As a Finn, I think that in a conflict Finland and Sweden would make a very powerful duo. Sweden would guard our skies and our coasts while Finlands enourmous ground forces would fight on land alongside the swedish elite troops. We have to remember that Finland is the country who has a border with Russia but we would still defend each other. Stay strong Swedish brothers 🇫🇮💪🇸🇪

I see Finland and Sweden as a package deal without compromises. Our militaries are too intertwined to be separated and Finland has been a bufferzone to east for Sweden every since Cold war. We're too close countries both politically and culturally that separation of any sorts in modern times would be unthinkable as a Finn.

@@MoldyNachos89 That has been the main topic around the joining ever since it became relevant. That taken into consideration Before the war in Finland that number was like 25% or so in favor of Nato, before applying it was somewhere around 80%, so it was thought through a lot. The fact is that if Putin were to attack North he should have done it before Ukraine. As God-Emperor Niinistö said; Putin can only blame himself for us joining. Now the whole arctic (excluding Russia) is Nato area, so that alone leaves only non-Nato seaports for open sea to far east. Russia has pressures North for over a century and even after starting the war he tried to threaten us like he has done as long as I remember. This time we called the bluff and Putin played himself into checkmate in the first turn. But this is just my biased view into it, very Nordic view and very surface level view 'cause I don't want to write an novel to you to read in KZfaq haha 😎

I would say the biggest reason for Sweden joining NATO is not actual threat of invasion for Sweden or it's capability to defend itself, but for Finland. The countries always said they would join together if they ever were to join, and once Finland wanted to join, Sweden was never going to say no. Vice versa as well.

As a swede I would argue that our most important contribution to NATO would be weapons. We are already providing a lot of high tech weapons to the alliance, more than you think. I'll give you a list here. Many of these weapons have killed tens of thousands of russians in this war. We can start with the M982 Excalibur artillery shell which is a joint collaboration between Sweden and the USA. The shell is manufactured here in Sweden in a city called Karlskoga. This is what wikipedia says: The munition was co-developed by United States-based Raytheon Missiles & Defense (guidance system) and the Swedish BAE Systems Bofors (body, base, ballistics, and payload). This shell along with the USA made HIMARS system has been blowing up hundreds of ammuntion depots and places where the russians have stored large amounts of weapons. It has also taken out a lot of russian artillery, tanks, troops, anti-air systems, special electronic warfare systems, etc. Basically all NATO countries have this artillery shell. Also the highly advanced Bonus (joint collaboration with France) artillery shell is manufactured here in Sweden by Bofors and used by a lot of western powers. Then you have the NLAW (joint collaboration with the UK) anti tank weapon which proved to be a big success in the battle for Kyiv. The ukranians took out many tanks with it during that battle. A couple of countries have this weapon and I guess even more will buy it in the future because of it's success. Next up is the Carl Gustaf recoilless rifle, like every NATO country got this one. After that, the AT-4, another weapon which most of the countries in NATO have. Then we have RBS-15 (joint collaboration with Germany for the latest version, Mark 4) (also called Gungnir, which is the spear of the god Odin, from norse mythology, and which never miss it's target), one of the best anti-ship missiles. It beats the USA made Harpoon anti-ship missile. Some countries got this one as well, the germans and the poles, also the finns and maybe som others. Then we got the RBS-70 NG, anti-air MANPAD. A couple of NATO countries have this one as well. It's reported that it has downed a couple of russian cruise missiles and a bunch of iranian drones. Then you have the CV90 of course, the most used IFV in NATO in terms of the number of countries using it. It's 10 countries that uses it now. We also have the Ghost - tank project. A project that is in it's prototype stage right now, to make a stealth tank basically, on the CV90 plattform, to hide from IR, infrared sensors. A lot of weapons use IR to find and target, if the IR signature can't be detected, then you can't find the target. You could also say that it's going to be a night ambush tank. Because during the night you won't be able to detect it visually either. Then you have the BVS10, Bandvagn 206, Warthog, the Viking, or whatever they call it. A lot of NATO countries have this terrain vehicle. CB90 (combat boat 90) used by a couple of countries. This little boat can fire hellfire missiles, our RBS-17 short range anti-ship missile. The Bofors 40mm, I think 90 countries around the world got this one! One of the most legandary swedish weapons through history. Then we have mines, mine clearing equipment, hand grenades, all sorts of explosives. After all, we were the country that invented dynamite. Maybe you have heard of Alfred Nobel, the Nobel price.. ;) Then you have JAS 39 Gripen, used by a couple of countries. Then we have the meteor anti-air missile, the worlds most advanced anti-air missile. This was a collaboration with many countries. We were the first ones to use it on our jet fighter, the Gripen. We did most of the testing and some development. After that we have some awesome weapons that no one uses except us. Like the Archer artillery system (Well, the UK bought 14 of these recently), our submarine HMS Gotland, our Visby stealth corvette, our mobile mid range anti-air system called BAMSE 23, Mjölnir (which is the hammer of Thor from norse mytholodgy) our 120mm mortar vehicle, which can carry more than one hundred 120mm mortars, it's based on the CV90, etc. And in a couple of years time we will get our new A26 stealth submarine which is crazy advanced. It will be able to launch drones! You just hide the submarine on the bottom of the ocean and then launch multiple drones from it to attack the russian fleet.. ;) .. I think we will get that one in 2027-2028. So, for the russians to do a large scale land invasion by sea and put hundreds of thousands of troops on our shores might be a big problem for them. It is already hard for them today, but in the future it will be even harder.. :D Our radar family of vehicles called Giraffe. You know after the african animal with the long neck.. ;) .. Many countries have this radar system as well. We sent a couple to Ukraine. Ahh, I forgot the GLSDB (Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb), joint collaboration with the USA. This system is like our HIMARS system basically. It has a 150 km range. I think the ukranians may have got this from the USA. So yeah, this would be our contribution to NATO, to be able to provide more weapons. We already sell a lot today, but we have pretty hard export laws regarding weapons. If we joined NATO, then maybe we could sell some weapons that we are not allowed to sell today. Like our submarines, corvettes, etc. And maybe it would be easier to export more weapons. So basically we already are NATO's small weapons factory today. But yeah, I think this would be a big win both for Sweden and for NATO if we joined the alliance. That was a long rant! .. ;) .. Cheers from Sweden!

