Hey Doug! This sounds great and I'm excited to see where it goes! Two things, warband terminology should be changed to something like "Posse" and the enhanced coal needs to be called Hellcoal or Hellstone to help with the theme. I'd say 5 to 10 models per Posse ;) .

Doug this is awesome! I’m so psyched that you’re going to be recording this! All Wargames are derivative of one another. The simple fact is that there are a limited amount of resources to draw chance from. The intrigue comes from one or two minor tweaks that create massive consequences. You’re on the right track! I love this!

Steampunk, Check. Deck of Card instead of dice, Check. Card suits initiating special effects, Check. Variable Damage, Check. Target Numbers for completing tests, Check. Warmachine style focus allocation, Check. Alternate Activation? Hex based game board vs measuring in inches Doug, it sounds like our brains on the same rabbit trail here. I have been pulling together concept that I think would make a good wargame and you named almost all of them. Do you need a crunchy math person to help you get rules figured out? You've got my number.

This is awesome bro! Love the card and chip aspect. One thing that comes to mind with the chips though, is how there's always the chance of losing them in a game of poker. Perhaps there could be punishments or actions that result in an opponent being able to "steal" some for their own gain and use.

This sounds a lot like Deadlands, which is one of my favorite RPG/CCG/etc settings out there. Weird West is a fun space to play in.

This sounds really cool! 👍👍 I love the idea of using cards and chips, sounds very distinctive and really ties the flavour in! First thing I think of is how you are sometimes obligated to place a minimum bet whether or not you would like to participate in a round of betting.. it sometimes leads to quite out of character behaviour or really unexpected luck! Definitely could be a way to introduce some extra pressure and could be a cute way to force an opponent onto the back foot sometimes 👍

I’m stoked to see this come to fruition and I think it’s awesome that you’re sharing the process with the community :) My favorite things so far are that it’s western-esq and than the game system supports that narrative with cards and betting. I’m very into this idea!

this seems like a very cool idea. i like the idea with cards and poker chips. If its possible i think it will be such a cool idea to flesh that out more with the gambling mechanic. it might be interesting idea to have it where a chip can pay for a redraw from the deck or pay a chip before hand to raise the stake of a draw ie. drawing a heart gives you a extra bonus but if you draw a spade it gives you a worse negative affect. think of this as a high risk high reward scenario.

Since you mentioned the concept of gambling with the poker chip actions, I thought there could be a chance of additional actions to fail. basically for each token above two, you have to flip the coin (or do another test) to see if the model can actually use the token. Another concept might be, that models with less than 2 actions are in a passive/defensive state and get a slight defense bonus.

You should definitely give Malifaux a try, if anything just to get a feel for how it works, it's a solid game and has an active online community.

The cards for randomness is useful, especially if you want it to play a bit differently. A few years ago (2016ish) I made a game that creates a unique deck for each player based on their attributes. There were X number of Critical Failures, Failures, Successes, and Critical Successes that changed as the player progressed. Sadly, I didn't do it on tiers of numbers but for each number instead. The players that helped test it enjoyed it as it was different than always rolling dice and had a scaled difficulty based on how good the characters became. Just a thought based on my experience. The game sounds pretty good so far!

But there is a rule that I dont get at all. Could you help and explain it? I'm getting mixed answers all over the net.

Action Economy Tokens (poker chips): Two on average per model sounds good. With the minimums and maximums say 0-3 each model, but all tokens must be issued out. If the model has zero tokens then it could be given a status of "Exhausted" as it cannot do anything, and hence it takes a [damage method] more damage since it cannot properly defend itself. Board size: maybe make it scalable from 24"x24" to 36"x36" based on warband points/size. The more minis you add to the board, the larger it will need to be, and the inverse is true. Having 6-10 minis total at a 28mm scale on a 36"x36" is just too much real estate to avoid each other, and more than 10 on a 24"x24" is too crowded at times, especially with larger base sizes.
