Hopefully, this video will help explain the difference between warm flat roof construction and cold flat roof construction. This video shows detailed drawings on how a warm flat roof is constructed. I link to two other videos one on cold flat roof construction and one that's an in-depth comparison between cold and warm flat roofs also showing thermal imaging of poorly performing insulated flat roofs. Animation program used was sketch up with lots of section cuts.
You can also view more information on warm flat roofs on my website

Nice clear videos. The way you describe every bit even down to what each material is called is very helpful especially to people not in the trade and trying to understand what the trades people are talking about. A lot of videos over looking the very basics so keep doing what you’re doing! I personally found this video very helpful.

Yes I have noted this on some of the older roofs, and the heat loss of the fixings is taken into account when designing a roof, now we use thermally broken fixings giving a better U value

Excellent I love you exactly my point of view, how manufactures can say that placing a soft insulation onto joist with a 50mm bearing with a 6mm ply on the top works is beyond me, I have planed a video on this as I have some new flat roofs with such a buildup and asphalt on top that has settled and cracked as the hole thing has moved under the weight.

Big Thank You for the brilliant videos - Your huge effort and time to put those tutorials together are greatly appreciated. A couple of Qs if I may please 1. Considering that the warm roof has no ventilation (like the cold one), what happens with the humidity which travels up? Condensation around colder areas (windows)? 2. In addition to the insulation of a warm roof - is there any benefit if the space between the joists gets filled with more insulation? Would this not provide better insulation?

Hi Steve, thank you for explaining warm roofing. I have a log cabin with a very simple sloping roof: joists with decking, which is covered with one layer of roof felting with chipping (the one that comes in a roll). I used bitumen roof felt adhesive between the felt and the decking plus felting nails. No vapour barrier, I am afraid. I have done this 5 years ago and it is still sound, however it is very cold in winter. I want to improve the insulation without going inside the log cabin and was thinking fixing a layer of Kingspan on the existing roof, possibly without making holes on the still OK felt roof underneath by using some sort of fixative. On top of the Kingspan I will lay 50 mm polystyrene sheets (1m x 1.5 m each) that come with felt backing and this will complete the roof. I would love to know your opinion on this plan and your suggestions would be very welcome indeed. Thank you.

If its a timber decking we will normally screw the insulation down using thermally broken fixings. If we are overlaying an old roof such as an asphalt roof then we will glue down the insulation to the roof

Hi Steve Love the channel find it very interesting and informative. Do you know if a warm roof is vented in between the Joists is this going to cause a dew point on top of the plasterboard as the warm air meets the cold air in between the Joists. Any information would be appreciated. Regards

Wow, bean and block is a good construction the insulation is probably just to bring up the insulation properties of the roof and not for sound, however every it will be offing some sound insulation.

Because the decking is kept warn you wont get any condensation around the timbers. Its very important to stop any cold bridging fix the insulation tightly.

Hi Steve, thanks for your videos, I've found them very helpful, maybe you can help with a question? I've have had a Warm flat roof installed, as a dormer in a loft conversion, with a EPDM roof covering, however we have been having really loud banging noises coming from the flat roof at night, have you come across this before? The builder is looking at options to resolve, he has tried removing the soffit with a view to putting in a vented soffit if it stops the banging, this seem to have been reduced , however I'm unsure if it's due to the vents or the drop in temperature, though some bangs are still occurring. If vents do fix this, I'm assume this will no longer be a true warm roof, could this lead to future problems or is this acceptable?

This is so interesting, I've had the same problem on my flat warm torchdown roof... Every now and then around 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. (I guess when the building heats and cools) there is a bumping sound (like something like a pine cone fell on the roof).

Very good question, but easily answered if you think about the vapour being trapped in the roof where does it come from? It comes from the room below so there's vapour in the room below. How comes that isn't a problem and the answer is because there are no cold spots for it to condense on this is the same in a warm roof. The insulation keeps the lower decking warm and therefore there is nowhere for the moisture that may get in there to condense.

