon per every 4 cups of water... so you'll need to do some math/conversions to figure out the correct amount for 500 gallons, but it's more than just a few caps full... if our quick math is correct, you're more in the neighborhood of 2.5 GALLONS of bleach to properly treat 500 gallons of water). That will ensure that anything in the water is killed and should leave enough chlorine left to KEEP the water safe, but without being so large an amount it affects you (though it may dry your skin/hair out more... so you might want a charcoal filter at your drinking water and/or shower head). Having an Acuva at your sink for drinking water would certainly be a way to ensure that you don't get anything you shouldn't in a glass... but if you treat the big tank properly, you shouldn't specifically need it. If you don't like the taste/smell of the chlorine... a simple, inline carbon filter will remove most, if not all, of the smell/taste.
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 4 ай бұрын
And just to clarify... the listing we see for the Acuva shows that the UV-C LED unit itself is rated to treat as much as 31,700 GALLONS of water. Of course, the pre-filter will need to be changed (at least once a year or two) to ensure it's properly removing particulate matter that bacteria can "hide in the shadow" of when passing by the UV light. We've had our Acuva unit for years... and have only changed out the filter when needed and it was still running strong when we sold the RV (we'll be putting a new one into our new RV once we take delivery). Hope this helps.

@@RVgeeks I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I have used a few cap fulls in the 500 gallons and had the pool test strips show liquid chlorine as high. But that’s the thing, I’m getting different answers from multiple sources, nobody seems to know, but I do appreciate your comments about what kind of bleach to use, I have always wondered, and there’s nothing listed on the bottle to explain the difference between the different types. I’ve tried to find plain bleach and it’s hard to find, everyone sells the no splash type. I appreciate the options you’ve given me, thank you so much. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

We want the Acuva for our RV and the question we have is how would someone winterize with this system? Would bypass valves need to be installed like on a water heater?
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Angel. There's a couple of ways to deal with it. You could, indeed, install bypass valves so you could isolate, and remove, the filter and then either blow out the lines, or pump antifreeze, like you would the rest of the RV (we'd just suggest unplugging power so the LEDs don't "sanitize" the antifreeze). You could also turn off the main shutoff valve (included with the install) and just drain the water out of the Acuva unit and remove (and drain) the filter. Your decision may be based on how cold it's going to get... whether it's an occasional freeze... or a full-blown Minnesota winter. 😉

Hey guys - so you don’t use any filtering before filling up your fresh water tank? The Acuva folks online told me their system doesn’t do anything for taste - do you do anything? Does this only provide a single clean source or does it also provide a supply line to the freezer ice maker? I like the solution just concerned about taste too. Thx - Rob
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob! Great questions. Our drinking water goes through three things. First through a whole-house sediment filter, then through the pre-filter under the kitchen counter, then through the Acuva unit. It’s the pre-filter (which comes with the Acuva and is just like those that feed many ordinary water dispensers) that improves taste. It’s not a panacea for all poor-tasting water, but it helps a lot. Our Acuva can indeed sanitize water to both a water dispenser and an ice maker by tee-ing the line and feeding both. But in practical terms, that’s easiest to do when the kitchen sink and fridge and on the same side of the RV, and close to each other. Our fridge is on the opposite side, so we never ran a line way over to it, so our ice isn’t treated. We keep a gallon or two of Acuva-treated water in the fridge, so we don’t use much ice. The only time we even turn it on is when we’re hooked up to what we consider to be reasonably reliable water sources, like an RV park that’s not in the middle of nowhere. Since there’s no longer-term water storage involved with making ice, we’ve been comfortable doing it this way, and never had a problem.

Hello, what sort of particle filtration do you have? Perhaps a video on the topic if you don't already have one? 😀 I can see killing bacteria as good but that device doesn't filter the water.
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John! Our RV has a whole-house sediment filter which I think we have a 5 or 10 micron filter in. The Acuva also comes with a pre-filter that not only further reduces any settlement, but also removes chlorine and heavy metals and helps improve taste overall.

How does the water quality compare to a Berkey?
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 2 жыл бұрын
We know that many people love their Berkeys, but a friend of ours has one, and when we saw it, we were stunned at how much counter space they we're losing to have it. While they are known for improving taste, the Acuva gets taste improvement from the pre-filter, which can be changes as desired.

You should be able to find a similar carbon block filter in the plumbing department at most home improvement stores. As long as the connections are correct, that should work fine.

If one is seriously concerned that the water coming into the RV is not safe to drink, how about the hot water used to wash dishes? Shouldn’t that also be purified? Our water heaters don’t raise it to boiling, do they?
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 2 жыл бұрын
The water heater certainly doesn’t raise the water to boiling, but the water that comes in contact with your dishes and then gets dried off is not a problem. It will not cause illness from any bacteria in the water. It’s ingesting the water into your body that’s the problem. You could wash your dishes in the river, dry them off, and then eat off them, and never have a problem.
