25 years ago (1998) I started my Ebay business with $20 which is what I could afford to lose. I practiced on selling a few household items from my junk drawer. I scavenged recycled bubblewrap from the Hobby Lobby frame department and boxes from Target. I used a Intel 386 computer with an AOL dialup online connection. I was making $1500 a week after 6 weeks. My husband joined me in the business in 2010 after losing his job. We peeked out at over $1,000,000 in sales a few years ago and are approaching our 70's. We aren't performing at peak performance any longer ......but we don't need to be. Ebay has been very good to us.

I started with $23. Sold things from my home. Used library printer to print out my labels. Used boxes. Before i listed, i would "pack" several items. Take to post office self serve and weigh them. Then I'd go home with numbers and list. Already had some tape and little bubble wrap. Old newspapers for void fill. After i had $100 in my account, i bought scale. Banked a little more money and bought a light box. Was blessed by winning a Polona lable printer from The Old Paths. Have not spent any personal money, save the $23. My Ebay sales supports itself. Now able to buy my boxes, bubble, cleaning & office supplies from the account. Every 2 or 3 weeks i make a quick run to thrifts, but rarely buy. I try to keep 40 to 50 items in my store. Everything i make, i leave in the business. I'm retired and doing this as a busines, but i do not have to rely on it for income. At my 1st year anniversary, i plan on withdrawing my initial $23. I plan on taking a small quarterly draw about the 1.5 year mark. Im not making a lot but i haven't spent hardly anything. Very pleased so far. Im a hard goods anything seller. I owe my success to your videos. I started watching all kinds utube vids before starting and yours showd me everyone i needed to know about all aspects. Easy to understand and straightforward without a lot of hype. Thank you for your help.❤

Hey Scot another great video: Like you I have 20+ years selling on eBay, I think you hit most of the items needed to get started. I'm at the highest level I want to be with the space I have. With listing inventory around 500 active, with sells around 2 - 4 per day. My biggest improvement over the years was a label printer, must have in my book at any level. My main printer is the Zebra 450, with a backup Dymo 4XL that I picked up used at a yard sale, best part is that I get all my labels FREE from UPS (must have a UPS account) big time savings. Shipping supplies, I live next door to a Hospital I get tons of free boxes clean from their recycle bin, last thing, there is a business about 2 miles away I can get all their used clean bubble wrap I can ever use for free.

Both of those are really solid printers! And you've got the hook-up on shipping supplies. You're completely set up. I have NO desire have employees and be the boss again. We just want to earn enough to be able to stay at home, travel and spend time with family. Life is short and we don't want it consumed by chasing dollars we don't necessarily need.

Dear Scot, you are my online eBay Godfather, your videos showed me that it is easy to list, pack, and ship on eBay. Another reason was to clean up my home from the items I bought and was not going to use, many people would be delighted to make a room in their homes and make some money by selling the stuff they don't need. I found a few valuables in my pile and sold some for good money. I am cheap, and I already had a few shipping supplies at home when I started selling on eBay. I bought a basic scale a few years ago (to weigh yarn), and of course, I had packing tape at home (who does not?). Ask your wife, mom, grandma, or a senior neighbor lady if they have a scale they can give away or sell. Most women have kitchen scales, maybe they have more than one. I have a computer and an inkjet printer, and I've been buying labels for inkjet printers. They work well for a small number of sales, and I have not noticed that my printer ink is used up fast. I also had white gift paper I am using to wrap some of my items. I don't need boxes for most of my items, but I keep several free ones (Craigslist free stuff, my Amazon orders, free ones from supermarkets). I bought a box reducer resizer, and I highly recommend it if you need medium to large boxes with different dimensions. Our local supermarkets (and Walmart) sell single boxes, I bought one and resized it when I needed a new sturdy box. Many if not all phone cameras have a "pro" (professional) option where you can adjust the white balance and make sure the colors in photos match the real-life colors. The Pro option also allows you to make your pics lighter or darker. If you don't know much about photography, take your item and change the options in the Pro mode to see how they change your pics. I think you still need the decent lights though.

I have mine in my house. It really depends on what you sell and where you live. Some items wouldn't need climate control...some will. If I do have a metal building on my property, too. Hi we are empty nesters ….We live on a small non-working farm fortunate to have second home on property that I planned to open my own little store because I had a booth and fees were crazy..worked hard but made no money! I did plenty of sourcing for 3+ yrs for that booth, and then future store…that hasn’t happened for a multitude of reasons…I have loads of boxes and bubble wrap, printer, tape, IPad, IPhone ….I’ve watched loads of videos and want to start with items from my home …my kids kept everything because we had storage….thought I would start with that stuff as it seems to be desirable items from watching these videos. I am stuck…frozen…shipping of course seems scary to most. I do not want to list a bunch of stuff and get overwhelmed….I know I can be good to customers…guess my main question is…how important is shipping times for ratings? If you are just starting out for fun…minimal…If you include in your listing say 3-5 days before will ship out …is that a non starter? If it goes well I have lots of inventory…just scared to mess up out of the gate! Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge!

I don't think I'd put 5 days. I think people would pass you over. I'd put three, though. You could always follow up a sale and let them know that you have three day shipping. Here's something really, really important to remember. You never talk to anyone with experience shipping that is afraid of it. So, the fear you are feeling is curable with a little experience. Start with inexpensive items that are easy to ship. You can do this!

Our UPS office takes USPS packages, and USPS picks them up at the UPS location. I brought a few USPS packages to UPS and they accepted them with no issues, but one day they took the package but gave me a weird look. Hello, i enjoy your videos. My question is, when you start selling stuff from home, let's call it inventory that you have had for ever. How do you price it when you don't remember what you paid for that item. Versus what you want to sell it for. Or is does it matter since I've owned them forever. I hope I'm making sense. I'm trying to figure out the taxable incom part of selling my stuff Versus selling new items that i know what i paid for it and selling it for a profit which will be the taxable incom part of it. I know i just repeated some words, but I'm trying to be clear about what im saying. Or since im just starting out, i shouldn't worry about what I bought the items for an just sell them for what it may sell for on ebay. Thank you. Your videos are helpful.

I think I've already asked: 250 items, 1-2 sales a week. I can't list any more until I get 250 free listings again. Should I max out the free listings or have less in the starter store (and how many)?
@TheChaChingKing
@TheChaChingKing 16 күн бұрын
I would max out the listings and just keep listing. Even if it were not possible to get more free listings, you can still make enough to cover the cost of listing an item. That said, if you are only selling 1-2 items a week with 250 listings, you're not selling as much as you should be. So, a store might help because you could run some sales. There's only a few reasons items don't sell. 1. It's not something people want because it's not a desirable item or the condition is poor. 2. The price + shipping is too high. 3. The listing is of poor quality (poor pictures and/or description). Obviously, those three things don't cover ever single scenario, but they cover a massive amount of ground. I'm all for listing more than 250, with or without a store. Listing more keeps your store active and eBay will push it out more. But you need to tackle why you aren't selling a bit more.
