I prefer battleships and heavy cruisers but a good destroyer is worth it's weight in gold and I practice all the time fighting them with big guns. being able to take a hit or two doesn't lessen my fear of them at all..... I watch good DD's take out 3 or 4 ships ships quite often.

Ahhh yess this happened to me once, I was a battleship fighting against a destroyer from a far range, the destroyer will still able to get the torps to hit me and when I was about to sink, I shot a huge volley of shells into the smoke cloud that he was hiding in and sunk him too

The same think happened to me with a full health battleship witch I used the Derzki and sank it

What about playing ring around the rosy with a fast battleship in a 2-gun Mutsuki? Surely I get points for gun kills?

Per tonnage; there has never been a more heavily armed type of ship in history. They sacrifice a lot for firepower though, namely; protection.

***** I find this unlikely, I don't think any DD in the game has a detection range that low even with flags or commander skills. The lowest doesn't even go below 5.5 km. What's likely happened is that you detected it much further away than that, but you were so fixated with the gun sniper view that you didn't notice until 4km or when the torpedo warning went off. It's quite common, I've lost count of how many cruiser players I've killed from super close range even though my detection warning flashed up a couple of km before I fired my torps at them. Awareness of your surroundings is vital.

***** they were probably in a smoke cover but was not graphically seen.. i play as DD, and i was detected at 8 km even though my concelement level is 6.1 km.. maybe a plane,recon was somewhere..it happens.. all in all its fair and fun.. love DDs.. also love Cruisers.. lately playing with Tenryu and Kuma..awesome firepower and torps..

PhilosopherGaming The problem with your statement is that I was in the sea map, alone in the corner and the damn DD came into my sight 4km from me AFTER I launched the plane and then it was already too late because the torpedoes were spotted like right before they were going to hit me, so the detection system is broke because my Murmansk could detect these fuckers at 8 - 10km just fine before patch 4.0

It should be. Once again, as with the Fubuki and Kagero; the Shimakaze was the best destroyer in the world when introduced. It also took 300 USN fighter planes half a day to sink it, if memory serves me correctly. Far too difficult to manufacture that late in the war however-with it's record setting 400psi boilers, so they only completed one.

@@Sen8tor Realistically; [for cruisers and up] AP should be used against everything except a destroyer, aircraft carrier or merchant ship. For a DD, your AP shouldn't penetrate anything, as 120mm's too light, considering all cruisers are armoured against 6 inch and battleships 12 inchs and up. With that said, only vital parts of any ship receive said armour, so I would load AP for use against cruisers, as if you get close enough you should be able to punch through.

Ante Brkic thats your problem right there. you're sailing american destroyers. japanese destroyers are way better. with american you wanna hide behind islands or get into fights with other destroyers or cruisers where there are hardly any enemies around

@@martijnheil8825 The Kagero should be the best destroyer in the world for it's tier. It was basically the perfect destroyer to meet Japan's need, the end of the evolution of the line that began with the Fubuki [which itself, was the best destroyer in the world when introduced].

Hammer and anvil. It was the most widely used medieval tactic for a reason; because it worked. Basically, one enemy/group distracts them, while a second [you] sneaks up close for the killing blow. I use it all the time. Just sank three battleships in one game with a light cruiser a couple of days ago. Don't fire until you're noticed.

The guns are too weak to compensate the torpedo advantage of their Japanese counterparts, especially at tier 2. Umikaze has almost as much firepower as Sampson, but with 8km torpedos.

FLUX2226 The low tier jpn DD-guns turn extremy slow. The speed is comparable with Battleships... it's insane. Wickes 18s for 180° turn - Wakatake 45s for 180°. The Kawachi and the South Carolina have a, surprise, 45s 180° gun turning speed. So the japanse Tier 3 DD has literally BB gun rotation. Absolutly useless.

Both have advantages. USN has guns, IJN has torpedoes.
