Any idea what dialect of Norwegian is this? I am intermediate level in Modern Norwegian, but these words have different endings, so it must be an oIder version of Norwegian, or maybe a dialect...

​@@FrozenMermaid666Most Wardruna's songs are sung (for the most part) in Høgnorsk - an older version of Nynorsk. It is quite different from Bokmål, which is what I assume you are learning. Note that these are all standard (written) forms of the Norwegian language, not dialects.

TMR To complicate things there are the old nynorsk, and the later "bokmålifisert" nynorsk, much of the old alternative words/spellings has long since been obfuscated by the conformist/socialist/fascist schooling system.

Hane is rooster. Hen is høne. Hane=male/høne=female So, if it had been hens in English, it would be høner gjekk i enga, not hanar.

The female general term (for animals) is honor/honer which correspomds to hens. The male term is hanar which then describes roosters. And it is all about the roosters making their specific male sound ( att gala) in sunrise (rismål). It is a very intracultural thing that the symbol for waking up is the rooster ... not the hen. And "gjeck i ringen" means walked (not went) in the moving pattern the sun has during the summer close to polar circle. Up in NNE and the almost a full circle and setting in NNW (or not at all north of the poar circle)

modern hens come from southern asia, but that was many thousands of years ago, people brought modern hens to europe from southern asia several thousand years before that, when there were very few humans in northern europe, long before germanic languages like this even existed
