Fun fact: the tripod noises were based on the Carnyx, a horn that the celts would play before battle to terrify their enemies. Something similar to the tripod sound is the last thing many real people ever heard.

I Was a Teenage TeenWolf Not really. How did this extremely advanced alien civilization have the knowledge to traverse the stars, but fail to account for the planet that they were invading bacterial history among many other obvious things? It’s almost as dumb as the aliens in signs not knowing that the earth was mostly water despite being able to clearly see that shit from space.

@@apricotmadness4850 No clue, really. But it's not so much they didn't know disease but rather they didn't know OUR diseases. It could also be that they lived in such a sterile environment that a sneeze could have killed them ( there is a condition in humans triggered by not being exposed to diseases and this building an immunity. Ironically, being removed from disease can also make you sick. It's why playing in dirt as a kid is encouraged to a degree.)

I highly recommend reading the book from the late 1800s. It's kind of neat to see what was considered technologically advanced. The book describes the tripods more like big cylinders with a lid that literally screws on with giant 2 foot long screws. The akiens themselves have massive eyes, tentacles, and a v shaped mouth. Most fan art I've seen makes them look like squid things with huge eyes and a beak looking mouth.

Both. Another great commentator pointed out that humans and any animal fear louder noises as it indicates a much larger creature. And humans are wired to afraid broader noise wave lenght; psychological warfare. Tripods also used the noise to find and signal eachother; like 'human here!' - 'War here!'

For the curious folk The noise it makes is a reference to the carnyx, an instrument used by the celts over 2000 years ago to scare their enemies in the battlefield. It was scary because of its unnatural tone, nothing on earth could produce it, and you could say it sounded alien right? There we go.

This sound is perfect. It's eldritch, terrifying and organic. There's something about it sounding non-technological that adds an extra layer of dread to it, like it has no practical application besides being a tool of intimidation. This low pitched horn evokes some kind of deep seated primal fear at the back of everyone's mind, like the aliens knew the exact functioning of our psychology that they could create a sound that by itself evokes terror.

Well... the sound could also be a form of communication between the tripods. You know... for ground units. We have seen, that they are fully organic, without any communication devices. And we have also seen, that all three of them, while being in the basement, left the basement after hearing one of those sounds.
