I direct seeded sugar snap peas recently. I poured out the packet into a 48" wide strip. They are growing up chicken wire and are almost 4 feet tall and thick. You can direct sow. Great video.

back in the 90's i planted sugar snaps on a bamboo structure I built shaped like a large teepee, with an opening and inside put in some brick pavers..the kids in the neighbourhood would go inside and play and when ripe time came they would just yank them off and eat them I had nothing lol

The inoculant isn't really to make that crop better...but rather future crops. Peas are nitrogen fixers, which means they pull nitrogen from the air and place it into the soil through little nodules on their roots. If you have an area that you had a heavy feeder in previously, planting peas there or beans will increase the nitrogen in the soil. Inoculant just makes that process better and more efficient.

I just found this channel and I'm glad I did. I've been looking up how to trellis my snap peas. This is my first year growing them by myself. That's how I ended up here. But, there's another video of urs that u mentioned. On the grow light, that I'll be watching. I have a hyper tough grow light and I've been trying to figure out how to suspend it up above my plants, seedlings, etc. Also, my favorite thing that u mentioned is simply the "KISS" method. LoL! I am huge fan of this method. Ur the first I've heard besides me to mention it or use it in ur everyday life. Lol So that's definitely cool. Also, one more thing, I did subscribe. Hope u and ur family has a good one and thank u for ur wise advice. Until next time.

I prefer to direct seed peas, but I soak them overnight in lukewarm-cool water before planting to speed up germination. Great video, welll narrated, thanks!

Thanks for the tips! I've read that peas are nitrogen fixers so they don't require it they actually put it into the soil. And that they are a good crop to rotate with plants that require nitrogen like tomatoes 🍅

Ive read that many professional combine farms routinely replenish tired fields by growing a big crop of soybeans during a crop rotation year, and then plowing them under (unharvested) at the end of the season. Essentially grow your own fertilizer.

Thank you so very much for explaining it nice way and how they work how they should be planted and I also believe that if they are planted indoors first, and bring out, they do more better than just direct link, but if the temperature is right in your direction of them they come more stronger. My kids take ranch dip or dressing outside and eat the peas right out of the garden dipped in ranch. They love the crunch and cool dipping sauce. I have not been able to cook anything they're gone before I can get to them😂

As a child, I suppose 3 ft in height we were sent up the garden to pick the pea pods for dinner. Sitting amoung the vines with a bowl as much got eaten as picked and later when we were podding the peas as many were consumed as mad it to the saucepan. In the UK, I think, Sugar Snap peas are pea pods which are flat and contain only vestigle peas. They are just Pea Pods. They may be imature but that is how I understand it.

Thanks! I didn't get peas in in the spring so I'll plant for fall...and remember to do it this time! I really like the idea of pot-starting; I did that with nasturtiums ("must direct sow! don't like transplanting!" -bah!) and will do as you suggest w/peas next early spring to get a leap. My fave variety is Oregon Giant Sugar Pod Pea from Nichols Garden Nursery in neighboring Oregon. Thx! Love the vids. PS: Almost forgot. I understand the inoculant powder is just a safety measure, if your soil needs it. I don't use it any more either.

Yeah, if you have rich soil (like, you've applied compost and grown things previously) you probably don't need the innoculant. If you have a brand new garden it might be worth using.

I direct sowed my sugar snaps and melting sugar snaps this year. They took off in less than a week. If it helps, I just simply put them in the dirt and water every other to every day as it gets hotter. I live in good ol West texas😊

You should try the Sugar Magnolia Tendril Peas. They are a snap pea that can take the heat. I was still picking peas from my spring planting into September last year. Side-by-side comparisons weren't even close. WAY more productive...plus the tendrils are edible. You can nibble on them while you are waiting on the peas. I eat snap peas almost every day from late spring to first freeze. BTW, I did a side-by-side comparison again this year to compare taste. They are almost indistinguishable...and the magnolia have already out produced the Sugar snaps 5-fold. I buy mine from Baker Creek.

You're comparing apples and oranges in the sweet peas. Try direct sowing the Super Sugar Snaps next time (I think you'll still get the same results :-)). I start mine in 6-packs, then put 2 or 3 of those in each 1-gallon pot, sunk in the ground to keep out the gophers. I have 3 1-gallon pots under a tomato cage to train up. Has worked for me for several years in the same place even. I even tag the first of the crop on each vine to let mature and dry to save seeds for planting next year.

Inoculant works well if you get the inoculant dust to stick to the seeds. This can either be done by adding a few drops of water to some inoculant to form a paste and roll your seeds in it or thoroughly wet the seeds and shake them in the dry inoculant dust.

Coffee grounds (mixed into the top couple of inches of soil) provides nitrogen to plants which need it.

