Erebus is such a great character, and this short story from his POV is the ultimate ‘haters gonna hate.’ I love how completely uninterested he is in justifying or explaining himself, and he does it all with a smug grin on his face. He’s all like, “Oh, you wanted to know my real name and secret tragic backstory that explains and justifies everything I’ve done? F*** you, that’s what.” And no matter how much you hate him, Erebus is right about at least one thing: he’s been 100% committed to his cause from the start, and he doesn't give a single flying f*** about what anybody thinks of him-while having no illusions about any of it.

Relistening to this, and have just realised what an advantage it is to Erebus that his true name is not known (or even suspected). True names have enormous significance in sorcery and daemonology... No doubt many attempts to curse him have failed for this reason over the millenia!

Third listen, and I'm greatly tickled by his attitude to Kor Phaeron. Knowing how Erebus actually feels about him would surely drive the humourless old monster apoplectic with rage... so Erebus will certainly have ensured that Kor Phaeron finds out. :)

As someone who recently read The Sublime Object of Ideology, I find his conversion fascinating. Erebus becomes a believer by pretending to be a believer. It’s an essentially Faustian operation.

You are assuming he didn't plan the whole thing out . Erebus is a master of schemes but in the domain of manipulating fates he is nothing compared to the Emperor. Infact only tzeentch can square up to him in this sector . The whole thing was planned and executed well in my opinion.
