'Hel', in Norse mythology, originally the name of the world of the dead; it later came to mean the goddess of death. Hel was one of the children of the trickster god Loki, and her kingdom was said to lie downward and northward. It was called Niflheim, or the World of Darkness, and appears to have been divided into several sections, one of which was Náströnd, the shore of corpses. There stood a castle facing north; it was filled with the venom of serpents, in which murderers, adulterers, and perjurers suffered torment, while the dragon Nidhogg sucked the blood from their bodies. Mention is made in an early poem of the nine worlds of Niflheim. It was said that those who fell in battle did not go to Hel but to the god Odin, in Valhalla, the hall of the slain.
......................................................................................
'Gjöll' is one of the eleven rivers of 'Hel', in Norse mythology, Gjöll is the river that flows closest to the gate of underworld and it's spanned by a bridge (Gjallarbrú), which must be crossed in order to reach 'Hel'. According to Gylfaginning. It is described as a covered bridge, "thatched with glittering gold", which was crossed by 'Hermód' during his quest to retrieve 'Baldr' from the land of the dead. The river is said to be freezing cold and have knives flowing through it.
Hermód was sent to retrieve the fallen god from the land of the dead. When 'Hermód' arrived at the bridge he was challenged by the giant maiden Módgud who demanded that he state his name and business before allowing him to pass.

Lyrics:
Helvegen
Kven skal synge meg
i daudsvevna slynge meg
når eg helvegen går
og dei spora eg trår
er kalde så kalde, så kalde
Eg songane søkte
Eg songane sende
då den djupaste brunni
gav meg dråpar så ramme
av Valfaders pant
Alt veit eg Odin
kvar du auge løynde
Kven skal synge meg
i daudsvevna slynge meg
når eg helvegen går
og dei spora eg trår
er kalde så kalde
Årle ell i dagars hell
deyr sjalfr it sama,
en orðstírr
deyr aldregi,
hveim er sér góðan getr.
Deyr fé,
deyja frændr,
deyr sjalfr it sama,
ek veit einn,
at aldrei deyr:
dómr um dauðan hvern."
...........................................................................
Translated Lyrics:
The Way To Hel (Helvegen)
"Who shall sing me
In(to) death-sleep sling me
When I walk the way of Hel
And the tracks I tread are cold, so cold
I sought the songs
I sent the songs
When the deepest well
Gave me drops so harsh
From Valfaders pledge
All know I Odin, where you (your) eye hid
Early or in the days end, still knows the raven if I fall
When you stand at the gate of Hel
And when you have to tear free
I will/shall follow you
Across Gjallarbru with my song / Past the bridge of Gjöll with my song
You become free from the bonds that binds you!
You are free from the bonds that bound you!"
"Cattle die, kinsmen die,
you yourself soon must die;
but there is one thing that never dies,
the fair fame that one has earned.
"Cattle die, kinsmen die,
you yourself soon must die;
but there is one thing that never dies,
the doom on each one dead."
- (Hàvamàl 76-77)

It is important to distinguish between the Old Norse word "Hel" and the Christian word "Hell/Hölle" Two totally different entities, places or things, not the like at all, not even comparable I would say. The christian monks confused us and re-wrote the tales. Hel is not a torture chamber for the bad people as Hell is said to be. Hel is the place of afterlife for the ordinary human, Valhall being the place of afterlife of the brave Warrior, killed in battle. Burned to ashes or put into the earth as the whole, it made no difference, for it was thought that there was a spirit parted from the body after death. Helvegen means literarly "The way to Hel" Excuse me for my bad spelling, I never raided. I stayed in Sweden the whole time, so I never learned inglish properly :)
@SvartSyn333

Hel is a cold dark place like it would be the worst place seen from the view of folks knowing mainly harsh cold winters. Hell is a place unbearably hot seen as the worst place to be from the point of view of a culture used to hot climate. It's the same basically, just from two different point of views due to cultural and geographical differences.