I did a warm roof on my garage,the original deck boards were in good condition so i left them down, i put on the insulation followed by OSB3 boards and covered it with a fibreglass roof coating.because of the length of the screws i used to fasten down the OSB they protruded through the original decking,when we had some frost last week i noticed that the heat had travelled up the screws and melted the frost at the screw heads resulting in little dots all over the roof where the screws are.

A great video & something of a revelation. The flat roof above my property doubles as a main walkway to/from a large block of flats. As such, footsteps can be heard passing overhead 24/7. The builder tells me that a bison block & beam floor was installed, with a warm roof (with 100mm of Celotex) floating on top. He didn't mention anything specific to sound insulation, though. Can he mean that the Celotex doubled as actual soundproofing, or is there no real correlation between the two?

Hi Steve, Is the subdeck always required? Our builders are planning on placing the insulation directly on the roof joists without a subdeck and then placing the OSB on top of the insulation. I was under the impression it needed osb on the subdeck too, but can't actually find out why.

hello steve and thanks for the video. We are building a houseboat and soon its time to build the roof. its going to be flat and most probaly a warm roof. we would like to use it as deck and spend time on it, so we need a material that is waterproof but at the same time its pleasent to be on (so not a membrane ot something like this). i would like to make a fiber glass and epoxy (or 2 components resin alternatives) roof. i imagine it to be a bit like the deck of a boat. i dont know if it makes sense because i dont know if a little bit of vapour pass through the vapour barrier then its not capable to get out anymore and creates mold. i would use an as good as possible vapour barrier such as alutrix 600 as i learned on this channel . it would be like this from inside to outside: --plywood -vapour barrier -insultation (-plywood maybe or directly the fiber glass on the insulation) -fiberglass and epoxy i would appreciate your opinion. does this idea make any sense? if not what other material would you suggest instead? thanks a lot in advance greetings from berlin

I'm doing an extension and I'm looking to use a warm roof like the one you have here. I would like to add a overhang, do you have any videos that demonstrate this or is it a matter of simply extending the rafters beyond the building structure? The top of the extension will be used as a balcony with added railing. Can I simply add a more firm surface over the warm day and add railing? Well that's suffice?

Hi Steve, great video! The best video I've seen on warm flat roofs! I have a 50s modern house with a newer addition. This was re-roofed a few years ago, converting it to a warm flat roof with an air space between the ceiling and insulation. However, the roof extends out over the front porch where the warmer air space is exposed to cold outside air. The result is sweating inside the air space and dripping onto the porch at times during the year. Can I stuff insulation through the end of the overhang to the point where the roof meets the outside wall? Shouldn't that stop the sweating?

Warm roofs don't have ventilation so the area between the joist is warm the same as the room below, the warm are will also have the same moister content as the air in the room, the timbers and the bottom of the decking like that temperature and that amount of moister ( around 19c and humidity of around 45%) above the decking is vapour barrier helping to stop a lot of the moist air from rising above that the insulation keeps the decking warm. .........look at next post

Hi Steve, Great videos thanks, I work for the NHS so roofing is new to me but this is my understanding. I am planning an extension 4.8m wide by 3.8m going out. The architect has applied for 2.7m at eaves going to max of 3.3m high. I would also like to put in a 3m by 1.5m roof lantern in for extra light. From the excellent info you've given, I fancy a warm roof but worried I wont have the height however you mentioned using CLS 6 x 3 joists 18mm OSB, 120mm Insulation, 18mm OSB to stop stressing the insulation, a high SD value green vapour barrier and then foil, going up 150mm to the roof lantern and the roof lantern is 530mm high so I'm hoping I will be just under 4m as apparently that is the highest point for top of roof lantern? Is that about right? and will the CLS 6 x 3 joists support the weight of the lantern as the CLS 6 x 3's seem to be a maximum length of 4.8m? Thank you, Clive.

You're welcome to send me details and I can help you more but realistically you need all this worked out by an engineer I can't do that for you it's not part of my skill set size of Timber's and stress is an engineers job as regards warm roof cold roof always do a warm roof drop the roof detail down slightly if you have to. The height difference between a true warm roof and a true cold roof is so minimal I don't understand why people keep choosing Cold roofs

Also, may I ask, if warm air passes through the insulation and condenses on the underside of a cold roof construction (hence the ventilation)..why doesn't this happen with a warm roof? ...ie, warm air passes through the insulation and hits the coldness of the deck covering. Is this because there is no air gap and the two materials are flush to each other?

