On this episode of Steam Culture, Brent answers a fan's questions on steam burns.
Why does a steam burn hurt more than a hot water burn? When steam hits your cool skin it changes phases from a gas to a liquid, and a massive amount of energy is released on to your skin. So be careful when you reach across that boiling pot of pasta!
Watch the video to learn more about the energy required to change steam from a gas to a liquid.
Key terms:
Latent Heat of Vaporization
Phase change
Energy
Steam
Gas to liquid change
Energy changes
Steam burn
Hot water burn

yes. i burned both of my hands yesterday thanks to a faulty radiator. my hands were in pretty rough shape immediately after it happened, but after a doctor's visit i should be good pretty soon.

Great vid. Poured water on a dying fire to put it out tn. The water evaporated immediately and the steam scorched both my hands. In a lot of pain! Held them under cold water for 2 hours but still hard to sleep. Wish me luck!

Fuuuuuk... How close were your hands to the fire? Steam got me too😤 taking the lid off while trying not to drop a glass plate cooked three of my fingers in like 3 seconds, that shit hurt for like 4 or 5 hours🤬

Thanks for this informative video. I know from experience that people don't hold the same level of concern for steam and steam burns when working with hot liquids, and this is a great way to explain the dangers. Great presentation, great video!

Thanks for the comment! Yeah steam can sometimes be disregarded in terms of safety when in reality it can be much more dangerous. Superheated Steam, steam heated past 212 degrees F, under high pressures can become deadly as it is invisible but carries incredible amount of energy.

Sir, I have few doubts - 1)At 100°C If latent heat(supplied from stove) is being used up in breaking the intermolecular forces(like weak Vander waal force ,H-bond ,London force etc ) among water molecules (for phase change : water to steam) then how can steam possess this latent heat and later on release it upon condensation on our skin (isn't it already utilised in performing work , that is weakening intermolecular forces among water molecules )? 2)if there is latent heat in steam/water- vapors then why doesn't it increase temperature of these vapours. Thanks in advance 😊

Cooking a pot of chicken and fajita rice I go to slide the lid off not thinking nothing of it don't want to drop the bowl when the steam first hits my hand and wouldn't you know that steam cooked three of my fingers in like 3 seconds here it is 4 days later and I have to pop blisters peeling skin with pink meat showing underneath the loose saggy skin SMH it burned for like 4 hours after the running water, now I know why

Hey,not sure if you'll reply me but does the water have energy before that?
@wareboilers
@wareboilers 7 жыл бұрын
What exactly do you mean? The energy that steam has comes from the heat that that was used to flash it into steam. At that point the steam still have the heat energy and will release it once it condenses. Maybe that might explain enough? Thanks for the question!
@javiertan9646

wareboilers what I meant was like so now the total thermal energy of the steam consists of the latent heat of fusion of the water and the latent heat of vapourisation?

I have explained this to my boyfriend but he is STILL trying to argue me down on the concept of steam having to be PRESSURIZED in order to cause more damage. LOL He thinks that if you place your hand over a boiling pot of water that the steam would be less damaging than if you placed your hand into the boiling water itself. SMH 🤣🤣🤣 I QUIT!! LOL
