The Army Painter Warpaints Fanatic Complete Set, while good, is not a good way to spend that hobby dollar, and this set is not for most hobbyists. It can be an expensive hobby if you are throwing your money around at products. We take a quick dive in other ways to spend that money and discuss why I think it is Limited Edition.

I'm in Canada and I got it for $700 CAD. My box came in on Sunday Feb 18th 2024. Been using it just for two days. I agree with you that most people don't need it. But personally, I bought it because I absolutely hate mixing colours. I've been painting on and off since 2nd edition 40k in 1994 and I've concluded my brain is just terrible at imagining colours. I only know the colour I want something to be when I see it - and even then I've always struggled with knowing what to highlight with and etc. I'm also awful at imagining how a room looks painted, or how it would look with a different floor, or whatever else. I have a cousin on the other hand who went to art school and he basically just needs 16 colours and a wet palette and can effectively just make any colour he wants on demand perfectly somehow. I'm envious of his ability. As a result of this I was always running to the hobby store to buy some bottles cause I'd be doing something and I always felt like there was some colours I was missing. My local stores are far away and have terrible hours - I figured with this I would finally just have effectively everything I would ever need for traditional layer painting. Ironically I found the new warpaints range has a gaping hole in dark red browns lol. Besides that it's been nice. Some of the ivory/bone colours need better and/or smoother pigmentation IMO - though poor covering and chalky whites is not some new problem with acrylic paints. Finally, for me, I'm paid quite highly so the price is justifiable for me. My work is demanding and stressful as a result, so when it's time to hobby I want to just be 100% in the zone and have everything I'm going to need.

Hey Weaver_Games, this is the sort of purchase insight I am glad to hear about, particularly with your years of experience and challenges. Whether you have aphantasia or the internal visualization/colour aspect hasn't developed to the level of others, like your cousin, having a straightforward guide system (above and beyond the 3-triad) makes sense. Coupled with a lack of easy access to product when you need, I can see where this serves as a "one-and-done" paint purchase. Refill as you empty pots and happy painting ! As you have spotted a lack of red brown I reckon you already have that in your collection? Do you expect, with your circumstance, to have challenges in stepping outside the range (integrating other lines) for this or other lacks it has? I agree with the chalky whites, it is a burden we all must bear (now I wonder if anyone uses zinc as their white pigment). Glad the treasury has room to spare for you, this hobby plays a big part in a lot of people's mental health whether they recognize it or not and I am glad you see its value for you. I also have a high stress job and this hobby is a lifesaver. Love to hear what you and other users have to say at 6-month and 1-year marks, if any other pros or cons get discovered by end users. Stay frosty!

@@TheUnderpainter Yeah the red-browns I got covered with some pro acryl that I had. Specifically the colour "burnt red" though I want to pick up a "burnt sienna". that should basically do me. I also have some vallejo stuff as well but nothing covering that particular colour gap. I guess to elaborate on my situation - as I said I've been "on and off" since 94. I got back into it again recently and discovered I had a large collection of old and now basically dried up and useless citadel paints. Back from when they were doing those twist screw tops. I saw all the hotness with contrast and speed paints so I bought into a lot of those to paint the original copy of a now out of print boardgame called Descent which has just a ridiculous amount of minis (they weren't super great, but something to paint). So I kind of just slap chopped my way through it over a year or so. I picked up a few normal acrylics along the way for various things like highlighting the more centerpiece models. I then dug into a ton of old 40k I had laying around but since all my citadel paints were toast I had a dire need for new paints. I picked up stuff here and there as I went but AP announced this new fanatic line so I've effectively just been running with my minimal normal acrylic collection waiting for this release to replace my dead paints. Slapchop is fun and fast, but I think just being an oldschool guy I prefer doing more traditional painting and layering up think acrylics. It takes 10x as long but I feel like I have more control over the workflow and enjoy it more. I do have also some AP and vallejo airbrush paints I've been using to gap fill as well. Not really designed for the brush but they usually work fine. Anyways, if I already had a sizable collection of modern acrylics there's no way I would have bought the new fanatic line in its entirety. I feel the fanatics are good, but I don't think they're really superior to pro-acryl or the refresh of vallejo game color (I also don't think they're worse, so that's nice). My recommendation to people is if you already have paint you like there is literally no reason to switch to the new AP stuff. Maybe buy some bottles to try it if you're curious but it does not seem like a paint revolution, but it does seem like decent paint you can find in almost every store (at least, based on where I live). The AP marketing push does what marketing does for these things and hypes them up, but these are still just acrylic paints. Despite the "stabilizer" marketing BS there's no new magic in them. It's pigment suspended in a water based medium just like acrylics have been since 1934, we've just stopped using toxic pigments like cobalt and cadmium which is great. Yellows and oranges still cover worse than blues. It's still probably better to thin them out for a few thin coats than gloop on a ridiculously thick coat no one would actually do like in those marketing videos. The best part about AP really is that they're easy to find, at least around here in southern Ontario. I'm also curious how this shakes out over the long term and how the community consensus on them lands after a lot of people have had time with them. Thanks for the reply, wishing you all the best.