@@RabbitShirak That sounds reasonable. Sweden itself has never been invaded(unless you count the time we were under danish rule in a personal union) because the geography is helping us immensely. The only way Russia can attack us without going through Finland or Norway would be across the Baltic where we would lie in wait with submarines and a huge amount of patrol boats that would be covered by gripens, not to mention being protected naturally by all our islands. Those gripens being able to take off from any road and be refueled and rearmed in 10 minutes. Russia would lose heavy casualties in just trying to get ashore and while they're trying that reinforcements will have arrived. And even if Russia would make it to the mainland we have just as rough terrain as Finland but more of a guerilla warfare tactics. They would lose fast either way

Finland is a strategic asshole that we all know and love. During world war 2 Germany invaded Denmark and Norway, but never Sweden or Finland, the reason being that these two countries have the easiest routes into Russia. Whilst all the other countries fought in the heart of Europe, Finland was able to repel the Russians mostly due to how ingenious they are at warfare and that Sweden depleted their entire stocks of iron, ammunition, weapons, and vehicles to support them.

After WWII Sweden suggested a Scandinavian alliance. When Norway and Denmark choose to join NATO and Finland decided not to we opted to stay out. We stayed out of NATO because we didn´t want to leave Finland out to dry. When Finland decided to join NATO we followed suit. On a geopolitical and military level Sweden and Finland are interconnected today just like we were for 600 years when we were the same country. The program was eventually scrapped, but the capacity was there for quite some time after. Sweden did shy away from someone elses nuclear umbrella though. 2. Swedish re-armament began earlier than 2022 and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Conscription was re-instated 2017, so it was only a 7 year hiatus. Though the volumes that are called up for conscription today is way lower than during the cold war, it has been increasing every year since 2017 and prison scentences are again handed out to people that dodge it. The same goes for the re-militarization of Gotland, that has been going on for quite a few years prior to 2022. We've also got stealth tanks (doesn't emitt a heat signature, so invisable at night), in addition to stealth subs and corvettes. Though only on the prototype stage at this point, If my understanding of the system is correct.

