Very nice methodology! I have been doing a similar system with modern books that I send to CGC to flip. I've sort of refined the system to send in 15-20 books at a time, which basically reduces the shipping per book to a very minimal cost. Then I just average together the grading, pressing, and costs of books themselves and I try to keep my total avg per book around $30-$35. Interesting that you came to the same cost per book: $34.99! I go strictly for 9.8's, and I've found that the average value of a modern 9.8 is $100, pretty much no matter what moderns you send in, you will be able to sell all the 9.8's for an avg of $100. So 20 books x $35 = $700 total cost, x $100 sales avg = $1500 in sales, if I can get at least 15 of 20 books back at 9.8. Great video! Reminds me of an RB3 analysis vid. Can't wait to see more from you like this!

Now I know your secret. :-) You've mentioned your approach previously in less detail but I think it makes a lot of sense. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and share. RB3's analysis are amazing. He focuses on some of the bigger silver, bronze key issues. I wanted to take a slightly different approach by touching on less expensive modern books.

Very informative video. I've graded some books with PGX about three years ago, around the time when I was getting back into collecting comics. PGX was inexpensive and there was no need to purchase a membership in order to submit books. Back then I was very inexperienced when it came to getting books graded and decided for these reasons I would go with PGX. It was simply for archival purposes. This was also before I learned about top loaders and other methods of protecting my books. Since then I've learned more about the ins and outs of collecting (although if I'm being honest I'm still learning) through friends and other people in the comic community. This video has given me some insight into what to consider sending out to grade as well as whether or not it's worth the process. I'm still going to send out some of the many Skottie Young baby variants I have in my collection just because I think they would look great encapsulated!!! LOL!!! Great video!!!

Bro, I still feel like I’m learning. I literally have another KZfaqr schooling me on some things right now related to Original Art. Never stop learning. I’m glad that I could give you a few things to think about. At the end of the day, it’s your collecting so you’re going to slab what you slab but you want to go into with your eyes wide open. Good luck with those Scottie variants. They really are cool. I want to say I have a handful of them myself. Thanks for adding to the discussion buddy. If you have a chance, check out the the protection videos I just posted. I put up one about Mylites and another about comic book insurance. I hope you find them helpful as well. 👌🏾👌🏾

@@RegieCollects Yep, saw that as well and im excited to send some books to CGC. Just a quick question, how many books is ideal to send to CGC to reduce the amount you would pay for shipping? You may have answered this in one of the vids but I may have missed it.
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
Monir-Marcel Munir That’s not something that I’ve addressed. I tend to submit the max number of books for an invoice which is 25. That max number reduces my cost per book to the lowest possible amount. It also increases my overall spend because it’s 25 books. This has it’s pluses and minuses, right. The trick is to make sure that you send like-kind books. What I mean is that you want to keep the submitted books within the same tier and service level. Multiple tiers will result in multiple return shipments. Pressing one book but not pressing another will result in multiple return shipments. Let me know if this helps.

I like your idea of prescreening and shuffling the books...I was doing something similar when I was (and I still am) preparing books for CGC. I like the idea of figuring out the price and how CGCing it will affect it...and you are right...not every valuable book needs to be slabbed...a lot of times they tend to go hand in hand. Keys and grails tend to be the more valuable books and the ones we want to have slabbed.

Great video Regie. Extremely informative. Forensic examination of books. Math formulas. Wow. Who would ever think that aspects of comic book collecting could be so scientific? There was one additional aspect of this process I would like to call to your attention. Is any book that you are considering sending in actually scarce enough to be CGC worthy? Example: I have 14 extremely high grade copies of ASM #4 first appearance of Silk. I mean 9.8 or at worst a 9.6 grades. When you look on eBay or the CGC census that book is everywhere. I love that book but I’m not sure it’s worth it when everyone seems to have a copy already. There wouldn’t be much purpose for me to encapsulate this book other than strictly to preserve it. Thank you for this thought provoking video. Very logical and well thought out. Keep up the great work. Thank you.

