I think that Spielberg wanted to give audiences a sense of what French citizens experienced when Hitler attacked in the spring of nineteen forty . Ten million people fled the advancing Germans who were unstoppable . The refugees clogged the highways and roads , blocking French army reinforcements from being able to counter attack or shore up places where the French lines had been broken through .
