I served on Vendetta too, late '70s. I reckon the Darings handled a rough sea better than the DDGs I served on later. Great ships!

@@NoName-ds5uq Ops room is full of gear, and he leaves most of it out. I know this is for the "average person", so he keeps it general; but showing one display (the SPA 50 air display) and saying "that's the radar" (multiple radar displays in ops and all can show all 3 search radars) is pretty misleading. And he doesn't mention the Fwd gun system console (other one is aft); which controls main armament and therefore a primary piece of gear. Once he gets to the gunbay, bit more informative and correct; the Chief gunbuster knows his gear. Shame they didn't have an ex S rate to do the same for ops. Good to see Vampire again though. Been to sea in Vampire and Vendetta.

I know for a fact you can also say that about tank crews and aircrew, such as my grandfather who was a waist gunner on a B-17. He would fill my young head with his war stories, and those of his friends. Hell because he was a trained mechanic for the bird he explained to me in great detail about how she flew, before I entered grade school I knew the deference between a radial engine and an in-line and there strengths and weaknesses! (Also OMG nerdgasm moment, I got a reply from The Challenger! :D)

+Andrew Schembri cool my grand dad didnt talk much about war ( he joint the viet minh since he was 15 and fight the france(whom try to recolonized us after ww2 and america support them ) then he fought agiant the american during vietnam war ( but at that time he had been train from military school and become a officer and work in some map room in hanoi ( lucky if he go to the south agiant he might die many vietnamese people die during vietnam war) he never talk about his fighting memory during the time he fight the france in area near by saigon he only talk about what they eat during that time and how bad the condition to live in jungle and about time he work in the general staff ( something about map ) and that all and he never talk much about war time ( later i find out many people dont wan to talk much or remember much about fighting time cause they might had lose friend and bad memories ) most of war stor i hear is from my grandmother/mother about the american bombing on hanoi during vietnam war and how they hide under bungker with other people and not sure if they gona wake up after go to sleep in the bungker + talk about some unlucky guy that didnt get in the bungker intime and get hit by a bomb and his head flew over 100 meter and land next to the bungker door

Same I love the maritime museum. Whenever I traveled for work to Sydney I stayed just up the road in Pyrmont so would make a point to visit every time. I learned I could never be a submariner!

Everything, really. They were the navy's work horse, generally speaking. Originally the idea was derived from torpedo boats which were designed as fast vessels used to counter enemy battleships... E.g. in the battle of Jutland, destroyer torpedo attacks were successfully deployed by the German fleet to keep the British battleships at bay. During WW2 destroyers (and lighter corvettes) were used as convoy escorts, to hunt down submarines and provide AA fire support. Destroyers also might be used as mine laying vessels. Or simply as part of a battleship centered task force, doing reconnaissance work and covering their supporting cruisers. By all means, rather ask, what didn't destroyers do, because those ships were versatile and all over the theatre of naval war

NovaMan 350 Destroyers and frigates are both support vessels for a battle group that carry out many jobs, however destroyers were historically larger, faster, and more heavily armed. These days the biggest difference is that frigates have mostly an anti-submarine role, but are more general purpose ships. Destroyers have an anti-aircraft role that includes radar and missiles aimed at longer distance aerial attack. In older times destroyers tended to be very fast compared to frigates but current destroyers and frigates have similar speeds. In summary: in older times destroyers were very fast assets, generally protecting larger, more powerful ships. Today that has evolved into air warfare ships with very sophisticated radar and missiles. They still protect bigger ships. It is their role that separates them from frigates. Destroyers tend to be more expensive than frigates so navies have more frigates, and only the navies of wealthier nations have modern destroyers.

For a ship that was almost exclusively deployed with the Australian or Royal Navy South East Asian operations it makes sense given the climate.

I was on the sister ship Vendetta and did the Vietnam deployment. We had the open bridge and it was not enclosed till the ‘73 refit. They were the best sea keeping ships at that time. Best looking as well.