Hi Stephen, I was considering using a weather resistant T&G chipboard directly over the joists and the OSB3 T&G above the insulation. The chipboard in Wickes is a heck of a lot cheaper that OSB3 T&G and it is 18 mm. Could there be problems with this? Also, in order to reduce height, as this is not a building in constant use, I would use only 25 mm of Celotex. Is 25 mm as good as not having any insulation. I am putting the OSB3 T&G above because I may use rubber and wish to walk on it, or I may go GRP or something else but want to walk on it for maintenance, place things such as a small solar panel from Maplin etc.

Best thing I can say is contact S and D timber in Kenton Harrow, get all the materials there at unbeliever prices. For a new flat roof, you wont to be using a minimum of 100mm flat roof insulation with a good continuous vapour control layer under it. Don't use any insulation that has silver foil on both sides always use a separate vaper control layer and tissue faced insulation fixed with thermally broken fixings. You can email me for a list of suppliers, however, I ask for a donation to charity for the info www.justgiving.com/fundraising/roofing?newPage=True

Thanks Steve, Ive watched most of your videos now and will be specifying a warm roof for my upcoming renovation, I am undecided whether to board on top of insulation also, just in case I want to access adjoining wall for painting etc. if so I am uncertain of fixings through top deck through to joists how is this done?. Also if laying insulation direct to joists how do you complete the vapour control layer properly as you are laying vapour control sheet over joists not deck board?

The vapour barrier we use on all of our warm flat roofs is foil and tar on a role laid out over a sub decking to form a continues layer, if screws are used to fix down other layers penetrations tar-up and self seal however now the trend is to glue down everything.

Its an interesting part of law but I’m not aloud to give you a specification as I don’t have PI insurance, however the best vapour barriers on the market are felt laid with bitumen we On new flat roofs we like to use a self adhesive bitumen based vapour barrier rather than a polythene one its more expensive but we don’t like young heat on roofs then we have no chance of dating the roof on fire!

Well, that is a very good question and theoretically no because you have got a good favour Beria down below and they'll be no vapour or moisture in the roof buildup. However, in my own personal view as Belton braces, theoretically you could form a cold roof over the warm roof, so that if there was any vapour that got into the roof buildup it could get out that's a real good solid build up then but obviously cost lots of money and takes up more. +Steve Roofer Ok Steve - Finally going through with this project. After much review of videos on the subject (mostly yours - Thanks) I have a 1915 low slope flat roof with (brick) parapets on 3 sides (open on lower side). I've decided to tear off the 1/2" - 2" multi-layer mess - down to the deck boards. I did a 1' x 1' 'biopsy' at the top parapet edge and the decking boards/planks look ok so far. Also, looks like they used felt over the decking - so hopefully tear-off will go as well as it can go. I'm going to be using (2) 2 1/2" staggered polyiso layers and a 1/2" high density polyiso on top (for walking) - all covered with 60mil EPDM. All of the polyiso is 'fiber-glass' faced on both sides. (Hunter Panels). The polyIso will create a R30.7 barrier. Since I have to tear out the ceilings inside anyway, I'll probably be adding a heavy layer of blown in cellulose around the perimeter to help avoid condensation at the brick wall underneath - and, as I understand, cellulose can hold and dissipate small amounts of temporary moisture level peaks. My only question (i hope) is the vapor barrier (or air barrier?) between the decking and the polyiso. Do I really want a water trap underneath the polyiso ? I'm a bit wary of capturing trace amounts of moisture from above and pooling them at the deck board level. I've read that the layered polyiso will mitigate most upward moving moisture ? Yet I see the moisture barrier used often ? Anyway to make this a simpler proposition and alleviate my concerns ? Thanks for all your help and the great videos and Sketchup models.

The VCL gos on the decking under the insulation, any moisture now under the VCL is in the room below and away from any cold spots or thermal bridging and therefor not a problem.

