Buying your first Warm Audio preamp and Which I would choose to buy are questions that I get often. In today's video I hope to explain my thought process as to why I would Buy the Warm Audio TB12 preamp or The WA73 and in which case I would choose one or the other. The Warm Audio TB12 is a replication of the Classic API 312 circuitry and the WA73 is modeled after the Neve 1073. With either the WA73 or the TB12 you can't go wrong in whichever is purchased but you can approach your purchase with a more informed decision based on the music you primarily do.

Great presentation as always! I have the WA73-EQ with the WA76 compressor - both are really good units, which I bought after watching these videos of yours Warren Henry - people have commented that my recordings have the "Neve sound" - that's good enough for me ;-)

I went through this a while back and my choice was the WA73-EQ. I like the TB12 but wanted the classic 73 design everyone raves about. I record in home studio primarily guitar (and some bass) for rock, fusion, neoclassical instrumental music. I don't do vocals and only have dynamic mics (SM57 and e609) that I toss on a cab. I really like the sound of the WA73, pretty interesting tone tweaking with the EQ, its pleasing to my ear even with the EQ bypassed. I can't compare to the Neve 1073 but on its own, the WA73 sounds great. I love the WA hardware, also have the WA76 and EQP-WA...good stuff. I'm just starting to play around with 500 series so I may grab a TB12 in 500 form

Warren do you use the insert in the back of the tone beast at all ? I have one. I love the clean api sound. I like older music, I thought I would use the vintage setting on everything. But I think the cleaner full sound on the TB is just great. Especially for the money. Been throwing around the idea of getting a 73 as well. But honestly I mostly do instrumental music. Mainly drum kit guitar and bass. Sometimes synth stuff. Maybe just stick with the beast for now ? I’d love to mess with a 73 though I’ve never used one personally.

Nice one. How much difference is there between the 1073 and the 1173? TB offers that colour too with 1173 right, and so does WA-12 for that matter. A bit confusing for me!
@WarrenHenry
@WarrenHenry 4 жыл бұрын
Melody Chest when comparing the two it best to use the API vs Neve benchmark. The reason is the transformers used in both units are different in terms of the color and they impart. The X731 is the op amp used in the WA12. It’s API 2520 pin specific.That’s true, It can all be confusing if you are unfamiliar with the differences between an API and Neve console. Hi Warren, I have been producing Electronic music but since I got started producing. I have never produced a song with Vocals cause I cant get the tight lows of my voice with my interface built in Preamps. Which is Roland Octa-Capture's Preamps. I am happy with the conversion and sound quality of my Roland Octa-Capture but The Preamps are clean that I cant get the lows, mid and High frequencies harmonics cause simply Octa-Capture's Preamps does not generate those harmonics. I have bought GAP Pre 73 MKII in the past and it was good with mid frequencies to be forward in the mix. But still lacks the tight lows of my voice. So for Electronic Dance music I should buy Warm Audio WA73 then right?

You could try the Tone Beast and WA251 combo (considering the genre) and even the WA14. On another note, I tell this story a lot in my livestreams. I was doing a late night session many years ago, very sleepy (it was 2am). When the engineer put up a vintage 47 for the vocal session everybody in the control room responded "What mic is that" point is we knew EXACTLY what we wanted to hear and the 47 delivered. Though, I would recommend them in stereo, pairs. And you could always cascade one into the other in series. And you will be surprised at what you will get. So, while I might have the originals. I've been keeping my eyes on,, WARM Audio products. They do very nice recreations. It appears to me. But only my opinion. As a highly skilled technician/engineer. And I think knockoffs are just fine. Will it sound exactly like its original counterparts? Probably not exactly but close. Close enough. You only need to be, close enough. 4 time major music award nominee RemyRAD

Don't get the wa73 thinking (I want the neve sound). Take the wa73 for what it is and it does a lot, I promise you. Let's be real here, you don't really need expensive equipment to make great music, hell I mixed and mastered for rappers/rock music and jazz on a HP zbook (still going strong) and don't have any issues. Warren Henry not my experience with Warm. My WA412 has a finicky channel, they offered to fix it for a flat $75 fee plus the cost of shipping it to Texas. I was never offered a swap out on the unit, though I wish they did. The fact that they only have a year warranty means they don’t really stand behind their product. I had my unit for 18 months and it started to have problems. So I’ll probably getting rid of it at some point and will avoid Warm gear in the future.

@@marin4311 it maybe for you but from the research they use lower grade components mostly assembled in China hense why warm audio stuff is so cheap. It's like they are selling a unit with premium grade transformers solder to mostly Chinese built parts.