@@geopolitiikkajasota4404 Yeah, the numbers are still too low, about 1/5th of the numbers just after the fall of the SU. But it has increased at a steady phase and keeps on increasing. The goal for 2025 is 10 000/year (for comparison, in 1995, 35 000 men were called up). I don't think we'll see numbers all that much highter than that this decade tbh, but mostly because I seriously doubt that anyone still thinks it's a good idea to defend Bodens fästning with mass bodies against Russia like they thought in the 60s. And the reserve numbers are higher in reality a bit higher than stated, conscription was only abolished for 7 years and yearly training for earlier conscripts have been ongoing for 7 years at this point. @@pmsavenger The KTH-reactor was the first reactor in Sweden, I think it's main purpose was testing for civilian nuclear power. Probably not only, though. Most of the work on the weapons program, or at least a lot of it was done at FOI in Sundbyberg as well as in Ågesta outside Farsta were the first commercial nuclear reactor in Sweden was built. It was intended to (in secret) be a dual purpose plant, producing power as well as being a source for plutonium to the weapons program. The weapons program was dismantled by 1972 after a decission in 68 (I think, might have been 1966). We also, unofficially, asked the US if we could buy 25 of their nukes. I also recall reading something about faking a nuclear test by setting off insane amount of regular explosives in some remote area of Norrland, y'know, to scare the Russians a bit. That doesn't mean we aren't close. My wife and friends have family in Finland. If attacked I would grab my bags and offer to kill and die for Finnish independence and it's people. Under article 5 we are obliged to do it as a nation and no selfish or cowardly politician can stop it. Such a nonsense i must say, using weapons that a handful of them could be produced or there are far better alternatives in NATO already to prove ''Sweden is strong''!! But unlike this nonsense the real answer is very simple: Can Sweden protect itself against Russia? No.. Can US protect itself? Yes.. Can France protect itself? Yes.. Can Turkey protect itself? Yes.. Can UK, Italy or Spain protect itself? Maybe.. Yep, all other nations in NATO are already relying on NATO for protection and Sweden would be just an excess baggage! US wants Sweden to join so they can place their missiles to there. EU wants Sweden to join so first time in history pretty much entire Europe would be united militarily. But why Turkey would care any of those especially while Sweden still doesn't want to drop it's non-aligned policies and show very little intention to protect it's future NATO allies!! Even if Finland is in similar situation both their army isn't as bad as Sweden and they also dropped their non-aligned policies entirely and really committed to protect all NATO members. Unless Sweden does the same im not supporting their membership, they can sign a defensive pact with US alone if they want protection alone not becoming allies...

A funny thing about the "I thought SAAB only made cars?" is that Automobile manufacture was actually an afterthought and later sideproject. Originally it was an aircraft only company, the name standing for "Svenska Aeroplan AB" or "Swedish Aeroplanes & Co". AB is an abbreviation of Aktiebolag, meaning a joint stock company. It's common to see Swedish company names either incorporating or tacking it on. After the company expanded into the automobile industry it would also begin to divide itself, the car manufacturing part becoming SAAB Automobile AB that would then be bought by GM before going belly up last decade. Gripen or "The Griffin" is not just the most wellknown of their planes, but also named after their logo of a heraldic looking griffin with a crown on its head.

What our defence companies did was to do joint collaborations with other countries. So, the USA, UK, France, Germany and others funded our defence companies and bought many weapons from us, when the swedish goverment wouldn't do so. They simple did so because they thought we made great weapons. Now it's a different ball game. Since the invasion of Ukraine we have greatly increased our defence budget again! That is just partly true, SAAB started before jet planes in 1938 with prop planes. The cars were more of a side-hussle that eventually became it's own separate entity. "Marketing" is another word for "lying" and when those adds run, the cars had nothing to do with aircrafts anymore. The car company launched it's first car in 1948, basically since they had more factories then needed after the war so why not build something else there instead of just closing them? There is a third company, SAAB Scania, that makes trucks too. It is also a different entity, and makes a whole lot of money. The car company is kinda on ice at the moment but there are rumors they will make an EV soon.

True, true, but still not quite true. SAAB was created by Bofors in 1937 and began building propeller-driven aircraft 1939. At the start of WWI, Tsar Nicholas II decided to back Serbia against Austria-Hungary, with the shallow pretence of "protecting fellow slavs" even when a good number of the Russian people were against him and indirectly causing WWI by signalling the mobilisation of the Triple Entente as they were going against Austria-Hungary.

It is strange to hear foreigners say over and over again that Finland was neutral. I have been born in Finland, lived here my whole life, been through the schools here and been through the army but despite all that I have never heard that we were neutral. We were militarily non allied but definitely not neutral as far as I know. It sounds to me like people would be calling us southern europeans all of a sudden. I could write about this more but I think it would be waste of time. For those interested, I'll be going to birthday party of one of my relatives in couple of days who had to evacuate from southern Karjala during the wars and whose home is on the russian side of border these days. I got a lot of family from there and even more who are dead by now. Not a single word of neutrality from them either.
@kepanoid
@kepanoid Жыл бұрын
Neutrality and non-alignment were, and are, fluid concepts. Basically, it means "we won't take sides in a conflict which doesn't involve us". And as in Switzerland's case in WW I, "we will ally us with the ones that *didn't* attack us first". They didn't have to (the second one was even more complex for them). That can sometimes, and for a time, keep the bear out. But we Finns definitely have been aware of the fact that any major conflict would involve us. In our military training, the enemy has always come from the east. Now that we are in the NATO, it has a definite name that can be spoken out loud.

