I love my outboard hardware compressors, eqs, and mastering comps. And I still like the workflow that outboard hardware gives me. BUT STL Tones new Control Hub update just changed the game frankly...

Hey guys. This is a sponsored video. If I didn’t make it clear in the video I apologize. Since posting, it has had a paid promotion disclaimer. I labeled it with hashtag”ad” as well as a disclaimer in the description. I’ll make this more clear in future videos.

I'm not saying I'm better or your better necessarly than the engineers who put these chains together Now....I shot this out against using Nebula and Acustica Audio (Live Analog Sampled Plugins from "Industry Standard High End Analog Gear Units in High End Large Mastering Studios) Such as GML EQs, API, Sontac, Tube Tech, Sta, SSL ect....... Mixing with them Bus by Bus Then Using "this" control Hub bus by Bus...then running the Nebula through my analog gear for Summing, Analog glue and Analog Harmonic Distortion and just using Control Hub on the other Mix Results.... The Nebula/Acustica/Analog Mix...Blew this away.... This is good "Learning Tool for a Demo Mix" But....nothing can replace Professional High End Units to get a "Professional Master" The analog is always going to sound More Open, Weigher, Wider, Harmonically Seperated for buses, but more Glued and with the mix the vocals are always going to sit better in the Middle of the Mix but more upfront and Lush....you can only do this in Analog....Control Hub sounded Smeary and Flat........

Hey man, I really appreciate you making this video! The possibilities are endless with this technology, STL tones is really pioneering a new age of audio production and Engineering with this. One suggestion I might make, with the lack of disclaimer in the actual video, you may want to put it in the title that this is sponsored by STL tones or possibly edit the thumbnail so it's more upfront. Looking forward to more content from you!

Somewhat unrelated, but I notice you still have that Audioscape bus comp in your rack. I’m curious if you still plan to make a video on that, or if not, what you think of it. It’s a unit that I’m super curious about and wonder if it’s worth picking up. Would love your thoughts!

Yes I need to. It worked its way into my master chain to the point I don’t think about it. It’s just doing its thing. I love it. I’ll say this in the video too. But I notice the differences in the sides when weighed against the many plug-ins.

So question: how does adjusting the parameters in the plug-in sound compared to adjusting them on the hardware?
@RecordingStudioLoser
@RecordingStudioLoser 10 ай бұрын
So far in my experience, it’s a lot like the kemper. It takes a snapshot of everything where it’s at. And then you have parameters to push it around in certain directions.

You can never replace the effect of pushing actual voltage with a amethamatical representation of its "qualities". It's like the difference between math and nature. Sure, plants follow mathematical principles yet every individual isunique. Same thing with analog equipment: you're affecting electricity. Analog distortion always adds, digital distortion just drops data. You can drive an analog signal until it turns to noise but digital effects can't replicate that phenomena as it is an actual physical phenomena existing in space. It is electricity. The wave continues to oscillate faster and faster with a half-life infinitely. I mean... I've imagined creating a program to replicate that to make a digital guitar drive effect (it''s probably possible to replicate it somewhat).
@shaft9000
@shaft9000 10 ай бұрын
Hmmm, seems doubtful. Perhaps useful in a pinch for some color, but not a replacement for an entire unit? I'll contend that any half-decent engineer ~will~ reach for a comp based on it's timing and attack & release curves - basically, how it _moves_ - not just saturation character or 'vibe' when driven at a set (mind you, a _static)_ input gain. A lot of mixes don't need further saturating, either - especially in jazz, folk, orchestral and live recordings in any genre. I'm not against being proven wrong, by any means. Just being skeptical of the frontiers claimed here. Saying something to the effect of "i don't care how the compressor acts on dynamics, just how it saturates" sounds kinda like shill-sauce, because the alternative is just a poor understanding of what the basic tool is for. Not saying YOU "are", just that it comes across that way in this one video. You are obviously already equipped enough to make or have made significant progress. Peace, and cheers!
@RecordingStudioLoser
@RecordingStudioLoser 10 ай бұрын
I get it. And you should be skeptical from any sponsored video. In the flow of conversation I suppose I come off too nonchalant about it. I care about how it grabs. But in MOST cases I’m more thinking of the sonics of the comp and what that will do the source rather than how I want to compress it numbers wise. If that makes more sense. And yeah I agree some mixes need to be clean. Non of these are hard and fast rules. If anything I hate the argument that hardware is a barrier to entry. That’s why I liked this. It seems to me like it levels the playing field. Could be wrong. But that was my take seeing this in practice

The sentence; “if you updated the plugin to the latest version” says it all for me. I only use plugins for stuff that’s really a necessity but I can’t afford, like a LA2A or a 1176. For everything else I use hardware which I buy cheap 2nd hands because everybody is selling for going in the box. I can slowly upgrade my hardware for better units and sell what I don’t use anymore mostly for the same price I purchased it. I can’t sell plugins. Also because I have limited options with hardware I have to make decisions and find creative solutions. Less is more right? And it makes me mix faster. I don’t want to sound like another mix engineer, I want my own unique style and approach. If people don’t like my stuff there are other engineer’s they can go to, but to be fair, mixing is not my main income so I can be independent and choose to reject a project.

@@RecordingStudioLosercompared to other modeling and profiling competitors, the liquid profiling update for Kemper really shows the versatility of the Kemper Hardware, I think it's going to be a while before they actually make an updated version of the Kemper because of how they're able to consistently update and improve the unit without having to pay for any physical adjustments. I think that's what's going to separate the different hardware and software companies going forward

I haven’t cracked mine open. But this is from Gregory Scott saying there are. Either way, i’m not sure how to refer to these. Haven't plugins replaced outboard gear years ago? The only real reasons why many top mixers still use analog gear are workflow, nostalgia and prestige.
@RecordingStudioLoser
@RecordingStudioLoser 10 ай бұрын
I will say the Hardware VS software thing I think is stupid... And plugins do a killer job. If I find a plugin that does the same thing as hardware that I can still use creatively then theres no need for me to keep the hardware. I agree with you that some see prestige with it. BTW, I hope I dont push that narrative. Which is why I think a plug like this is cool. Its not a seperate plugin... its added functionality to their current plugin that Bridges that gap and the hurdles, at least sonically, (wheter you buy into that or not) are broken down.
