Original lyrics and English translation:
Grá
Gamle Grå…
Eg hugsar ringen før den brotna
Songen din rørar djupt i meg
Som taumar rakt frå minna dreg
Eg finn ikkje ord, dei er for meg gøymd
Men det er noko gamalt, det er noko gløymd
Eg hugsar når du jaga fritt
Eg hugsar når me jaga saman
Eg hugsar oss, før vegen skildes
Eg hugsar ringen før den brotna
Alltid var på meg, og eg på deg
Alltid var på deg, og du på meg
Berre spring til mine skogar
Berre jag i mine fjell
Før din flokk til mine dalar
Lat oss laga ringen heil
Eg skal syngje deg vegen heil
Eg skal syngje heimat heil
English translation:
Grey
Old Grey…
I recall the ring before it broke…
Your song stirs something deep within
Like chords pulling straight from memory
I can’t find the words, they still remain veiled
Yet I know it is old, I know that it’s forgotten
I remember when you roamed freely
I remember when we roamed together
I remember us before our paths got separated
I remember the ring before it broke
Always wary about you, and you about me
Always wary about me, and I about you
You may run to my forests
Roam freely in my mountains
Lead your pack to my valleys
Let us restore the ring
I shall sing you safe on your way
I shall sing you safely home

As a wolf therian and one who identifies very close to nature and the original circle of life, i agree with this theory. The fact that the internet and everything has ripped us apart from what we truly are inside. We are animals, we are one with the core of the earth. Most have seemed to forget that. Bt there are eye openers like us that will pass on our knowledge through generations to come. That is our job. ❤️

This is the first time that I have listened to a song until it brought me to tears. This song brings out a part of me that feels so utterly trapped by today's world. Trapped by the constant grind. Trapped by the hoards of uncaring people. Trapped by the endless lines of cars moving by, unaware, unknowing, uncaring, anonymous. Trapped by the demands and expectations of family, government, and society. It feels like a wolf caught in a cage, desperately gnawing and clawing at the bars, despite broken claws, shattered teeth, and bleeding gums. It wants out. It *needs* to be free. *I NEED TO BE FREE.*

I’ve been struggling with religion throughout my life, always felt a strong connection to paganism. It’s what my forefathers believed, this song has been stuck in my head for a few days, and yesterday on Wednesday ( I’ve learned is Odin’s day) I had a dream, and from researching and talking to several people who helped interpret it, I realized Odin finally answered my pleas and he showed me Yggdrasil. And today I finally am at peace with myself and my views. Thank you Wardruna for giving me that. And Thank you Odin.

You need not be spiritually inclined to appreciate the craftsmanship of mysticism within this song. Perhaps the old gods call out to your soul and ancestry, knit so deeply into your bones you can't help but feel a chill as they're called upon. These don't have to be your gods. They are your ancestor's gods. :)

Only after watching the video a couple of times did I realise that THE LADY SINGING *IS* THE WOLF. The lady never shares the screen with the wolf. But replaces it in scenes. Hence the howling chants. This is so magical the hidden meaning. The Woman's singing starts only when the WOLF enters the screen. I Just noticed that . When I try to sing like her I feel the wolf in me come out with those howls. It's true.

My ancestors’ spirits have awoken inside me when I began to listen to Wardruna. We, Rus(Russian), are tightly connected to Scandinavia. Our Gods are alike and so are spirits. Wardruna brings an important bit in our society that lacks memory of the great culture, which ones was dominate in the whole Europe. It gladdens me that many people start to realize the importance of spiritual freedom. But also it is sad that people in Scandinavia seem to forgot their own culture, which is quite powerful and underestimated. I hope with my whole heart that one day Scandinavia will remember that their ancestors had an extraordinary, astonishing and exiting cultural values! Skål brothers and sisters!

Some thoughts. The song is named Grá - Grey - and an central instrument is the percussion bones. It's possible this has a intended connection. In old Norwegian culture the wolf has been called by the eufenism Grábein - Greyleg. The word bein means both leg and bone. Maybe the instrument was chosen because of this? Nice song.
@CDPF5
@CDPF5 4 жыл бұрын
Grey is also a word some people use in reference to Odin - Old Grey, Grey Beard (Hárbarðr), so on. The lyrics suggest, imo, that we're losing touch with the teachings he gave us, we're disconnected with the knowledge he sacrificed for. We're destroying ourselves and the world we live on - we broke the ring... and yet, our ancestors are still alive, they still live through us, we still remember things we are not supposed to remember... all we need to do is to reconnect with our true path.

I'm going to see these guys in concert. I can't wait. This song is so... immersive. I was blown away by it even before I knew what the words meant, but now that I know... wow. And Lindy has inspired my 8yo to take up singing lessons as she constantly asks to play this one on repeat in the car. What a masterful song.