@@kepanoid Seems like I need to write about this more then. Finland had YYA sopimus that wikipedia treanslates to Agreement of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance signed with Sovie Union in 1948. I recommend reading about that as it becomes clear that Finland was not neutral. Also if my memory serves me right, we joined EU in 1995 and EU has similar language in it and EU also got the section about assistance in case a member is being attacked. One could say that Finland was neutral after the fall of Soviet Union till joining the EU but I would argue that it was just transitional period. Finland was doing what it took to stay independent and that takes more than just military power unless you are one of the biggest nations on the planet and even they will use other forms of power in foreign relations. Being militarily non allied is a lot better way to describe the reality than neutrality. It is likely another case of disregard towards accuracy and laziness like as an example calling Finland Scandinavian. Not caring about something or making something easier doesn't make that right.

The difference may seem inconsequential but we have many times picked sides in conflicts, we helped Finland in the winter war for example, we've also been involved in the wars in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Libya etc. We also also did create nuclear weapons, we have huge deposits of both Uranium and Plutonium and there's a lake up in northern Sweden created from our first successful nuclear bomb. The formula for Swedish neutrality has actually been "Non-alliance in peacetime, neutrality in wartime", i.e. Sweden would stay our of formal alliances, and declare neutrality at such times that it concluded that peace was no longer the state of affairs around it but rather war had broken out. It did stick to this formula since 1815, but made one exception - in 1939 when Sweden decided to not declare itself neutral in the Winter War between the USSR and Finland, Sweden instead opting for supporting Finland financially and otherwise. So the Swedish decision to aid Ukraine in 2022 was unprecedented except for the 1939 aid to Finland.

Skilled politicians of all pursuasions managed to maneuver through those debate gauntlets among other by pointing to the need for Sweden as a neutral country to maintain that successful, strong, advanced and independent defence industry. Swedens neutrality hence provided a powerful impetus for a successful defence industry in spite of ”weapons” often times being a dirty word in the public debate.

I don't find it surprising at all. Your people have always been remarkable for both their determination and engineering aptitude, doubtless the same Viking traits that allowed them to build reliable seafaring longships and cross the Atlantic centuries before Columbus. Your nation already had one bloody war with Russia, albeit a very long time ago, and you have seen how your neighbours suffered in both world wars. Very similar to my own philosophy, which is to never instigate war, but never be completely unprepared for it either. We ALL want peace, but thankfully your doves at home, still being Viking in their dna if not hearts, realised the rest of the world is a far more sinister place than Stockholm/Goteborg/Malmo etc, and that just because they didn't want Swede weaponry being used overseas, that's no reason to leave the motherland undefended.

This video and most press and media fail to mention one key ability that Sweden would bring to Nato and which Nato is actually lacking in many areas. And that is diplomacy. During Sweden's decades, even centuries, of Neutrality it has managed to build up a diplomatic corps, whose experience and contacts rival that of both the US State department and UK Foreign Office. Sweden has a network of diplomatic contacts to countries, regimes and groups whom are antagonistic or out right hostile to Nato and most of its member countries. This means the Sweden has often acted as liaison and proxy for many western countries and Nato members. One example is that it is one of few countries with a working embassy in North Korea and has been vital for the US when it have come to negotiations with the regime in Pyongyang. Likewise it has many backdoor connections to different rebel groups and freedom movements around the world that Nato have lacked. In fact, Turkey's complaint and reluctance to allow Sweden to join Nato isn't because Sweden have supported Kurdish guerillas or terrorists but because it has for decades maintained diplomatic backdoor contacts with those factions. Something Turkey obviously is eager to prevent as it is in Ankara's interests to isolate their enemies and prevent them from having clear lines of communication to the rest of the world. However, such backdoor diplomacy contacts to entities to whom Nato would otherwise lack any means of communication or ways to receive vital intelligence about or even from, is a strength and ability that makes Sweden much more useful to Nato than any guns, ships or planes it would bring to the alliance.
