Quite funny how elf and troll was pretty much synonymous 15k+ years before the dark portal. Trolls hiding from direct sunlight become dark(spear) trolls, those near the maelstrom/well of eternity become night elves, swapping the Loa for emerald dream nature pantheon, highborne focused more on arcane magic instead, who after the great sundering (spoilers) either sink into the deep sea and become old gods' Naga, or hide in Suramar as the Nightborne leeching off their nightwell, or return to the sunlight as high elves leeching off their sunwell (aka Blood Elves after Scourge destroys that magic source for a time) fighting off occasional forest trolls until joining the Naga with Illidan, swearing vengeance on the Lich King (much like general Sylvanas did when forming the Forsaken).