While I would probably do the same and buy the complete set, my problem stems from the fact that I live in the philippines and we don't have any suppliers for it not to mention the fact that thr exchange rate ain't exactly cheap. Thankfully we do have our local hobby paint suppliers who are almost on par with foreign brands.

Appreciate your opinions, and encouragement to others to make the right decision for themselves. I pre-ordered the complete set, as someone who started painting just before the pandemic. I started with the old AP starter set, and bought a couple smaller Vallejo sets along the way. Despite having over 60 bottles of paints, the colour distribution is skewed and at times too limiting to work with. I had tried to mix as much colours as possible. But it got to a point where it created too much frustration when i have to mix 3-4 paints to get soemthing i want. So i was on the market to get a comprehensive set of paint, and AP's annoucement came at the right time.
@TheUnderpainter
@TheUnderpainter 4 ай бұрын
This is a good point, I think you should be covered with this set for some time. I personally try to lean towards picking out individual colours based on my "style" and "needs", but it is a process that takes time and experience. And mixing colours can be challenging due to mini-paints being multi pigmented, so it can not go the way one would expect. Best of luck on your journey! 👍

2:12 Oh man no kidding! Nearly $800 for a paint range is rediculus when you can get all of Tamiya's ranges for less then half... And the paint will likely be better too though I have not tried any army painter paints but have tried a few different ones and keep coming back to Tamiya they are just that good.

See I'm in the other boat and haven't given Tamiya a run, a little shop in town started to carry them recently so now you have me actually interested in them. And they are Japanese paints so I mean, come on, you know it's going to be good albeit in a new ecosystem. Us hobbysists often get caught up in our own area/niche and forget there are tons of other overlapping hobbies that we can get ideas, techniques, and tools from. Model train builders have decades of experience that goes untapped by most of us. Enjoy the Tamiya, if you have a system that works well and doesn't break the wallet, stick with it.

Here is a thought. Why not learn how to use just six colours to mix all the paints you might need. I used to use a lot of hobby paint in the past, but discovered artist acrylics about 3 years ago. Since then I find myself using only cyan, magenta, yellow, black, white and raw umber (brown). Six paints. That's it. I use paints from Golden Acrylics and paint on black primed minis. For priming I use Vallejo black polyurethane primer thinned with airbrush thinner and brush it on my minis. Works just fine. In total, the paint, the thinner and primer as well as a size 1 and 2 Raphael 8404 have cost me about 120 Euro.... Painting minis need not be a very expensive hobby.