3 years late, but.. As one of those people, I can answer. Song is mythical and magical in my cultural heritage, as are words. Norse are very similar to indigenous american cultures in the use of song not just culturally but spiritually and 'magically.' Second, to be sung across the rainbow bridge as you pass from this life holds a deep meaning no different to other cultures; the transition from Earthly pain to heavenly glory. Judea-Christian monotheism considers this being ressurected in a paradise on earth or in heaven, being 'held in god's memory' or elevating to the 'heavenly plane.' The rainbow bridge leads to the world of the gods, or the heavens. Third, the lines of being set free from the chains that bound me, repeated and strengthened with two tellings, feels powerfully magical in my spirit and emotions. Letting go to move on cleanly is difficult and vital for all cultures, so to have your loved ones singing (magical) at the ceremony of you departure from this world would help you to move on if you could hear it; and helps your family release the burden of grief even though you can't hear them. It helps give them closure and permission to move on to set you free from the chains that bind you. Lastly, the Havamal is one of the few surviving sacred texts of the Northmen, the Vikings, and is a collection of "Sayings of the High-one" meaning Odin. You could think of it as a book of poems of songs (again, magical words and song and writing) from god to impart wisdom to the people. The passage that all things must die, but the memory of a man (or his fame) lives eternally, that one's deeds outlast their short human life, serves as both a hopeful beacon for those yet to die, as well as motivation to live a good life and be remembered fondly. I believe the last part is something you touched on in your comment; "makes you want to live an epic life." The motivation to live well includes within it a desire for those you leave behind to think of your life as epic.

Although with that its form day one been a very parted one in its unity. It's has many factions. I've always had fights going into school and coming home from. I'm now a 55 yr old man. Army veteran and a proud desendend from the town of Lovov. A well known Viking settlement and felt this blood surge through me for over 30 yrs. In this country many people speak of their heritage as being strong. Then I think back to mine. The place of my father's birth Lovov and of how lucky I am to come from a place with such a historic alliance between the Slavic and Norse peoples. How proud I am to be cut of this cloth. @@Mugdorna In the case of Rome and Greece, there were a lot of written sources 'from that time' that were then kept in libraries throughout the mediteranian, (mostly by islamic scholars and knowledge-keepers) which was then 'rediscovered' in the reneissance. Norse culture had no written sources from its' own time, but since Scandinavia was christened much later than other cultures, their pre-christian exploits were well-remembered and taken note of by the christians of Europe who had their new and fancy Latin. Many details of norse mythology were then written down by christian scholars after the fact as well, while it was still remembered vocally. Old Anglo-Saxon or gallic culture (as examples) didn't get stuff writen down due to the circumstances of their passing away. It was forgotten, and unlike the case of norse and greek mythology, there is too little material with which to have a 'rediscovery' and utilization in the first place. We may know an anglo-saxon battlecry, but not know what it means! Meanwhile, we all know what "To Valhalla" means, and so the Norwegian armed forces makes use of it before their regular patrol in the Afghan countryside. One needs certain amount of puzzle-pieces to make a whole picture, otherwise you just have individual pieces or clumps surrounded by nothing with which to provide context and 'wholeness'. Basically, many European cultures don't celebrate and honour their old pre-christian cultures with the main reason being they wouldn't know what to celebrate in the first place.

In our family history documents, it is said that Bjorn traded along the Volga sometimes and stayed with Jarl Ketil on the occasion that he was nearby. This was before he became a raider and before there was the Great Heathen Army that invaded England. Europe is very connected, by marriages and travelers. We're all related to each other as one large family. Really all peoples are related to each other.

MsRandomPro interesting. It actually breaks mine. While I will never renounce my Christianity, my roots are undeniably Norse. The first stanza is heartbreaking. "Who shall sing me into the death-sleep sling me?" It's a loss of the old ways as our Viking heritage was to sing to our loved ones as they died and moved on to Helheim, Valhalla or Folkvang. He laments that since the old ways have gone, that no one will sing him to the other side.

When I hear this song I think of a battlefield at dusk, after the battle, with crows circling in the air. First one soul rises, and starts to sing while beating a drum, and then gradually other souls rise as well, to join the march - the march to the underworld, to Hel. As they arrive at their destination and start to descend into the underworld the music also starts to fade. The lead singer turns around one last time, muses about what remains of a man's life, to finally descend himself

That is because icelandic and germanic are the old language of Scandinavia. I mean, if you see very old swedish words, they acctually spells and are told in the same way some icelandic words are. With that I mean swedish literature from 12th century. Which also got danish words and even norweigan words and spellings in it. I guess swedish was born from both Denmark, Norway and Iceland. Same as danish and norwegian was born from Iceland, and even Finland got some of the words from icelandic/germanic but got their domination from the karelian language from Russia. So that's why you even can see some finnish words in icelandic as well. Or well a few closely related words I can say. I do not know if they means the same thing though. But that is the conclusion I have from the language tree in Scandinavia. And if I am totally fucked up in my head and got it ALL wrong, then I am happy to being told so.

Cool you have an open mind. It's amazing what we can grow to like and appreciate if only we choose to allow ourselves to do so. In a world, where we are all bombarded with others opinions on how we should be, feel, and think, were still able to think for ourselves and be free from the slavery of the mind.
