Күн бұрын

In this video, #CarlMooreMusic explores the #WA47 and the #WA251 from Warm Audio in response to a male vocalist. This is not a full review of both #condensermicrophones but a practical example of each mic in action. No post production processing has been added to each mic, but output gain reduction was added to attempt level matching.

Wow, man. First off, props on that being an original song if I read that right. It’s really good and your voice is legit and compliments it well. Also, really high video and sound production. Was really surprised with it. Regarding the mics, I was feeling the WA47 most before the band came in, but as soon as it did the WA251 just popped out of the mix more and felt more vibrant. Great music and demo. +subscribed

Yoo!!! Thanks for the kind words, sub and checking out this video. This is one of my original tunes. I actually wrote it when I was like 15 or 16 haha. But I’ve re-arranged it a couple times. The mics: that’s a legit observation! I’m a proponent of making decisions based on mic characters. I would totally use the WA251 for the record or in this application. That top end presence helps the lead Vox poke out naturally. But I’d use the WA47 if it were just me and a keyboard performing the same song. Thanks for commenting! Seriously!!!

@@CarlMooreMusic Thanks for the generous reply. I have a home studio and record covers of favorite songs just as a hobby I started a couple years ago (primarily guitar, vocals nowhere near yours but that doesnt stop me lol). Ive learned a ton on the production and mixing side and it really helps me to recognize and appreciate what goes into it. Really is a killer song man and slick, jazzy groove with the.bass and drums. One small thought that crossed my mind, was maybe adding baby to the song title like you sing it - "Baby, You Should Let Me." Just a humble 2 cents. Thnx again for the reply.

Thank you for posting unprocessed vocals. Your voice sounded practiced and professional with both mics. I think the 47 sounded muddy and boomy compared to the 251. The 251 sounded slightly bright but much more etched. This was especially obvious with the instruments in the second comparison. The 251 gave your voice a clear stage presence. Where the 47 sounded richer but also you faded into the background. Again both sounded good but I think I liked the 251 better. I suspect musicians will like the sound of the 47 better but I'm an audiophile and listening for different things than a musician does. I place a high value on a etched, clean and accurate sound. I've listened to AB comparisons between the U47 and the WA47 and they sound different when side by side. If you can afford a U47 it's totally worth it. But if you don't have the cash I think the WA is a very good value at 10% of the cost.

Really great video and voice, Agree with your comments about using the mic in different applications, so recoding for the song with the 251 and the 47 for an acoustic session. The warmness of the 47 is so nice but I new straight away that the 251 would cut through better naturally as that's the characteristic of the 251 and similar mics. overall great video man, I'm trying to decide to get a WA-251 or GA-251 MKII which recently got released by Golden Age. Would be great to hear a shootout of those mics if you can persuade them to give you a loan. Not many mic shootouts with your flavour of vocals if I'm honest. Thumbs up and a sub from me!

Yoo!!! I totally appreciate the sub, you checking out the video and your comments! You’re right and I’m with you about application of the mics and their characteristics. I’ve seen quite a few folks bashing warm audio but I like the stuff I own from them. The WA47 is girthy to me and at the time I purchased it, I didn’t have a mic similar to that tonal character. I’m a MAJOR fan of 251’s! I think warm did a stellar job on theirs but I would LOVE to own one of Golden Age’s. Haha. I’d rather just buy it to own it instead of borrowing 😂. But for the exact reason you mentioned, I started putting together short review clips of mics. I kind of got tired hearing the same style of sources to give me an idea of a mic. Both are fine. The extra highs on the 251 will probably have the advantage of cutting through in a song. Or maybe in an up beat dance song. The 47 will probably fit more in mellow songs. The 47 is more beautiful sounding by a small margin but they’re both great.

Thanks for commenting! I’ve got another video on KZfaq in a studio where the primary mic was Neumann u47 (not sure the year). But after the session was over, I had to comp in a section of the 2nd verse because I forgot to add a portion of the BGVs. I was surprised at how close the Warm take on a u47 was to a vintage version. For some, they’ll throw the WA47 in the trash, but to my experience, I could definitely tell Warm got their mic in the u47 family. Again, I appreciate your time for the interaction!

What would you say is better for a more mid/higher type vocal for rap? I had purchased the AKG xlii as my first mic and I believe l has I had a similar experience as you had mentioned in a comment of it being too bright and in my case highlighting the lack of body. Ended up trying an sm7b for half the price definitely can get more body especially with the proximity affect, but I have trouble with getting it to sound clear in the upper frequencies I know its a dynamic. Would one of these be a better option? Also gotta say your comparisons are some of the best I've seen and your layout makes it really easy to follow along with and thanks for reviewing some of these affordable options I hear the GA models sound great too, but definitely a bump in price.

Thanks for checking out the video and commenting! Have you considered u87 style mics? There’s voicing of that mic all over the market and it’s solid either way you use it. I just used an SM7b with the low cut and top boost on a source and it was solid for what I needed! (Female source but it worked nonetheless). I definitely prefer the XLS over the XLII from AKG on vocals so I feel like that could be a solid option too. What’s your front end like? Any external pres and processing? I’m waiting to get my hands on same of the GA models. My videos come from my personal locker lol so I have to shell out the money for them.

