No one is wearing safety gloves and still manual work is required. No automatic instruments for unscrewing the nut and bolt... Railway has to modernise for maintenance jobs of locomotive....

This is surely an easier way of dealing with a locked axle condition. However, would this work seamlessly given that axle's load is no more equally distributed between the remained axles? Doesn't this risk overheating the journal bearings or even stressing the track/infrastructure?

I would guess it is used just to limp it into the main shop where it is going to be properly fixed. So to just get it moving, even when with restrictions like limited speed or so... By the way the 30% extra weight is by far not that much of a loading on the other axles, as is the fact they effectively deleted all the suspension, the two working axles are holding the frame via hard steel lifting inserts, so any uneven spots and the dynamic loading will become not 30% bigger, but 3x bigger than normal at the same speed.

You have a valid point though but it has to be enforced by rule when its not followed by will. And for this it has to come top down. Coming here and complaining and mocking does not help. And throwing the country under the bus also does not make sense either. You want to make a change? Write to Ashwini vaishnav in his X or other handles, give the suggestion that safety has to be prioritized for railway workers. He is a smart chap and listens - so write there in his X or other handles instead of venting here.

No safety protocol seems to be present, neither in the form of any safety inspector or safety equipment. All caution seems to be out in the wind. Would like to know what is the rate of injuries of technical staff in the Indian railways. Is there anything called safety protocol present in terms of equipment, personal safety and so on. The use of mechanical tools is primitive, there is very little use of power tools. This is shameful for the Indian railways, and now the bullet train.

Having worked on breakdown (derailment ) team many years in UK I was quite impressed with this method of dealing with locked wheel set , we always used wheel skate , far more risky ie having to assemble it under wheels set . I would think using power tools would entail more risk but lifting gear "jacks ect " looked decent . I'm assuming they have stopped lines either side , but the lack of Hi viz is an unnecessary risk

They are reducing the axle load on the middle axle of each bogie, which will increase the axle load on the remaining two axles. This will make these Co-Co bogies act like Bo-Bo bogies, which will improve acceleration and maximum speed at the cost of adhesion and number of wagons hauled.

I suspect this is a 'Get-you-home' lash-up, to enable recovery and return to repair shop. I very much doubt the loco will return to service with the lash-up fitted, as they have placed travel-limiting blocks above the bogie end bearings to prevent excess load damaging the springs and brake-gear.

@@nlo114 Suspect the other wheel sets will be sat on the blocks once off the jacks so relying on bogie secondary suspension between bogie and body , then a very slow trip to maintenance depo . Neat way of doing this as we would have used a wheel skate and these are problematic over points ect due to small wheels

@@pmaitrasm Thought they were just lifting the middle locked wheel set so loco can be moved to maintenance facilities , we do similar by placing wheel skate under locked wheel skate . Loco would only be allowed to move short distance at very reduced speed with middle axle lifted as remaining wheels would be exceeding maximum axle weights

@@nounoufriend1442, You are right about locked wheel. However, I saw that all the axles were rotating. Not sure what happened. Removing two axles from six axles will be fine if the rails are heavy enough. Also, I wonder why they have provided the shackle link only for the middle axle.

Wearing of gloves is not necessary as the work is done on the periphery of the loco and no heavy part is being moved/lifted. Someone mentioned use of pneumatic tools, . That's not required as the work does not involve major fastening.

@@vara1499gloves should be mandatory, it’s about worker safety policy. Also power tools are required, workers can get repetitive strain injury. You should learn from western countries, about worker safety and repetitive strain injuries.
