There's a famous saying by French poet Paul Valéry which gets misattributed to various people: "Un ouvrage n’est jamais achevé, mais abandonné" (An artwork is never truly completed, but abandoned) which feels relevant here

That is what got me started in painting minis in the first place. I'm still not all that great, but I did indeed do a better job than the source that inspired me to start out of sheer spite.

This part is my favorite part of crafting. Every creative eventually hits a spot where their ethereal thoughts of creativity meet the desperation of shame and guilt. Sometimes it makes you pause and linger. But man, when those two things collide in just right right way, you end up going though this stage of "Alright, it's time to get shit done." Welcome to your new era of completing. Cross that finish line as many times as you can Trent.

I love to imagine an Emperor like this would go from stationary to active in about 12-15 hours where everything starts rotating and activating and when it looks like it ran warm for multiple hours on end it suddenly gives a war siren to signal it starting to move. That would naritively be awesome

I love the flow of your videos and vlogs. They go from you sharing your hobby mindset with us to the creation process which has an air of “this could be done at a more opportune time but we’re doing it anyway” to some really reflective shots of you at work from an evocative angle + lighting set up (eg 10:45 ).

The late Robert L. Moore posited the idea of Grandiosity, a force within us all that propels us towards greatness. It can be malignant, yes, when not properly reconciled with reality. But it's also the font of creative drive and ambition. The dragon inside us that tells us "we can do great things, we're unstoppable". The dragon Grandiosity is both our arrogance and our will to greatness. We must know both how to recognize and moderate the dragon's influence, and ride its energies to accomplish our goals.

I know exactly what you mean when you talk about shutting off your brain when fixing and finishing models. In concept art there is the design phase, which requires a lot of thinking and can be really difficult, and there is the rendering phase where you can shut your brain off and render out the lighting, materials, and forms. The former can be literal agony and make you want to give up, and the latter can be incredibly cathartic and relaxing. Great video, sir. Thank you for sharing your art.

Remember, art is never finished, it is simply abandoned. You have to reach a point where you just put it down and say it is done otherwise you will be working on it forever.

Finishing things is a great morale boost and if you finish things and make it a common practice, you get better and faster at finishing things. Now, there is always a project that needs improvement but you really know what needs to get done with it when you see it "finished". Then you can edit it and finish it for good. And if that problem part doesn't jump out at you it's really helpful to say "well, at least it's done now."

@@Miscast that's a lot of paint. That goo is called Millibutter, got it from Marco Frisoni. I felt so called out by the bit of arrogance driving you on projects. Which is why it pisses me off to no end that often the paint jobs of mine I find most impactful were just slapping paint on or experimenting rather than refined techniques I've given great care to. And at the end of the day, my friends give the same reaction to my work since they have no frame of reference so it's just as much about getting out of my head as it is getting it done.
