3 жыл бұрынWe're back with another incredible piece from the Portal series, here's "Want You Gone" totally reimagined in the style of Frank Sinatra's arrangement of "I've Got You Under my Skin" (originally arranged by the great Nelson Riddle), and sung by the amazing singer/trumpet player Benny Benack III.
It's a testament to great song writing when your lyrics and melody can function in an entirely different context like this, so huge thanks to Jonathan Coulton for this great piece of music!

Definitely took a while for me to concoct this! But that bass line from the original swung kinda reminded me of the bass clarinet line from "I've Got You Under My Skin" Sinatra so once I had that idea it just took off from there

Woah, I just came back to this video after a few years and Benny's "How did you get in my room" at 1:15 is I'm pretty sure a reference to how Sinatra greeted his crowds at the Las Vegas Sands whenever he started. You can hear him say it on his iconic album Sinatra at the Sands. Such a great detail!

The animation though. It just shows so much character and humour. For example: Imagine a highly complex machine, with great intelligence and intellect who has great homicidal tendencies, was just so *done* with you that they made a whole musical number about how they gave up on trying to kill you and just want’s you somewhere not their problem. Maybe I'm just the old guy -- never played Portal, never heard of Jonathan Coulton. My grandfather called Sinatra "Frankie Sinus" back in the 1940s. Nonetheless, I'm blown away by how this arranger and the 8-Bit Band channeled the Nelson Riddle swing and sound that made Sinatra so appealing. Clever work ! Satire, homage, clever re-interpretation all in one !!

I adore the drummer, he always gets so into it, I love how at 1:58 he appears to be acting along as though he's smacking test subjects with his drumsticks. The dude's got charisma for days, and that's saying something when you've got the singer in frame pouring liquid gold into your ears.

Dude, I just realized... They drew attention to the companion cube during "Oh, did you think I meant you?", so GLaDOS said goodbye to the cube there. And in the end, after Chell was kicked out, the companion cube also bade his farewell, so to speak. I loved this :D
