Thank you SO MUCH for this. I've been using it for the past couple of days instead of my normal stretches and it really, really works. I no longer feel like my hands are slow or asleep for the first hour or more of my playing each day. I'm showing this to all of of my upper string friends.

GREAT, Reuben. Glad you shared with friends. Yes....I neglect my own body at times...but it's SO EASY to do these little warmups....in fact....I'm going to do them on my way to play "Nutcracker" in a few minutes! Keep up the good work.

Oh YES, a violin can greatly inhibit a beginner's progress. Whenever a student has a limited budget, we try out really cheap violins. So my #1 priority with these cheap instruments is "will it hold the student back?". Obviously, a really cheap vioin won't sound as good as a more expensive one....but not all cheap violins are so bad that they would hold you back. I'm sure your Gliga is wonderful! Have fun with your new toy! -L

I thinks it's important to stress the importance of moving slowly when doing warmups and stretches. It is also better to hold a stretch longer than pushing or pulling harder. Very nice stretches/warmups, I find washing the dishes to be a superb warmup.

As a professional violinist myself, I've always done some form of stretches prior to playing but these little tips are fantastic especially when done in the proper sequence! Thank you so much!

They have been life-savers for me! Just the other day, I was headed for a gig, and had no time to warm up, so I started doing the little forearm rotations and finger circles while driving! (whatever it takes, right?)

I love this! I'm healing from frozen shoulder surgery and have neck issues. Right now I'm just doing these exercise in preparation for getting back to playing. Also, adjusting my chin rests and shoulder rests.

Hi Dana! How nice to hear from you! Wow....frozen shoulder is SUCH a horrible condition. I am glad to know you got the surgery and you are healing from it. I was "diagnosed" with frozen shoulder a couple years ago.....but not sure if it was a legit diagnosis.....I was considering surgery. But I went to a really good massage therapist, and she seems to have helped....it has cleared up 100%. I sure hope the surgery will do the trick for you. Make SURE that you figure out some good exercises to do for rehab. If I were you, I would search KZfaq and figure it out yourself. (I have horrible luck with my local physical therapy practitioners....they never help me at all...but the exercises you can learn on youtube are awesome). Let me know if you need help figuring out a good shoulder rest/chin rest combo. Here's to health and healing!

3) Mach One: these are expensive, and are very similar to the Kun. But if you have a local shop, try one out. 4) Once you find the right shoulder rest, then experiment with chin rests. I use a Stuber, and my jaw is very minimal and not square. GOOD LUCK!

What type of shoulder rest do you have, and what is your body type? Tall, short, long arms, short arms, long neck, short neck, square shoulder, narrow/sloping shoulders, prominent collar bone, square jaw....? I can make a suggestion or two, to help you narrow it down.

I loved this! Normally, I think I'm pretty loose, but after a day of hard farm work, if I'm going to get on the fiddle, this is very nice. I can really feel it deep inside, and it makes a great difference when playing. As always, thanks!

Thanks for the "shoulder rolls" term! Good to know! Many of my students start out with discomfort, but to my knowlege, they have all resolved their pain by finding the right set-up. One student quit due to his pain, but he only gave it 2 months...and sometimes it takes longer than that! YES, make 2013 your year!!! My goodness, what is stopping you??? Come visit my site. My online students are making SHOCKING progress! Even I am surprised at how well they are doing!

Hey! YOu are built very similarly to me! I'm short, with sloping, narrow shoulders. Let me tell you what rests I want you to try out. Hopefully, you have a shop in your area, but if you don't, it is WORTH IT to buy these rests and try them out. Most shops allow you to return them if they are in mint condition. 1) Kun (watch my video on how to set it up right) 2) Wolf Secundo (this requires BENDING, so you won't be able to return it) google "magic posture shoulder rest" and learn how to adjust.

Hi Lora, I am an adult Learner. I have 2 cheaper Student Violins, and have been striving a lot without much results. Finally, I decided that it was due to the Violins quality ! I just bought a Gliga Gems 1 from Alexi Strings, NY, USA. It is definitely of a far superior quality t It was magical ! On my new Gliga, within a week now, I am playing with ease and things are much, easier. So, the violin quality is an important factor that may retain a Learner from progressing. Am I right ?

Hopefully, the warm-ups will help your neck pain.....but also, pay attention to your chin rest and shoulder rest. Those can play a BIG part in neck pain, or in eliminating pain. Don't settle for pain....you CAN find a perfectly comfortable set up!

Great info for warming up. I do some of these already as a way of trying to unknot my left trapezius. BTW, in the physical therapy world your "shruggy circles" are called "shoulder rolls" (forward/backward). I wonder if starting violin lessons would compound my problem. You make holding a violin (under the jaw w/hand support) look so easy. Do any of your students complain of neck problems from practicing/playing? I'm an adult who has wanted to play the violin for 20 years. Could 2013 be the yr?

Thanks! I don't have a tube on the E and the bow is quite new, but I tried to do what I imagine a firm attack might be, and that helped. I think it also helped to drop my left finger more lightly, and bow nearer the bridge,. Surprisingly tricky! I'll ask my teacher about "attacking" next lesson.

Hi Boulos, I am SO SORRY about your trigger finger. My mom had it.....and it is extremely painful.....we got surgery for her. If I were you, I would search youtube for trigger finger treatments.....and see if there is a natural way to release it. I bet massage and acupressure would help......I wish you lots of luck and a total solution for you. Sorry I'm not able to advise.

On the 1st twinkle exercise I can't do the "twiddle" on E upbow! It makes the string stop sounding for a few inches of the bow stroke. What on Earth? I've tried lighter and heavier pressure but it still cuts out and just makes a faint squeek. Lower strings don't seem to do it. ?????
@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Colette--that E problem is very common, and has MANY contributing factors. The biggest culprit is the "E Sleeve" that plastic tube that goes under the e string to protect the bridge? Make sure it is scooted BACK as far as possible toward the tailpiece, but still on the bridge. If it hangs over too far across the bridge, it will give your E string fits. Also, check for rosin crust on the string. Make sure your bow is straight, and on a good sounding point. Make sure you attack the E string firmly. If the problem persists, you might need an adjustment.