Thank you for watching bud, I appreciate it. I think the grading services have changed the hobby in both good and bad ways. I find myself taking a lot more time to inspect books that I am thinking about sending in for grading. I also spend a fair bit of time thinking about if a book SHOULD be graded or not. As I mentioned in the video there are lots of reasons to get books graded. Sometimes you want to hold them for the long-term and in some cases you move them forward. I don’t do much in the way of flipping books. I’m more of a buy and hold kinda guys but there are folks that like to flip books. Check out DS Comics’ comment. He basically flips modern books to cover the costs of getting his other books graded. I think it’s a really smart approach that allows him to keep moving his collection forward. In these cases, I’m not sure that scarcity matters versus timing and pricing. For me, I really enjoyed the Thanos series and plan to keep a couple of the 9.8s in my collection long-term. With that said, 9.8s can be hard to come by and may always have a willing buyer. I did a quick scan of ASM #4 9.8s sales on eBay. Those books are selling for $120-$154/each. If your total costs are around $35/book you can make $85-$119/book. That’s not bad money. Just my thoughts.

Great video. Might I add that it is a good idea to chart the past 3 months sale price of a comic if possible. Turn around time for books can be 90 days and what a book sold for last July may not be very relevant next November. Charting prices will give a better indication of where a book may be when it finally returns from grading. Great info and solid work.

I agree with you with the final comments. Send those comics in for slab to protect them and to provide my children a rough value of the comics when I passed away. With that being said, I only submit Silver or Golden age books since those comics are very fragile and have the highest value. For modern books, I rarely do unless I bought them at a good deal in slabs or they are exceptional rare books to get like TMNT # 1 or Cerebus # 1.

More great comic info. Thanks, Regie! It seems to me, as far as buying graded comics, if you can get one for less than $40-$50, especially a 9.8, then the seller really isn't making too much off the book. It depends upon the seller and book. Keep in mind that folks get different discounts with CGC (not sure about CBCS) and they can save money by pressing themselves, shipping in bulk, etc. But, yes, generally speaking not a lot of money if they are selling $40-50. It's a "value added" business model. One quick thing to add: The Opportunity Cost of your investment. Your money is tied up sometimes for a long while before you get it back. Mis-time a Fluctuating market and margins can go straight to fees and shipping. It's the "risk" variable. So, I agree with your worst case scenario approach. With that said, it's why I choose to invest in comics for the fun of it. And maybe a little something to share with my budding artist daughter (and someday leave for her to enjoy).

Hey Regie, great video, very informative on how you go about pre grading and nice to see you showed actual costs. My question is, first I have never sent in a book for grading but would love to get some slabbed. Is it normal for cgc to do a quick press or is that something I need to ask for. Im asking because I reached out to a person on IG offering the cgc service and they said unless I get my books pressed also that they were not accepting new orders. The majority of my books are early 80's to current. Thanks for the vid!

During the submission process you decide which options you want (eg pressing). Personally, I would not submit a book that hasn’t been pressed/cleaned. The reason for that is because I want the best possible grade. Yes, it’s extra money but an important step in my mind. The pressing can be done by yourself, a third party of CCS. Does this help? Feel free to message me on IG to talk more. If you decide to pull the trigger consider the using the affiliate link in the description of my videos.

You have a great methodology and I love the way you break down the net value. One thing I think you forgot to deduct is the cost of shipping it there. I typically have to make sure grading the book is worth it. If I want to really protect a book - say Thor #390 (before Avengers Endgame it was one of my favorites before it became valuable) there are hard plastic protective covers available - unless you want to really get it graded. Anyway, that's just my 2-cents.