About the legume inoculant. All legumes are themselves considered nitrogen fixers. True enough in effect but really it’s the handiwork of a soil microbe that only lives on the roots of legumes. This being only one of thousands of soil microbes that all serve specific functions. In essence, all life begins with healthy soil life. The success of the plants you grow is a fairly direct reflection of the of your soil health. Feed your soil constantly with plenty of organic matter. Plenty of manure if you can too, ruminants like goats, sheep, cattle are best. Their bodily fluids contain the enzymatic building blocks of life itself. And keep your soil covered with a thick layer of wood chips, compost, hay or even better with living cover crops like clover and buckwheat that also feed your soil biology. Never let your soil sit barren and fallow! The heat and sunlight wipes out your soil biology. Do any or all of these things and you’ll be rewarded with not only bumper crops of highly nutritious food but the knowledge that you’re serving nature in the process, feeding all the life in your little ecosystem, giving the living world a good helping hand.

TIP: I have had success growing sugar snap peas in partial sun rather than direct sun. I built a cattle panel arch trellis this year (3 panels = 12' long, 6.5' tall, 5.5' span), and I plan to grow kajari melons and chinese bitter melons (which can reach 14') on the sunward side of my arch, and sugar snap vines on the leeward side of the arch. The big translucent leaves of the climbing melons let thru just the right amount of light for the sugar snaps on the opposite side of the arch.

Thanks so much for your video. Peas are very hit and miss in Spokane, WA as the big heat can come in mid to late June. The seed trays seem to be the best way to get an early Jump on the season as peas often don't germinate well in our cool and wet Aprils.

In my location near Louisville ky, we cannot grow peas on the fall. Weather is too unreliable so check your ag extension

Any input on whats going on with the random ones that go white on the bottom and then have all their leaves go white? I can't figure it out. If it was heat, I'd figure they'd all go white. If it was nutrition, I'd figure its neighbors would do the same. However, it seems like I just get random hits 1 out of 10 of my sugar snap peas start going white and die off.

Question for you wise one. Have you ever planted peas or stringbeans in hanging baskets? I did this year along with cukes & even zucchini, just for spits & giggles! They look pretty good so far. Not sure how the C&Z'll hold up to the weight. We'll see! Good video as usual! :>)>

Was this season the harvest in that area? Probably sowed in the spring. I sprinkled it in October. Next year, we plan to spring half of the plant and lengthen the harvest season.

Yes Toshifumi, this is the main season for Sugar Snap Peas, but I well sow again about 75 days before the first hard frost for a second crop. Always good to hear from you - Eric.

I tried planting sugar peas last year in my raised bed with a soil of 50% topsoil and 50% vegetable potting soil but I think I did something wrong. I bought Bonnie brand starter plants from home Depot and planted them in mid-may. They only grew to be about 18in tall but each plant only produce a handful of peas. For some reason I can remember my grandpa's plants when I was little, growing taller and producing quite a few peapods. Any advice or is this normal for sugar peas?

The inoculate is not for the peas. It's so they fix nitagen for the next crop. I put in tomatoes when my peas start to die. I never use any fertilizers. Under my tomatoes I usually will put in green beans that have been inoculated so they feed the tomatoes too all the nitrogen they need.

I’m gonna grow them this year but the back of my seed packet says to plant them 18 inches apart and the rows 2 1/2 feet apart. I feel like that’s a lot of room for peas because every video I see people are putting a seed every 3 inches or so. I specifically I’m going to try to grow sugar daddy peas. how much room should I have between seeds and between rows in your experience? any information you can give would be amazing. Oh Lord, I direct sowed mine and they're about 2-3 inches apart. They're growing beautifully and yielding so many and it's only been about 3 weeks to a math. Good luck!

Hey GF. My tomatoes were rotting on the vine. Apparently, I watered them too much. At any rate, I picked most of what was left. I have three overflowing boxes of green tomatoes. Each box is about 5 x 5 x 5 inches. I can't leave them boxed while they ripen indoors, can I??

Should I pinch out? My plants are 2 ft tall but no flowers yet, should I pinch out the top to induce flowering or wait? 👍 I'm growing snow peas.

I'm in NC, mine didn't flower til they got about 4 feet tall! And now they're producing so much I can barely keep up! The seed packet said 70 days to harvest and I'd say that was pretty accurate, I may have gotten some in only 60 days. But anyways, it'll pay off soon!!

They will start and grow just fine without the inoculant. It is just extra money you don't really need to spend.

I don’t add inoculant. Occasionally my seeds are inoculated, but just because they come that way, not because I want it. I see no difference in inoculated vs not.

I think next time I will try then with and without inoculant. I just have to remember to mark WHICH ones have the powder on them ;)

Peas fix nitrogen into the soil the don't use it. All legumes do not need nitrogen. Tomatoes don't like nitrogen . Peas need to be planted 2 inches apart.

You can't compare two different varieties of peas with them also being direct sowed and grown in doors as well. Too many variables to get any usable data. Should have grown one variety indoors and direct sown to see the difference...