No not successfully if you took the ceiling down and looked up the joists are in the way. if you put some sort of plastic over the joists and across the insulation you have locked he joists outside of the VCL and that's not a good thing to do. However, it's probably better than doing nothing if you have a problem. Its all down to cost

No the weight bearing of the insulation over joist spaced at 400mm is quite a lot, any how what we alway d is to place a board over first "the first decking" now you are really spreading he weight. The buildup is still called a lightweight construction. If you talk to any structural engineer about this he is normally not concerned. A good engineer will over design the structural elements of a flat roof to taking into consideration the weight of 3 or 400mm of snow.

Hello Steve, I got my roof done nearly 5 years ago. I assume it is a cold roof because roofers put only plywood and fatra membrane and then fibreglass. I am quite sure there is no insulation. I have problem with condensation beacuse there is no proper ventilaion. Is it possible to get it done on existing roof ? For example ventilation mushrooms on the top and in facias ? Or do I need a new roof ? I cut out piece of plasterboard and checked what is happening inside. The wooden boards are cold and wet... I hired a very well know company from Wales (Newport)with good reputation and reviews. I have 20 years guarantee. I am with contact with them but need and expert opinion as well. the property was build in 60’s I did have no knowledge back then about roofs. Did they do the roof incorectly ?

For the cold roof, why don't you use foil faced insulation (insulation with vapor barrier facing down, similar to wall with batt insulation with vapor barrier facing the warm side). This way you can eliminate the roof venting space.

There is not a roof insulation on the market that has a build in VCL vapour control layer. There is roof insulation that has silver foil on it that the manufacturer's when arsked will say that you can use as a VCL but its not there to do that. A vapour control layer should be continues if you use sheet insulation how will you make it continues when you can't get to the side thats down against the ceiling.?

Hi, I have just had this type of roof added to a loft dormer. However, when I drop out the spots to paint the ceiling there was a very strong draught coming down the holes. So if this is a warm roof, is this supposed to be the case? I doubt it as the heat from the room will go through the plasterboard to the joist area and be carried away by the wind. So the insulation material above that is not doing anything? Could this be because the soffit is not sealed properly or something? Coupled with this, there are draughts behind the walls too that come out of plug sockets unless they are packed out. So again, when it is windy we have cold walls. Have you any experience on these issues or any advice you can give? Thanks.

+Brighton Squash Club Warm or cold roof you shouldn't have drafts. with a warm roof you should be able to remove the ceiling and live with the timbers exposed as the space between them is supposed to be the same temp as the room below "a warm space" Yes we come across this problem all the time and yes insulation to the soffits is one of the problems.

Some manufacturers of insulation suggest that you can put the soft insulation directly over the joists that are spaced at 400mm however we find that this makes the roof bounce and is not that good . We place 18mm T+G OSB over the joists then we put the VCL then the Insuation Then more 18mm OSB then screw the thing togther using thermaly broken fixings then add the flat roof waterproofing materials.

Hi there, I have a concrete flat roof. (yes concrete) 4-6 inch pour, held up by steel plates and steel beams. my late father put it in. there is some unfinished space he couldn't finish, so the ceiling is unfinished from below. the roofing is done. Actually done quiet well. Looks like some Rubber roof of some kind, followed by a dimple mat with filter fabric, (air gap) then a layer of paver stones. The stones should block all the UV making the roof last forever (ideally). unrelated But I thought you would find interesting. Question for you though. since the room below it this roof was never finished do should I keep it vented, (Cold roof) and lay insulation the ceiling tracks under it, or spray foam the top of the concrete roof? looks like my dad had provisions to keep it vented. but not too late to change. do you have a video to suggest to watch? I'm starting too look at all your videos. Thanks. :)

