The battle for the Donbas, the eastern region of Ukraine, has become a war of attrition. Small gains are celebrated by the Russians while Ukrainian troops lament the delays in Western military aid and civilians are forced to flee their homes. First Donetsk, Luhansk, then Severodonetsk and Lysychansk… The names have become daily fixtures on the news, as street by street the battles take place. France 24's Gwendolyne Debono travelled along the front line for this eyewitness report.

As a combat vet I recognize that look soldiers get after battle. Dilated eyes and battle fatigue. Salute

I’m a combat vet and I’m just to old and hurt from my previous military days and told the wife of this was 25 years ago I would of went especially with both my parents being Ukrainian I was born in Massachusetts. I did meet a kid who just left for Poland he joined the Ukrainian army and I couldn’t be more proud of that kid that’s selfless service n I wish him and all those fighting glory in the end

The world is grateful for these young men who are willing to stand in for those of us who cannot help. All we’ve been able to do is support financially the projects who purchase protective gear etc.