@@CarlMooreMusic first of all appreciate you taking the time to read I had not realized I left such a lengthy comment. I have always avoided the u87 after researching and seeing a lot of people say its not as great as it seems (definitely the new ones) however I would be interested if I can get my hands on something vintage. I actually ended up getting the AKG because the price and people saying its real close to that sound. I know there’s so many clones these days and just trying to get the best bang for the buck. Honestly excited to hear you’ll be reviewing the GA models. There aren’t too many reviews on those yet I hear positive things. Did some more research and came across another One called AA (Advanced Audio) they apparently have an excellent budget friendly clone of the famous Sony 800g called the CM800T might be worth looking into they have some other clones as well. And currently Im using the UAD Apollo preamps only the stock clean pre and they offer the 610B (unison) included not sure how it compares to the Neve or Avalon 737 I can demo those to find out you think it will make a distinct difference? Some other mic styles Im intrigued by are the u47, u67, and 251. My rap style is more in the traditional sense then the modern pop sound. My voice isnt naturally bassy but Ive learned to project and bring that out when recording and was looking to emphasize that while still sounding clear. Hence the Sm7b but personally have trouble getting it to the sound the way I like with eq idk if Im expecting too much from it though I know its a great mic at that price.

The main thing 251 is placed upright and the other one is straight so if any condenser mic is placed in upright position it will sound more treble keep both side by side or both upright position

I’ve never personally experienced a more pronounced top end with a mic being placed upside down. Historically, I believe, tube mics were placed upside down to keep the heat away from the capsule. But I don’t think with modern tube builds, that’s as much of an issue. However, I’ve never had the problem you mentioned. If your suggestion works for you, hopefully that’s a plus.

Definitely appreciate the kind words. I think it depends on the source material but I’d say the 251 for a dense track where you need it to cut through the mix. The wa47 could work on maybe a striped down track with not a lot going on.

Honestly, I think it's pretty solid with more affordable gear and more expensive options. I'll post a full video demonstrating that but I've use both mics with plenty of outboard gear in the track & mixing phase. Thanks for the comment, checking out the video and stopping by the channel.

WA251 sounds little bit better, but they absolutely super far away from the originals. That cheap highs sound terrible. But your singing is pretty good though. And overall review is five stars. Thank you for very good job. Much better than all previous reviews i watched.

Thanks for checking out the video, the kind words, and sharing your perspective. I don’t expect these mics to be 1 to 1 clones of the vintage or reissue originals, just as much as I know that only matched pairs sound exactly the same. I do believe it’s in the family of the tones and, for me, that’s sufficient. No consumer will ever listen to a professionally completed song with the knowledge or announcement during the song that “this vocal, or this instrument was recorded with a vintage original, reissue, or a clone 251.” They’ll just be listening to the song. With that being said, I do ascribe to the idea of achieving the best sound possible on the front end. I would like a little more smoothness on the top end of the WA251, and it honestly could use more of a 3D feeling in the mids (TO ME). But also in consideration is that I’d never track without some type of EQ and compression and that can help improve the tone in certain areas. I’ve seen suggestions for tonal improvements (swapping out the tubes for something NOS, or having the mics modded completely). I’ve actually recently replaced the tube in my WA47 and I can hear a more desirable difference in my opinion. Overall, the budget of the majority of home-project studios will never reach the justifiable price tag of telefunken reissue u47 or 251 let alone a solid working vintage with reliable, regular maintenance. There are other clones on the market that may be better than Warm Audio (and I intend to explore that lol) but ultimately, I think Warm gets its customers in the ball park for reasonable rates. That does come with a level of sacrifice but all things do. I’m happy with the results of my work using those tools. Again, much appreciation for taking the time to watch the video and commenting.

Thanks for checking out the video and commenting. I have other tests that are “raw” but that’s not my preference. My style of pitch correction doesn’t alter the tonal characteristics of the mic and I can guarantee what some assume are corrected notes probably aren’t. I understand some subjective positions are not in favor of pitch correcting. I respect the right to the position but don’t agree with it. Again, thanks for checking out the video

Technically, it would be more precise to say the 251 is rolling off the lows and boosting the highs, while 47 is more flat. But I agree that for his voice on this song the 251 sounds better... fantastic really. I usually prefer a frequency response closer to the 47 but I'm really tempted to get the 251 after hearing this, especially for tracks where the lows are being cut anyway.

@CarlMooreMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video. Subjectivity grants you the right to your opinion but I definitely disagree with your perspective here. The point is to display the mic’s natural qualities. EQ preferences vary across listeners. What you may perceive as good is highly likely to sound bad to another. Even your comment that, “ But now one of them just brighter and sounds better,” displays your preference. EQ processing wouldn’t change the validity of this test at all. But again thank you for checking out the video and commenting