Hi Regie! It’s me again. You mentioned a fee of $8.00 for a quick press. I am not aware of what this actually does or why you would need this for a potential 9.8 candidate comic book. Could you please elaborate on what this about.? I am not familiar with this service or why you may need it for near mint books. I am learning new things on your channel. I am a collector for well over 35 years but have never actually submitted a book to be graded. But I have a lot of books I am considering for encapsulation and grading. I want to get in the game. Thanks Brother. Greatly appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to watch my video and ask me a question. I appreciate the questions. I’ve learned that even modern books can benefit from a press because they are not perfect. New books aren’t handled with kid gloves and can have minor defects and imperfections like wavy paper and non-color breaking bends. When selecting books to submit I look for these things but they also have to be mailed via the post when I send them to CGC. I would hate for a minor handling mishap to make a 9.8 a 9.2 or worse. It’s worth it to me to pay a little more money to have CCS (division of CGC) to press the book. CGC offers two kinds of press. A quick press is one that removes minor imperfections that could be found on a modern book. Older books may require a more expensive pressing. I can recall the name of this service but let’s call it the unQuick Press. This service is more extensive and may require the book to be pressed a few times to remove/correct all of the defects. Think spine roll..heavy creases...impact dents. Check out CGCs website for examples of what a press can do for a book. I know a lot of people use independent pressing services but I want to mail my books once-straight to CGC/CBCS. People have really strong opinions about pressing. Old school guys hate it. I think it’s a great service. Let me know if you have additional questions. Also, check out my lingo series where I talk about press, cleans, spine ticks and other defects that can affect a books value.

How would you differentiate the process if it is a silver age book? Estimate the range of grade possibilities and do the same Ebay sold evaluation based on a few months data since the book might not have sold as much as a modern 'hot' book?
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 6 жыл бұрын
I need to think more about it but off the top of my head the methodology still works. You still need to guesstimate the grade potentially comparing the raw book to other graded books that you can find online. This comparison may help triangulate the grade. Personally, I wouldn't rely solely on eBay sales because that represents only part of the market (versus gocollect, or GPA) but that's totally your call. And, to you point I would look back maybe 3 months to arrive at the average FMV. You may want to adjust/normalize the FMV based upon any crazy outliers (e.g., really low or extremely high sales).

Thanks for watching and for the sub. You can pre-screen for any grade but there is a 25 book min. if memory serves. When I first considered submitting a book I was only looking at the potential value of that book slabbed at a high grade. But there’s a couple that have not much value at all that I look at and I’m just thinking...dang, I’d like to see that encapsulated lol is that bad? Have you ever sent one in just because you wanted to?

I’ve sent in a lot of books to be graded because. That’s it. Because. Yes, there is a dollars and cents argument to be made about getting comics grade but there are other reason to do it as well. This hobby is meant to be enjoyed and it shouldn’t always be about money. Do what makes you happy bro. Here are two videos that you mind find helpful. It’s best to think of my videos are story arcs. I tend to address a topic from lots of different angles. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/naychbV637Cxo2w.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pa-jgbxy3MDMZqs.html Hit me up if you have any questions. IG is the best way. Agree totally. I sent in 8 older marvel/Curtis b/w comic mags to be graded. Deadly Hands, Creepy,Eerie, Vampire Tales etc etc. I thought I was a good grader but CGC goes into so much detail. I got hit a lot for foxing, finger bends, a few other things so yeah you need to really look through your books before you send them in.

Well I have a question for ya. I am getting back my first submission and I saw I got a 9.6 when I was hoping for a 9.8. But being my first try, I didn't clean or press or anything (new to this and submitted before I found your channel lol). The value difference between the grades is barely what it would take me to submit the book again, but I'm not sure I'll ever sell it. Is it worth it to resubmit a 9.6 for just that little bump? I know its personal opinion but I'm bummed I didn't get that 9.8 lol
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't. I technically have never re-submitted a book for re-grading. With that said, I have books in my collection that could benefit from a clean/press. It's just not worth it to me--especially if the dollar amounts between a 9.8 and 9.6 are small. And, if the book will stay in the PC. Hope this helps.