Is it OK to have a second layer of decking between the top of the insulation and below the felt? Or is there a risk of that timber rotting because it's between the vapour control layer and the felt? I understand it's likely unnecessary but it has been laid already in a new build and I'm wondering if I need to take it up
@SteveRoofer
@SteveRoofer 4 жыл бұрын
New information suggests that there should not be a second deck on a warm roof. You are quite correct, the second deck is above the vapour control barrier and if vapour was to collect it could rot (interstitial condensation). Everything below the Vapour Control Layer (VCL) is internal, and is therefore subject to internal temperatures, with no risk of interstitial condensation and no need for ventilation. Above the VCL in the sandwich of insulation and roof membrane, there is a risk of interstitial condensation, this risk is reduced further by having a roofing membrane that has a lesser, or equal, resistance to vapour. If you start with a VCL that is of poor quality, don't fit it correctly, don't seal all the joints and don't seal it to the perimeter, then puncture it with fixings, its vapour resistance will be dramatically reduced. Start with a VCL that is of high specification and fix it correctly, and you should end up with an excellent VCL that also acts as an Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL), and should be equal to or above vapour resistance of the chosen roof membrane. The vapour permeability of most roofing materials on the market is hidden deep down in their specifications, almost impossible to find. I have never had a roof design given to me that has taken the above into consideration when specifying materials to be used on a flat roof. Always use the best VCL at the bottom, make sure that all materials used above are vapour 'open' (can breathe) and don't use foil-faced insulation in your roof buildup.

@@SteveRoofer Thanks Steve that's very helpful. The vapour control layer is also already laid but the ceiling below hasn't been slabbed yet. Any benefit to putting another VCL above the slab and below the joists leaving an air gap there (or filling it with insulation) or does just potentially lead to the same problem for the lower deck layer?

You have to look at things like this all materials will allow the vaper to bass though. Some have better quality than others We use stronger AVCL air vapour control layers in the correct place thus forming a barrier, moisture that penetrates though can then work its way out as thematically the materials above are more open and moisture below is below and inside the property thus in harmony with the internal environment

Hi Steve , In a warm Roof do you need vented soffit ? . Does it cause problems if it is installed in a Warm Roof ?? Cheers
@SteveRoofer
@SteveRoofer 8 жыл бұрын
No venting in a warm roof and no venting needed in soffits. Make sure that there is no moment of air from the outside to the roof void of a warm roof. Think of it like this internal spaces and external spaces Internal spaces such as bedroom living-rooms are only vented by people opening doors and windows, we heat internal spaces. External spaces such as garden sheds garages and loft areas are normally very well vented because of gaps and we are not bothered because we don't heat them. So with a warm roof construction everything under the insulation is internal and therefore we don't vent moisture levels will be the same as the room below as the cavity below the roof is in fact internal part of the room below remove the ceiling if you wish its only decorative.

Only if you haven't sealed off this area to the area under the warm roof, you also need to make sure that the thermal properties of what you have used to seal the area with match one of the two elements. The flat roof or the wall if its weaker then you may get some cold bridging.

+Steve Roofer Thank for the reply Steve , would you get condensation forming below the flat roof ?? . Would it be better to seal the vents ??
@SteveRoofer
@SteveRoofer 8 жыл бұрын
If the vents are not venting the roof and only venting the soffit boards keep or remove up to you it will make no difference. If the vents are venting the flat roof condensation to the underside of the warm roof could happen if all conditions were in place, however its unlikely as the underside of the warm roof is warm so moist air will not condense onto it. Where the cold external air is getting in will be colder and you will get condensation around that area. Also you have completely lost the benefit of your warm roof, think of it like this. When you get in bed and you put your quilt over you, you wanted it to keep you warm so you tuck it in around the sides if you don't it doesn't matter how good the quilt is you will always be cold. So basically your warm roof is doing nothing just sitting floating on top of your joists. You must make sure that it is airtight and interrelated all of the way down to the next thermal element.

Comments are off for this construction guide, I guess because they know it's wrong. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/irR6q7iglbi1ln0.html I think it has these issues: 1. Vapour barrier is low quality bin liner material. 2. Vapour barrier is wrapped around insulation on top instead of being adhered to the walls, leaving gaps around perimeter for vapour to rise. 3. Insulation blocks are pointlessly taped on top. 4. No foam is used to join insulation blocks into one continuous sheet. 5. Plywood is used. That's over-specced for this application compared to cheaper OSB. 6. Bridging from joists all the way up to the top deck with metal screws instead of using plastic fixings which bury the screw head half way down inside the insulation. (Also the very long screws could easily miss the joists when driven without any jig/tool guide like this) Am I wrong or did I miss anything?
