I think earlier scholars misunderstood the expression 'of the ground'. What we were taught was that Cain brought fruits that were rotten and had fallen on the ground. Meanwhile, the true meaning is that he brought fruits that germinated from the ground, or that the ground or earth produced.

And Abel, he also brought of the FIRSTLINGS( fresh, the best) Of his flock and of the FAT thereof. By this scripture, wisdom should simply tell us Abel gave God the best of his products, Cain did not bring the best that was why God was not pleased.
