War Tourism in the Golan Heights: The War Next Door (Part 3)

In August, al Nusra Front jihadists took control of Syria’s side of the border crossing with Israel and kidnapped over 40 United Nations peacekeepers - who have since been released.
But al Nusra Front, an al Qaeda-affiliate, isn’t Israel’s only threat from Syria. President Bashar al-Assad’s military, in a possible effort to bait Israel into its civil war to shore up Arab sympathies, has been lobbing mortars across the border. Just a few weeks ago, the Israeli military shot down a Syrian plane flying over the Golan Heights - the first time it has done so since the 1980s.
In part three of a five-part series, VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky visits the top tourist destination in Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. Up here, tourists and UN observers stand side by side as they enjoy the great vantage of volcanic hills, sprawling vineyards, and Syria's civil war.

I don't believe tourists come there mainly to watch the war, but for its beautyful nature and historical sites. I've been there myself.

This is nothing new, for thousands of years civilians have flocked to battles happening nearby to either watch or cheer their side on. During the First Battle of Bull Run thousands of civilians from Washington turned up with their families to picnic and watch what was supposed to be an easy Union victory... Until the Union forces lost, then it turned into massed panic. Such overt war tourism waned when the range of weapons and the size of battlefields became too large to watch in safety, however the advent of massed media and the internet has made all the gory horrors of war viewable from the comfort of your homes. Only in rare cases such as this where a war is happening right across a border where neither side would dare to cross can civilians spectate the fighting in person and in relative safety.

Since Simon has an Israeli citizenship it's easy for VICE to send him there, sadly no one in Israel's ministry of interior revoked his citizenship as of yet, heck according to several reports it was the Israeli diplomatic mission to Moscow that got him off the hook when he got snatched while covering Ukraine. Simon is one of many Russians that immigrated to Israel after the fall of the USSR got the immigration package then packed his shit and moved the Canada the first chance he got since from the mid 90's to the mid 2000's(and even now to some extent) several countries including Israel got preferential treatment for immigration requests into Canada. Heck with the exception of commonwealth nations, the US and refugee status holders an Israeli citizenship is still probably one of the easiest ways of getting into the bloody paw...

CeoLogJM This is not the first time he made this little joke, such as the russian roulet (even though it was in ukraine) he made ridiculous jokes that makes no sense, and conclusions (when he was away from everyone in the car) that makes no sense. Not only that but its not funny, and this is a very serious topic. When the situation is ok to make a joke (such as the end) he acts very mature and asks serious questions, without a joke anywhere.

Why are people so pissed off at people looking at this? ITS A WAR, ITS FASCINATING. They are not looking at some Syrian kid from 2 feet away and hoping that something will happen. They go there because, this is probably something they will never see again. They will probably never see a real war in front of them, so of course its interesting. Dave Stonehill northern ireland is roughly 60% to 40% its not as if the catholic irish people only make up single digit percentages. It is the same thing it is a disputed region and those are the only two i can think off right now please let me know if you know of any other

wabblum99 Regardless of the breakdown, Northern Ireland has a much larger population than the Golan Heights. I think that makes it a more difficult situation to resolve. The Golan Heights with its tiny population is easy to resolve. Israel should annex The Golan Heights and make it part of Israel. When I move to Israel, I shall be advocating just that.

Didn't like the fact that he put the Fijian peacekeepers on the spot whose main duty was to preserve peace. The main reason why the UN has been there was to make sure that there was peace between Israel and Syria. The only reason why the Fijian soldiers got captured was because they were outnumbered 6 to 1 . They didn't want to coz conflicts between the Syrian rebels and the UN detachment that already had a good relationship with them. Which the UNs main goal was to preserve peace and not engage in civil warfare which was already happening in Syria. The journalist was hypocritical in calling them out not knowing that they were faraway from home in observing protocols and peace between two countries. C'mon your better then this stop being biased and focusing on one side of the issue when your supposed to be focsuing on both side. The Fijians have been in the middle east for decades sacrificing their lives to make sure that there is peace in the region. Not forgetting that they have the largest detachment out there.
