You know what might be pretty cool, is a movie about a WW2 reenactment where one of the participants falls asleep and then is woken up by a sergeant, saying "Ok soldier, time to move out", and he finds somehow he's been transported back in time to the real WW2 Europe, where he has to rely on his reenactment training and skills for survival. .

As a Canadian, the trope the bugs me the most, is that Canadian ( and other Commonwealth ) military are NEVER mentioned. In the Longest Day , all the scenes with Kenneth Moore happened at Juno ( the Canadian landing site ), Not Sword Beach ( one of the British landing sites ). In Saving Private Ryan, they should have come across British / Commonwealth troops. In Dunkirk, Kenneth Branagh's character in real life was Canadian not British.

My grandpa was one of those regular soldiers doing the mundane tedium of war, but what's funny is that you actually maybe could make a movie out of his experience because as a jeep driver for a battalion that managed communications he kind of Forrest Gumped his way through WW2's greatest hits by virtue of driving important people to places or setting up their telephone lines or radio stations as needed and was adjacent to but almost never present for a lot of the biggest events, including marching into Berlin with the 82nd and 101st airborne divisions to set up communications for the Potsdam Conference. He was however in the Battle of the Bulge, being pushed back to the city of Namur and helping to hold a bridge.

My father was in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific Fleet. That’s why I’m fascinated by WWII.

I fulfilled a life-long dream by taking a day long tour of Normandy. My Dad was one of the guys who walked across Omaha beach a few days after the 6th. His battalion formed up, marched inland fought their way through the Bocage and into Belgium and into Germany. It was a bucket list item for me. By happy coincidence, I was there on June 4 and the re-enactors were in full bivoac and the roads around the beaches full of period accurate motorcycles and Willys jeeps. Everything came alive for me. I am sorry Dad didn't live to see it again. He always wanted to go, but admitted that all of his memories of Europe involved being shot at all the time. "Up from the Beach" 1965 was the best warmovie about Operation Overlord.

The Wardaddy Undercut is historically accurate, and was a popular cut for decades in Britain up to WW2. Was regulation for British Commandos, especially marines. Head had to be shaved up to the line of their Beret rim. Can easily see any US soldier adopting it. Was a common haircut in the German army too. I wouldnt go by portraits, which would have been taken on leave or away from duty, where they let their hair out.

I am lucky enough to possess a war journal diary from a combat engineer battalion during WWII. He wrote again and again about three things: Letters, food, and his quarters / lack thereof. Letters were the only way a soldier could connect with his loved ones back home, and were highly cherished. Food was one of the most looked forward to parts of the day, and sleep was just as important then as it is now. Having a roof over your head or a stove was the best thing for him.

I appreciate the fact that you look age appropriate and physically fit enough to portray a combat soldier. I used to do CW reenactments. First the good, the smell of blackpowder and the camaraderie around the campfire singing period songs with period instruments. Now the not-so-good, people overweight and too old and soldiers trying to look old with long grey beards,( most soldiers were very young) I understand why this is, most photographs were taken of veterans at reunions whom were older and not in good shape.and that is what they are basing their portrayals on. I also didn't like the lack of casualties ( also understandable because of the limited number of reenactors). But overall the comradery and the learning and teaching of history made it worthwhile. You should come to St. Louis Missouri. Ever year in the last weekend of April. (Except if it lands on easter weekend its the next one). There is a big WWII reenactment with American tanks and US half tracks and german half tracks and AA half tracks. Id love to meet you!

An excellent WWII film is "Come and See" released in 1985. It is set in Nazi occupied Belarus. I highly recommend this film to anyone who wants to learn what WWII was like for the majority of people who experienced it.

OMG. It's the perfect WW2 mash-up. My life is complete. Thank you! My dad was in the air corps and his unit fixed the planes after combat, getting them back into service; often they needed to remove the remains of the crew first. Dad was the supply sergeant; I wish I had thought to ask him more about it and find out what kind of wheeling and dealing he needed to do to keep things running and the men fed.

My grandpa was 79th infantry division cross of Lorraine, 314th infantry, he was a Tec 5 corporal in service company. I wish someone would do a video on the 314th. The little I learned from him was that service company resupplied the front line, guarded prisoners and headquarters. Also transported prisoners from what I understood.

I know Kelly's Heroes is considered fiction, but how about a review of that movie in terms of its level of tropeisms in relation to World War 2?

Wwii helped grow my patriotism and that is one of the biggest reasons i am facinated with wwii.

I think "The Himmelstoss" is perhaps one of the most (if not *the* most) used trope in war movies.

Ummm...these guy seem to have forgotten the incredible D-Day sequence in Sam Fuller's BIG RED ONE. Lee Marvin and Mark Hamill's portrayals are incredible. As is the entire film. Make sure to obtain the extended restored version, NOT the theatrical release.

I took my grandfather to see SPR in 1998. Let's just say that wasn't a good idea. My grandfather had several children after the war, and I was the only one he talked to about WW2. I wish I had been able to record it. He only talked about one incident and then just stopped, got up, and walked off into his room.

As a history guy I always thought re enacting was a bit lame but you’ve totally changed my opinion. There’s a lot more too it than just wanting to wear uniforms. 👍

For the War Daddy haircut: I think it was supposed to signify him giving himself a field haircut for the entire campaign and not trying to depict a common haircut during the war.

For me as a living historian I don't consider what I do as a weekend warrior thin like a lot of people do and for me it's more than just putting on a show and reciting historical facts, I consider it as a lifestyle. Cuz for me I'm taking on the life choice of portraying those who were either in my family or those who I've admired from afar and it is my job to not only do them justice but to do their friends, their families, and their comrades justice as well and not only that but to see things from their perspective and understand how their generation thought and felt then after all that inner work and historical research then I feel like I'm a part of that generation and I have been all along. If I don't do any of that then I'm not doing my job right.

i wouldnt call it a trope as such, but one thing that always irked me was the "Beverly hills teenager effect", meaning everyone is much older than the actual ppl they represent. Just look at SPR, not a single soldier under the age of 25, all of them are older guys , too old for frontline infantry...also Germans look like modern day skinheads or ironically ww2 soviet soldiers with shaven heads.

Great topic and uniform, but perhaps an old small paper Notebook next time for notes...(it does look better), but great clip. Another two WWII films I'd recommend and they are often overlooked/forgotten are: 'A Walk in the Sun' (1945) which shows a Platoon of U.S. Infantry landing at Salerno, Italy (set in 1943) but in a small scale within a Platoon storyline kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g8idh5qVxJPIXYU.html. Great for checking uniforms and equipment for 1943-44.
