The potential conflict between India and Pakistan stands at a precipice of alarming complexity, as the two nuclear-armed neighbours navigate a tangled web of historical tensions, territorial disputes, and geopolitical ambitions, and with India's rapidly evolving military capabilities and strategic partnerships, the landscape of South Asian defence dynamics is shifting. The theoretical pitfalls of a confrontation between these nations would have far-reaching implications, not just for the subcontinent, but for the global order. On the panel this week:
- Chris Clary (Uni of Albany)
- Arzan Tarapore (CISC)
- Christine Fair (Georgetown)

Why the hell would we as indians want to invade zombieland? I'm satisfied with the current percentage of zomies here. Won't want to jeopardize the development of nation by increasing their percentage.

You can't talk about Indian procurement without mentioning 3 (disjointed) decades of tech denial and sanctions. Christine Faire is an South Asian expert, she should have mentioned this.

T-90s are actually pretty good for the Himalayan cold. The Indian Army managed to get one on top of Rezang La during the Galwan crisis. So Armored Strike Corp in the Himalayas is very much possible. Depsang Plains is Tank territory.

Are there any lessons to be drawn from the Arab-Israeli War of 1973, where the tank battles took place in the Sinai Peninsula? Those Soviet-supplied Sagger ATGMs made the IDF Tanks turn upside down. China has sophisticated anti-tank weapons which can wreak havoc on Indian MBTs.

@@syedadeelhussain2691while there can be various lessons drawn from those tank battles , what makes the situation different is that most Indian tanks are customised or Jerry rigged to ensure that they can face both fronts : Chinese and Pakistani.

@@beluga9596 Most of the Indian tanks lack night optical vision. Also, the performance of the Russian MBTs in the Ukraine war will surely have some policy lessons for the Indian Army.

@@syedadeelhussain2691 that's very outdated info. The Indian T-90 are equipped with Thales sights. The same one used on Challengers.

I was thinking that he meant more along the lines that the Himalayas arent a kind of terrain in which MBTs can manuver easily in and not that T-90s were particuarly unsuited to it or anything.

The best way to surprise pakistan is an amphibious assualt via sea. First launch the feint in punjab and rajashtan. Once forces are drawn away. Launch amphibious assualt via the sea.

I disagree with Christine's assessment regarding diversity of arms suppliers. This is one of those directional right, fundamentally wrong statements. So sourcing and integrating various arms supplier is simply an issue of capital costs rather than logistics. The Armed forces in India do have a logistics problem but that has more to do with lack of good infrastructure rather than arms supplier. The closest supply base for the Indian Army in Ladakh is Leh. It takes at least 9 hours of driving to get to the front to Depsang. The Chinese have their supply bases much closer and on better all season motorable roads (~5-6 hours). The Indian supply lines are closed for about 4-5 months a year. This is the logistics challenge Indian Armed forces faces.

@@bungeegum9837 oh no of course we are and we love one another very much. You know except the fact Pakistan keeps funding terrorists all over South Asia. India keeps on claiming all of South Asia for themselves pissing off everyone and having a religious and ethnic war with nearly half of its population forgetting it’s liberal constitution which stitches the country together. Bangladesh hating Pakistan for the ethnic cleansing in 1971 and hate India and Indian people for claiming Bangladesh belongs to India as some kind of neo colonial fantasy. Srilanka and Nepal hates India for India’s role in their civil war and for Indian neo colonial fantasy of claiming their country as part of India. And they hate India so much that they are willing to sell their country to China rather than to cooperate with India. So yea very tolerant and loving towards each other! 😍

As an indian i think Chritine fair has understood how indias stratigic mind works for india its niebhourhood i.e afganistan, pakistan, nepal, bhutan, Bangladesh , sri lanka , maldives or china is the place where it seeks to use its military to defend stratigic objectives and if u look throughout indian history even largest of largest indian empires never attacked or expanded out of indian subcontinent Only once in 4000 years in 1100 ce an indian army from south indian chola kingdom went to attack and conqure indonesia But this stratigic way of thinking is foolish and naive cause it dont allow india to have deep alliances that can help defend it against forieng threat is it any surprise that india ( by extension indian subcontinent) is the most invaded country in the world !

Around 13 minutes: will someone please take pity on this erudite gentleman and explain to him that “ has went” does not exist in English grammar: GO, WENT, GONE: He goes to school every day. He went to school yesterday. He has gone to school every day this week. If he has the intellectual capacity to learn big, impressive words such as “fungible” and “alacrity” then surely he is capable of learning the difference between the simple past, and the present perfect tenses.

India lost all the wars. That's why its always begging USA, IMF or China for money. India was divided into two countries in the war of 1971 and its economy has been lagging ever since. In contrast Pakistan, which won all the wars, has become a services exporter to the world and successfully developed sophisticated pharmaceuticals and automobile industries. Pakistan's economy is slowly but steadily growing, foreign reserves have crossed USD 500 Billion and FDI is booming. And you sir, are a scholar.