My method is simpler than yours. If I'm planning to sell a book, if the value of my conservative estimate of the book's final grade is $40 or more higher than what I could reasonably expect to get for it in the raw, it's worth doing. Good informative videos by the way.

But mostly thinking about their future condition... It's best I get them preserved. I haven't personally sent in any books for grading yet.. So I'm new at this.. It just sucks that I won't be able to ever open them up again and flip thru them if I choose.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I'll make you a deal. Send me those books. I'll hook you up with a Marvel Unlimited subscription for 2 years PLUS some cool reprints of those books. LOL. Seriously, if you're concerned about not being able to open the books--which I respect--you can always slab the books yourself so you have the option to open them. I think you can also purchase the microfiber that removes the harmful gases from preserved books. The self slabbing kits can be purchased from comicskin.com. You can always go with mylites or top loaders. Slabbing books isn't for everyone and I totally get that. Here are two other videos that I filmed on the topic: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pa-jgbxy3MDMZqs.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/naychbV637Cxo2w.html Whatever you decide, is the right option for you. Are lenticular covers worth CGCing? I've heard mixed opinions. I have several more lenticular covers for other Marvel Legacy titles 2. I know the 1st issues of famous runs are worth a lot. What's the opinion on the last issues of famous runs. (E.g. Amazing Spider-Man #801 (Dan Slott's last Spider-Man issue) or Incredible Hulk #635 (end of Greg Pak's run) or Saga of the Swamp Thing #64 (end of Alan Moore's epic run)? Sorry if I'm asking a lot

Hey Regie, Question: Have you ever resent in a graded Comic book because you didn't agree on the grade? or maybe you felt if it got pressed first the grade would have been higher. This is where I am now. LMK. Thanks
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 4 жыл бұрын
No, I've never done either. Grading is part art and science and to this end I try to employ science to minimize the artistic side. The first step is really a full inspection of the book so that I know what I'm sending. I try to be aware of defects and how that defect will impact the grade of the book. Once I have an understanding of this, I have the books cleaned and pressed being sent to CGC. With all of that said, I do have books in my collection that could benefit from being cleaned pressed and regraded but there is always time to do that. Put another way, I don't want to tie up more money in a book that I already have.

Why would eBay and PayPal fees be added? The seller typically pays the fees, correct. The buyer would incur fees if they pay via card versus a balance on hand. By the same token should you deduct eBay buck credits? At the end of the day, this video is designed to give people a starting place to determine what should and should not be graded. It can be as complex or as simple as one would like. Thoughts?

I really liked this video but the only error in your calculation, in my opinion, is the absence of being conservative with your grading. There is a chance that you may not get a 9.8 on these books, for one reason or another. Either you missed a defect on the book or something could happen during the handling process at CGC and they could accidentally damage it. Don't you think it would be wise to do your exact same analysis at a grade of 9.6, just to be safe?
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
Great observation. I think you should make whatever adjustments to the calculations that you feel should be made. I think people struggle with how to grade comics and I didn’t want to complicate matters even more.

I've been debating sending a PGX graded McFarlane autographed Spider-Man to CGC, but I'm so afraid that the 9.8 grade is going to drop to a 9.6 or a 9.4. It was really the first comment that I ever bought off eBay and I didn't really know much about PGX graded books.
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
It’s a tough call because the grade could drop and you will get a green label. Cgc does not verify signatures so you’ll get a green label versus yellow. The grade could drop but it’s hard to know for sure. Was the book pressed before it was graded by PGX? If not, a press and clean could help keep the grade high. If it was me, I’d leave the book in the PGX.

It will take 1-2 weeks before the books shows up in the system. You have to think about the number packages that CGC must get on a day. Everything single package has to be received, opened, recorded, manually entered into the system, placed on the vault, etc. It’s not a quick process especially with covid-19 blah blah blah. If you addressed it correctly, confirmed that it has been received at the PO Box, you are probably in great shape. This is your first shipment so I know those emotions. It will be fine. 👊🏾👍🏾