because it sucks to mix same color next time?
@travelminipainter
@travelminipainter 3 ай бұрын
@@petervansan1054 There is certainly that argument to be made. The point I am making is however this: Having multiple paints is certainly more convenient than mixing. But it is also a lot more expensive. So instead of spending hundreds of whatever your currency is, you could spend a fraction and with a little investment into colour theory and learning to mix will be able to enjoy the hobby of painting minis with far less financial implications. And you don't need to spend more on a specific colour you might only use a couple of times, when you know how to mix it. I get that this is not for everyone, but it *is* viable alternative. Even for army painting. Uniforms in any historical conflict never have the exact same hue... But it is more work to start with. I find however that it becomes more and more second nature, the more I go down that avenue.
@TheUnderpainter
@TheUnderpainter 3 ай бұрын
@@travelminipainter I whole heartedly agree, and I have been expounding this to my friends in the hobby. The time invested in learning real colour theory and not the grade school lies will pay off. Roman Lappat has been doing a video series on YT that roughly covers what he teaches in his classes, so anyone can try their hands at it. It does take time and can be challenging but realistically it is the sort of core knowledge and skills that separates "competitive" painters that win from everyone else. I have no interest in competition painting personally, but for people that do they need to go and do their personal education. The cost savings with artist paints is key as people complain about how the hobby bleeds them financially when it can be death by a thousands cuts on tools/supplies... . but we all have to make our own sound decisions. The counter point is generally that colour mixing sucks/is hard and many people just want to get models painted and on the table. But when that is the case the 200+ paints seem redundant as why would they care? Have 10 paints and cycle through them. But the average hobbyist doesn't come from an art background or may not have a strong interest in delving into the hobby in that way, in which case a nice selection of colours of hobbyist paints serves them well, and we tend to be spoiled for choice these days. Also yes, uniforms never truly matched and I think it looks kinda shite to have everything perfectly matching. Look at current service uniforms, variations are present even for the richest nations. Besides variety creates story and interest for each model and squad. Experiment, have fun, its a hobby.....it's meant to be fun.

My only complaint is that I wish these companies would stop doing these large sets as "pre-order specials." Those of us who see it after the pre-order window who would buy a set end up only finding them for sale by the people who want to profiteer on it by scooping up several and then jacking up prices when someone goes looking for a full set... Other than that my thoughts are positive on what I am seeing....

I think the Mega fanatic set with 50 colours more spaced out makes more sense for the average person, but then I assume the average person does not mind watering paints down a bit ( free paint mentality ) and is fine at least blending shades with one method or another. To be honest, I am not only fine with that, it is exactly the sort of thing I enjoy about the hobby. It is a bit of a shock really when you learn that we are all different and some people hate watering paints and messing about.

Also some pro acryls, two thin coats and various citadel colours like Rakarth flesh that are essential. I've had some quality issues with Pro Acryl and Two thin coats. Numerous colours in pro acryl separate and no matter how much mixing they instantly go back to separation and some of TTC are ultra viscous. Shame really. there's really no need to have a million and one paints. practically everything I've ever painted I've done with a starter set of vallejo model color (16), a starter set of game color (16) and the starter set of speedpaint 2 (10) and a set of AK fleshtones (6) in total that's 48 bottles and you can literally mix every colour that's ever existed (or close enough that nobody is gonna notice). I use airbrush a LOT (H&S evolution CR+) and there's no need to buy "air" paints, just add water or thinner to your normal paint. (that's literally all that "air" paints are anyway) if any run out I buy a single bottle to replace it. mixing a colour really isn't that hard I',m willing to bet that most people don't use much more than that even if they have boxes containing hundreds of bottles
@slickschoppers

I don't know what other people use. but i use way more than your listing,,,, you may be happy with a minimalistic paint set and mixing, but to say there is "no need" to buy air paints.... I mean, yea, there is not "need" to paint or even own minis. that's kinda silly, we have airpaints because we don't want to mix. we want a consistant pre mixed paint ready for airbrushes. so many of us want air paints. I use all sorts of colors, and if you don't have to be a commission painter to paint large groups. My son needed 30 goblins for D&D. super easy to just use pre mixed paints that you don't have to mix. I have the complete lines of WarColours Golden So Flats Army Painter badger Minitaire and a ton of valejo, a few citadel, reaper etc. i''ve pre ordered the complete Fanatic set, and am super excited for it to arrive hopefully some time next month!!!!

@TheUnderpainter 4 ай бұрын
I agree, most people have more paints than they actually "need". With increased art theory (of varying types) and experience with painting the requirement diminishes, however, most of these "beyond core" products exist in a convenience realm. It is convenient to have pre-thinned paints, it is convenient to have high-pigmented transparent products, it is convenient to have 6 fleshtones. And people love these! There is nothing wrong with convenience, it just has to make sense for the individual user, and the cost of that convenience is crucial (largely fractional time vs money). That's why I think outlaying cost by purchasing as a need develops makes the most practical sense (for me). You have the right attitude and approach to keeping things economical and creative (limiting colour selection can be very liberating creatively).
@TheUnderpainter
@TheUnderpainter 4 ай бұрын
See this is the convenience aspect as air paints, grab it and blast through a group! And 30 gobbos is enough to need a fair number of refills. Cost of convenience equals time and effort saved.
